  1. By the way, the black paint on that upper pipe burnt off after 5 miles :-) It's now looking white!

I used a flameproof ceramic paint on the pipes and an engine paint on the fishtail. The paint on the fishtail is burning off after 1 drive. I could have used some NOS elbows. Mine look like they had broken corners welded back on.

Postage would have killed on those.

  2. I have bought items off E-bay from England to the US and have never heard of needing an "export license" for the parts I'm buying. Bought a clansman harness box, and also alot of spare Ferret parts.

I'm looking at getting some Larkspur parts for my C-13 radio in my Ferret. Does the seller need an "export license" to ship to the US because they are considered "Military parts"????

    Thanks-Chris

  3. Thanks for the advice. The problem is getting that "other" person. (the wife) to help turn the engine. Its like pulling teeth to get her to help out. I told her before it would be "fun" turning the engine with the crank. Its like those garden windmills or an organ grinder with a monkey.

That somehow didnt sell the idea to her. ;)

  4. Andy,

Thanks for the tips. I was able to get the rear plate off last night and will attempt to put some hoses on today. A note to others is that the thermostat part is aluminum so be VERY careful getting it off. I didnt know that.

Question: Can the thermostat be removed without the special extractor tool? I have a new thermostat just in cause.

    Thanks-Chris

  5. Ive been to the Ferret site and thats where I read its an... "easy job". I guess I wanted to know is it possible to leave the bottom 2 hoses (the drain plug and bottom rad) alone and replace the one next to the pulley WP without removing the rear hull?

I didnt realize that the pipes on the ferret are so close to each other. I thought it was more like a car where theres a big gap between pipes so you can attach the hoses without pulling everything apart.

If I disconnect the the cylinder block drain valve pipe at the bottom, will that allow enough flex to be able to get a hose on?

    Thanks-Chris

  6. Trying to change the coolant hoses which looked all bad on the outside, but after cutting them off they seemed brand new inside. So I just discovered I have made more work for myself than needed. How do I get the downtube from the Thermostat to the water pump off? I assume I remove that to get the replacement hose on then reattach it?

Is there also a way of attaching the hose from the WP to the rad bottom without taking off the whole back end and rad of the ferret??

I think I should have left everything alone.

  7. Ok. I have the manifolds off and painted and just have to finish painting the exhaust and put it all back on the engine.

I should check the tappet clearance, but have never done it before, so I'm thinking about giving up on it.

I know they should be checked cold and have a .015 gap. I have the timing mark at TDC. Is that for the #1 cylinder? Then how do you find TDC for the rest of the cylinders? Are there timing marks for all?

Can someone explain the process of adjusting? Is it loosening the top nut then adjust with the bottom?

All my manuals donts seem to cover this at all.

Or should I just leave them be since I dont know what I'm doing and avoid messing it up? The engine seems to run fine.

    Thanks-Chris

  8. Since I have my maifolds off I'm trying to check the exhaust tappet gaps. Does anyone have a pic of the flywheel timing mark? Mine is hard to read thru all the flaking paint. When it says TDC what cylinder is it for? #1 or 6? My ferret is missing the timing pointer bolt. Can a timing light be used? Sure was a pain jumping in and out rotating the engine and looking for the mark. Trying to look in a mirror and get at the tappets is quite difficult. I still dont see a gap.

    Very confused
