  1. Hello, for those who might be interested I have just scrapped my Sultan bodyshell. Total weight of the completely bare shell, no doors, no glacis, empty, is 2300kg. I cut it in half using a 9" angle grinder and stone (metal cutting discs only work with steel) cutting discs. Took about 15 discs and 3-4 hours, much quicker than I expected. Price obtained was about £1600. Look to be worth more as scrap than as runners? Now for a CET? Prehaps not. I am puzzled, the fighting weight is just under 9 tonnes, so where do the other 6700kg go? The engine, tracks, gearbox, wheels, final drives can only be 1/2 tonne each, making 3 tonnes, so still 3700kg adrift. Bob
  2. Hello, whilst getting my Sultan ready for scrapping came across three brake discs. Marked FV385456, about 15" diameter and 1" thick, weight over 30kg, with large splined hole in the middle. No idea what they are off, does any one else know? Are they worth saving from the scrappy? Thanks Bob
  3. Magic, thanks for the help, had to be something simple. To answer other questions, the gearbox is empty of oil so not yet tried it. I intended to extract it and cobble up a drive and then see if the various gears worked. Not 100% but better than nothing. I am selling all the running gear from the Sultan. The tracks are near new, road wheels stil have their moulding flash, assume the rest is a similar standard. From other adverts and talking to people prices seem to be about £1000 for gearbox, £1000 for the two tracks, £50 for a pair of road wheels, not so certain for the swinging arms, sprockets, idlers etc. It is all on site near Scotch Corner, but I can move it to Grantham where I live without too much bother, I have a fork lift at home as well. Thanks again for the advice. Bob
  4. Hello, further uodate. Had some help so could waggle diff lock control whilst looking at the actuators. Only one was actually seized, the inter axle one. Good spray of Duck Oil and they all move freely now. The warning lights still don't come on, need to get a circuit to work out what is happening there. Apart from getting stuck, what is the best way of confirming that the diff locks actually work? Jacking up wheels doesn't sound sensible, no jack big enough anyway. Finally got to use the crane. Has anyone fitted a manual extension to it? Whilst it has a reach of 6m, that is still far too close for woodland work, another 6m would be fine but might just be a little too far, anything extra is better than nothing. Bob
  5. Hello, need some help before I reach for the oxy-acetylene cutter. How do you remove the gearbox from a CVRT? Had a hunt on the forum but nothing immediately useful has turned up. It is now at the stage where everyhting is released except the two drive shafts. I have a note about removing the centre covers in the sprockets and pulling the splined shaft out, done that. It comes out about 2" or so but gearbox still attached. What now? This is the Sultan I have listed for sale, being scrapped so removing the valuable items before the hull pays for Christmas. Thanks for your help, don't want to gas axe it out, really. Bob
  6. Geoff Don't know if you are interested, I have a workshop manual for a Commer 3 ton four wheel drive cross country truck, has the 4.7l 6 cylinder engine. Yours free except the postage, £22GBP, weighs 1500g unpacked. It is new and unused, and written when they cared about the information they put in the manuals. Did intend putting a photo in but iphoto shows the picture but the file name doesn't seem to exist in finder, oh well. From Commer Connections might be the S467, 13'11" wheelbase. Bob
  7. Hello to all, slowly getting the hang of these forums. I do feel a bit of a fraud here, all these enthusiasts here and I want to earn some money! Phew! I have a Scammell S26 self loading dump truck that is to be well used in repairing all the roads in our wood, about 8km of them. It was bought to replace a CVRT Sultan. An explanation. I have to shift lots and lots of spoil to repair the roads. The wood is very wet and steep, so a tracked vehicle is essential. So I bought a CVRT Sultan, stripped all the junk out of the inside and off the outside ready for some modifications. These involved cutting the whole of the body off just above the track mudgaurd level. This is when I discovered that the aluminium is 2" thick. Umm. Not really cuttable by anything. So, that idea floundered, any one want to buy a nice, empty, Sultan, comes with a VM diesel from a Range Rover. The Sultan was bought to replace an IFA Multicar. An explanation. I needed to get around the wood with some light shifting duties. I bought the Multicar and it seemed ideal, except that it doesn't have much in the way of brakes. It is still here, and the brakes are still missing. Anyone want to buy it? Pretty good, 4X4, diff lock on rear, tipping body with loads of hydraulic services, about 7000km I think. Before that I used to walk, got 4X4 boots but can't carry anything. Before that I ddn't have a wood, but I did have lots more money. Bob
  8. Hello, thanks for the comments. Yes, it is registered as a recovery truck and is MoT exempt, you just ask for the classification you want it in, bit of arguing but you are using it, not them. On the drive around the lanes, and I have now used it to shift and dump full loads of spoil, the brakes seem extremely efficient. From the maintenance manual the only brake test is with a Tapley, no rolling roads, but on mud and grass I would never get anywhere near the 80% required. Need the manuals to determine the level of the problem. The emergency stop on the parking brake does give some backup of course. Found that the tyres on the S26 DROPS are exactly the same size, so need to find a few spares, tree stumps really rip up tyres. Why did Scammell put the brake linkages from the actuators UNDER the axle? In fact the whole vehicle is surprisingly fragile, the smallest saplings move the mirrors. Has anyone fitted a roll cage around the cab? And what would you fix it to because of the cab tipping. Bob
  9. Hello all None of the diff lock air actuator pull (push?) rods move when switching the diff lock control to position 3, or any warning lights come on. Can I run the air system from a compressor to save idling the engine all the time, gets very smelly underneath, also hot bits. It has been bought to use, so the diff locks have to work. I have got a wheeled loader stuck in 2' mud and a Caterpillar tracked loader with the tops of the tracks under the mud, see the problem? I bought it from the advert on milweb, £7k, Hampdens wanted £8k. It is road registered and had a drive in it, seemed fine but it is of course 25 years old. I have no experience of HGVs so a bit of a difference, keep hitting trees in the wood and bending things, trouble is lots of trees and only one S26. Bob
  10. Lets see if I can get the photos in. Ah, does it not take a photo off your computer, jpeg type? Bob
  11. Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. Won't need a parking space though. It was bought to work in our wood, shifting tonnes of spoil to make a road. No doubt there are other ways to do it, just that this seemed so much more fun. Four trips later and I have destroyed two trees! One hooked up on the crane, the other caught under the tipping body when fully raised. I also see that none of the diff locks work. Is this a known problem? I assume they have seized after standing for years in MVS and Hampdens. Bob
  12. Hello to everyone, first post after joining. Got to get the question asked, have just bought an S26 SLDT, where can I get a workshop manual for it? The hissing of air makes it immobile some times, and there is a lot of pipework to check. How many other people wasted hours getting the tipper to tip because the tipper/crane control lever is marked back to front? Bob
