Hello
I have been offered a military trailer, and wa told it was a Bantam trailer, indeed the data plate says "bantam" and a date of 1944.
The problem is, the only Bantam trailers i can find are Jeep trailers with the sides that taper out, what i would call a normal Jeep trailer!
This trailer seems bigger and is made of wood with metal corners and has a tailgate.
Although very rough condition, the wood construction looks as if its original, as its very well done.
Were there any Bantam trailers with wooden sides and tailgate?

HI Colin
These two photos were taken in the late 1960s of a recent demobbed trailer of your type. It still has the post war reg plate attached but i cant be sure just how far back it was manufactured. Hope it helps
Fantastic photos! now i know what to aim for to finish it off, thanks!

The only way to reverse a drawbar trailer is to attach it to the front of the towing vehicle and push it, thus able to see it and steer it
I have been told that before, but there is no where to fit a coupling to the front of an Austin K2!
I know a chap who has a coupling bolted to his front axle on a Bedford OY for this purpose, but i'd be worried about bending the axle!?

hi Colin,
The info on tyre size came from the reprint of the Ministry of Supply Data Book of Wheeled Vehicles, circa 1944.
Richard
hello again!
Thanks for the info on tyre sizes! am i correct in saying that size of tyre is hard to come by now days?
Perhaps i should stick with the 16" wheels!?
Colin

Gary Grysa has one also, but in need of restoration. It seems to me to fill the same role as the Rubery Owen 2 ton dropside, that was built afterwards, They are similar down to a cross articulated front axle to allow off road use.
hello
Do you know if he has an email address so i could ask for some pics please?

It's quite a nice looking trailer as is . Does it tow as good as it looks? What would it max. road speed be 30 mph or so ?
Hello
Thank you, i think its rather nice too! as regards max road speed, i dont know! but i can happily tow it about 45mph behind my Austin k2 GS truck:cool2: but it kills it on hills:-(
Its a pig to man handle, as i cant reverse it:embarrassed:
Maybe i should sell it and get a single axle trailer!?

Hi Colin,
I would not think this trailer had 20" wheels, not with 5-stud hubs and insuffient clearance. It looks like a standard 2 ton trailer and they tended to have 9.00-13 tyres. Something a bit strange about the data plate, I cannot find the contract number in the Chilwell census number listing and the census number, X6140237, comes up as a 1 ton 2 wheel trailer of a different contract number. The range of contract and census numbers would generally put it at around 1944. It could have been part of a contract for the Navy or RAF, as they are not included in the Chilwell list, but then why does it have a army census number?
Richard
Hello Richard
The plate says 4 wheel trailer 2 ton, and does not look like it has been tampered with!?
As regards the wheels, a chap i know Barrie Hampson has exactly the same trailer, and he said his had 20" wheels, but i think he said he removed them due to availability problems and he fitted milk float wheels and tyres:shocked: so it was more level when towed behing his Fordson 1500cwt, and it actually looks ok!
I know nothing off these trailers, so i was hoping you might have some info of them!
I do know two things about it, (1) its a pig to reverse and i cant do it! (2) its blinking heavy when you have to man handle it up the drive:D

Can anybody give me somemore info on my 4 wheel turntable trailer?
On the plate it says:-
TRAILER CHASSIS 4 WHEEL
No9 Mk 2 CONT No 23/S7007
GN (or could be CN)? 9977 X6140237
I would like to know how old it is and anymore info really?
I believe it should have 20" wheels but has had landrover wheels and tyres fitted, and should not have wheel arches.
Does anyone have the correct wheels for it?
Thanks
Colin

missed it - came in about a third of the way through after duty. Did notice the squaddy with a Sterling L2 though!
Hello
They were only using Mk 5 Stens when i was there, sure it wasn't one of them?

Which wheel will give the best autograph?
Is there a price range dependant upon which wheel is used?
Will it come on a selection of backgrounds?
Mike
Hello
Probably the wheel that skidded the most! (more lost tyre rubber!!) i'll probably have to pay you to take the autograph off my hands
I can supply any background you like, i suggest one with a nice Pirrelli girl :cool2:

Hi colin,
it is possible make for me any clouse pictures on your GS body, and send me the measuress?
To Donjen: here is picture of the Austin with the "copula"
Hello Radek
I dont think my dimensions will be any good for you, as my truck has had about 2 foot of extra chassis welded to the back and a longer GS body fitted, thats why it get confused for a K3 all the time as its so long! i'll gladly send you the dimensions if you want still?
Maybe one day i'll convert it back to original length, but it is rather handy for carrying all the re-enactment gear around!!:cool2:

Hi all, I'm Don from Downunder and this is my first post. I'm hoping someone out there may be able to help me with my query.
I came across the HMVF site while trying to find any information on an Austin truck I saw when travelling between Lower Slaughter in the Cotswolds and Little Harrowden in Northamptonshire via Silverstone. We're not actually "into" military vehicles ... our interest is in vintage Austins (we'd actually been in Ireland on an Austin rally), but this old grey truck with a turret on top, was just sitting on the verge at the corner of a crossroad somewhere, probably north east/east of the Cotswolds. We were travelling with friends and just weren't quick enough to get the camera out to take a photo!
If anyone out there knows about the presence of this vehicle, we'd love to hear from you. It would make an interesting talking point with our friends at the Austin Motor Vehicle Club of NSW, Australia.
Hello
Not sure what you quite mean about a turret on top! but was it a "cupola" for observation!?
Attached is a picture of my 1943 Austin K2 GS truck, sadly with no cupola on Arromanche beach last year

Hi Colin,
Good question and the answer is no you don't as you will be with MNaW. The will be know cost to you as you are seperate to us. On the A&E website (which will be live next week) we have a Q&A section the anwser from there is below
9. I am a re-enactor/living history/vehicle owner and I am booked in with Maiden Newton at War. Can I still be involved with the event?
Absolutely but we ask that if MNaW has plans for you then you need to be with them. And you will have to complete and return the Armour & Embarkation *booking forms if you would like to attend the Friday soft skin convoy and Saturdays armour event into Dorchester.
*Booking form is now an online booking form - to make it easier and more efficent for everyone. No blooming paper work for you!
Hello
Thank you Jack, a sensible answer, and one much appreciated!
Sadly the other guy sound like he is from a "rich boys own club"
Colin
A working class man!

Colin,
I'm not a reenactor so this is a genuine question.
Is public entertainment the only reason you reenact?
A&E will probably cost me in excess of £1500 and believe me I can ill afford it but if it wasn't for the shows content and atmosphere for us participants, I wouldn't be doing it. I'm certainly not going just for the publics benefit.
Obviouisy i dont do it just for them, but they are an important part of why re-enactors do what we do. I also do it for myself but more importantly to keep alive the sacrifice thousands of people in this country made, so we can have the freedom to "Play" with military vehicles and all the other freedoms that we enjoy in this country!
You obviously have a lot more money than i will ever have! judging by your list of vehicles that you own! i own 1 lorry and that costs a fortune along with all the other things in life!
If i had £1500 to spare, i certainly wouldn't be wasting it on moving vehicles to events!
You obviously sound like one of those people who dont like re-enactors, (probably MVT) and i find offence to your attack on my comments regarding costs, i also have a young family to support and mortgage to pay, my own personal car was bought for less than you are going to spend getting your "toys" there!"
Please tell me, why you are bothering to attend a public event, if your not bothered about the public? so you won't get any pride from the potentially hundreds of members of public looking at your vehicle!?!

What was the standard equipment list used by the WWII Tommy from the Dorset regiment, 43 Wessex? I'm going to start collecting some Tommy stuff too but I want to know what I need first!
Hello
As well as being a vehicle owner, i am display organiser of our re-enactment group, "4th Dorsetshire living history group," we have members all over, and links with the "Keep" in Dorchester, and with "vets",
If you fancy joining us then please get in touch, we dont have a membership fee, but we do ask for "some" degree of commitment, but above all an accurate portrayal of the "Tommy" of WW2 and the will to enjoy yourself!:cool2:

Excuse my ignorance on this:??? but i am booked in with my vehicles with the Maiden Newton at war team as re-enactors, will we still have to pay the £15 each?
We have 2 MV's to bring down plus modern cars and caravans, so we will be feeding ourselves, and there will be myself, wife, 2 cadets plus in-laws, all re-enactors.
This could end up being a very expensive weekend away just for the publics entertainment!?
Sorry to sound a party pooper, but this could swing it for us not going!

Hello all
haven't been on here for a while, so missed out on whats been going on!
I need some help please! i have been asked to supply my K2 GS truck for film shoot this Saturday, by a fairly well known film maker, who is making a series of films about WW2 vehicles.
I will be interviewed by the guy and he will want some facts and figures about the K2 in general and in service, could anyone supply some figures on here? such as how many made, were they just used by the RAF, did they go overseas etc!
I cannot seem to find anything on K2's
Regards
Colin Murray

Cheers
There was a plan for the site but it always seem to go wrong!! as for the post war section most of these have been coming for years before wae rebranded the show so we cant realy kick them out, just keep them to the back away from the main part of the show,
Then you get the local mv group members who just turn up anway with more post war vehicles you dont need, and some mvt members who just want to line up vehicles!!!
We could do with a british reinactment group though:)
Hopefully the 4th Dorsets will be there next year! couldn't make this year because of Normandy, and last year the car went "bang" so fingers crossed for next year with the Austin K2 GS lorry

Colin, this looks as your lorry in the past.
P.S. I thing only a few of Austin K30, K2, K3 are serviving. The K5 and K6 to. :-(
Hello
Yes that is my lorry:shocked:
It was that colour and registration when i bought it.
I re-painted it and got hold of a period registration for it, but kept the serial number painted on the doors just in case they were the original numbers! but somehow i dont think so!
From what i gather your quite correct in saying there isn't many left:-(
Colin
P.S. thanks for the pic, thats made my day!
-
hello
Do you know what type of Austin it is?
Thanks
Colin

The 4th Dorsetshire living history group will be there (i think were already booked in!)
Along with my Austin K2 GS lorry and my mates Dingo (which i know is booked in!
So you have one piece of armour, one soft skin and infantry:yay:
