Hello
Can anyone help me identify my Austin K2 GS history a bit more?
The chassis plate on the body says "vehicle number" 38RH76 and chassis number 47122. rebuilt 1/52 M.T.R.S number B/265
Does anyone know anyhistory or where i could possibly find out?

I must admit I only enjoy military vehicles the dressing up bit leaves me cold, if something was to happen (please let it not happen) at a demonstration involving an armoured vehicle do you think that the government in its knee jerk reaction would not only ban the vehicles... would they heck. Extremely short sighted its not in my back yard why should I not be interested bloody selfish.
Quite agree, it makes my blood boil, but you cant tell some of them!?\!

This thread was posted on the wwiireenacting website and some of them said "good on them" and "why not?"
As a reenactor first and military vehicle owner second, and having owned a Dingo, i was quite disgusted with the attitude of them!
Its nice to be on a site where the contributors are sensible!

Lasy year i bought a "Rupert" a WW2 hessian dummy which they threw out of aircraft on D-Day with a small parachute to confuse the enemy for £1.50! sadly less the parachute>
What made it even better was a known WW2 dealer had been round before me and missed it :cool2:

I asked while I was there and the answer is Yes, it will be on TV, but they haven't sold the programme yet, so I don't know which channel or when it will be on. It might be a 'one-off' or it could be the start of a series. My guess is it could be sometime in the Autumn in the months before Christmas, but that is just a guess.
Hi
I was there too on Sunday & Monday with my Austin K2 GS truck, i asked the director/producer and he said they are doing it for the REME and will possibly try to sell it to various museums and possibly TV companies.
They have never done anything like this before, and hope to possibly make some more in the future based on other veterans stories if the demand is there!
Pictures are of "Lucy" with my field office display for the filming, but sadly we were to old to be extras.... i'm on the far left with "MM" winner Wally Harris on which the film was based.

the last pic is of another relation of mine
Many thanks in advance

Hello Iain
Uniform is WW1 pattern woolen serge service dress (SD) jacket with SD cap, standard for other ranks (OR's).
Trousers are woolen riding breeches, again standard for mounted units.
Leather ammunition bandolier as already mentioned by someone, finished off with "ammo" boots probably with standard 32 studs per boot!
Other pic shows KD (kharki drill) hot climate uniform.
Hope this helps a bit

looked like an apache helicopter flying over M1 jnct 30 ,
Get them all the time here in Andover, and more so in Hurstbourne Tarrant where i work, them and Chinooks come over the hills and right above the garage at roof level, gets boring seeing them now:)
Although the Hurricane buzzing by in the morning and coming back that late afternoon made up for it:-D

I may be stupid but. I am looking to buy a 1944 DR overcoat the rubbery? canvas thing. The site that is selling them has them marked in the sizes that are on the original labels. The biggest they have is size 10. How does this equate to chest size etc in good British inches.
Looking forward to good advice,
REgards

Hello
Usually with British clothing of WW2 the higher the number the larger the item, i have a large collection of British battle dress, and i know this is true for BD.
Sometimes the stated size doesnt necessarily mean it will fit:nut: i have 2 blouses that both fit me, one is size 10 the other size 13.
The only real way is to try it on, or get the owner to measure it for you.
Dont forget items that go over the uniform are usually bigger than the stated size, such as denims, jerkins, smocks etc :nut:
Confused yet?

Thanks for that Rob.
Well folks, what is this. Dare I call it a cap?
The markings on white background are under the lining. Ear flaps and ties fold inside tidy to make basic cap.
Allso saved from the bin!
Hello
Thats a British winter ski/mountain cap, cant think of the correct name at the moment, but used by ski troops & mountain troops.

I collect the above next weekend. My plan is to restore 'her' as a staff car. Whilst I am starting some research myself any assistance/opinions very welcome. As its 1939 I believe it would probably be finished in Mid Bronze green. Is this correct? How likely would such a vehicle have been then repainted later in the war to ie Micky Mouse camo? I will also need a believable 'M' serial number. I will probably finish her as a vehicle of 5th Regt Royal Horse Atillery (family connection) who were with the BEF then 7th Armoured. Any pointers to correct markings? All these questions and I havent even got her home yet! I am just keen to get it right rather than be corrected when the restoration is done! And I've never done a Brit MV before. Cheers Paul.
Hello
Not sure about mid bronze green, although early war military vehicles were a brown colour, kahki drab i think? and Mickey Mouse didnt come in until 1943.
We painted my father in laws Austin 16 in standard matt green (cant remember colour) with "M" number either side of the bonnet in white paint and under the back window.
Also had Divisional badge N/S/F & O/S/R with unit number on other wing.
Hope this is of help

They actually seem to be having a bit of fun, instead of being deadly serious...
Can we learn anything????
As a re-enactor of British infantry in this country, i found that very refreshing to see people actually having fun as you said.:-D
There is too much elitism by some groups in this country, who in my opinion spoil it by bitching at all the rest:yawn:
You only need look on the wwiireenactors forum to see that:nut:
I didnt see any of them portraying Japanese troops, do you think it is banned over there, just like it is in Germany to show the swaztica?

Hello Radek
Just found your thread and an email you sent to me asking for body dimensions.
I would love to help, but the body on my K2 is incorrect, and is made of steel not wood, so i dont think it would be much use to you!
But if i can help in anyway please ask, i have added some pictures of when i moved the body back so i could fit the spare wheel carrier

Cheers

Obviously I've ruffled a few feathers here (well one particular moderator's feathers anyway).
My name is Geoff Leese (same as my username), I'm sure that I've met some of you before.
I'm male, older than 50, and share my time between Normandy and North Staffordshire. I'm semi retired.
I'm the part owner of a 1942 Bedford QLR and have the enormous privilege to be the secretary and webmaster of the Gold Beach Living History Group and a trustee of the America/Gold beach museum in Ver sur Mer, Lower Normandy.
My main interest is WWII NW Europe British history, and I admit that however little you think you know about Historic Military vehicles, I know less!
Hello Geoff
Welcome aboard! havent spoken to you for a while now, any trips planned for next year to Normandy again?
We want to go back in the Austin K2 in kit, and see all the sites:)

I have a 1943 Austin K2 GS truck, it just keeps going & going (it'll break down now i've said that!)
I'm British and proud of it:angel: i would never dream of owning a yank vehicle, just like i will never do yank re-enactment, British all the way for me!
I'm a motor mechanic by trade, and as long as you maintain them they will keep going, plus they have bags of character!
Thats just my personal feelings:-)
