What of the 'Class 3' entry? Am I misunderstanding / misinterpreting?

Richard is probably better placed to advise on this but my understanding is the class A, B or C referred to age/perceived reliability. A vehicle would enter life in category A being brand new then at a certain point in a vehicles life it would be downgraded to B then at another point to C.

  2. Evening all, does anyone have a complete "take out" engine for a Leyland Martian (B81) ?

All ancillaries, bellhousing, clutch, sump etc

A long shot I know, looking to get a Martian back up and running

    Cheers Chris tel 07970 265 934

One of the two that David Crouch is selling by any chance???

  3. If we are talking fully autonomous vehicles (no wheel or pedals or gear shift etc.) then control of the vehicle must be passed "up the line" so to speak Either a central or interlinked regional control centre(s) will be needed to manage traffic flow. So the first issue that springs to mind is security. Imagine if you will motorways filled with cars, vans & trucks, all fully autonomous, guided by these control centres. A terrorist faction takes control of one of these centres and routes on-coming traffic into the opposite lane whilst dialling the speed up to max. The resulting carnage would make driving a 40 tonner into a crowd seem like a baby party.

  4. Missing record cards are a definite possibility - but long periods of time in store before issue to any unit are not uncommon. The record cards for 55 FM 58 show she was received by the MoD in January 1974 ( built in December 1973 according to Gaydon) but not issued until 1978. However, in fairness, the first entry on the record card is delivery to one of the CVD's on the Jan '74 date. Certainly the later MoD plates are more informative then the MoS ones. How things change. :)

But what ever - time spent in the Far East makes a nice change from the more usual UK/BAOR/UK service all the life :) Will make a good talking point when displayed at shows!!

Just a thought - might be worth asking on the various RCT/ex-Forces group pages on the web if anyone remembers that mil-reg. I found some one who remembered driving mine back in BAOR in the Seventies - and he's been promised a ride/drive once mine is on the road :)

  5. Interesting history!!

Delivered to the MoD on 6 March 1956

Held in storage until issued to 221 Base Vehicle Depot, Singapore in '67- so its widely travelled :)

Transferred to Ordinance Depot, Hong Kong in '68

Transferred to Central Vehicle Depot, Hilton, Derbyshire in '71 so now back in the UK

Transferred to the MT Wing at Bordon in '71

Transferred to the Vehicle Depot at Ashchurch in '78

Next line looks like it went to 41 Command Workshops for repair - can't read that too well

Comes back to Ashchurch Vehicle Depot

Issued to 235 (West Lancashire) Squadron Royal Corps of Transport VR - a TA unit in '76

Moved to 238 Squadron Royal Corps of Transport VR in '77 - during this time the UIN was changed from A3703B to A3705A

Moved to 562 Squadron Royal Corps of Transport VR - a South London based unit - in '80

Returned to the Vehicle Depot, Ashchurch in in '81

Moved to Ruddington for disposal in '83

So - your old lady has seen a fair bit of the world in her travels :-)

  6. Sills have been removed.

It would be Ex-Solihull with extended shackles , however in-service (MOD) I can't recall the raised position being used . If you do play with them - the sets have shim washers stowed with bolts, don't loose them - you should check they are there ,,

Mine is a '73 S3 FFR and the sill panels are fitted - going by the paint that was on them they've been there from day 1. Spring shackles look to be the same as the original posters.

  7. Hey Neil,

Should have gone to Specsavers! ;)

    Is an FV11008 18' - I thought they were 16' ?

Not that this one is, but I also thought there was a short GS cargo, FV11007 at 14' ?

  8. Hi Neil, to answer to your question, all the lubricating nipples take OC600 (EP140) but due to the adance in grease technology everyone probably uses grease .

    The following do take grease

    Generator spindle bearings (XG271)

    Starter motor spindle bearings

    Water pump bearings (LG280)

All other moving parts (linkages, door locks, hinges) are just oil can lubricated

This list is almost identical on Scammells too, all the above is taken from the D152 and R152 EMER for both vehicles

Many thanks Butch - will file this info with the vehicle data. Now to resume the hunt for a silencer that doesn't involve modifying the exhaust system. :) :)

  9. The lubrication chart only states oil for most and grease on a few lubrication points I'm afraid Neil so I'm gonna guess a general purpose oil :nut:

Something like OMD-75 or its equivalents do you think Andy?? Can'tt really see OEP220 or OM10 being suitable.

  10. Appearances can be deceptive

    The 8 is "Truck 10 ton General Service Cargo ( 18 ft ) 6x4"

As others say - she looks shorter than that so it would be worth taking up Robs offer to verify the chassis number.

Is the MoD data plate still on the chassis (passenger side just behind the tyre inflator? If so you can pull the mil reg from that and look it up on the RLC Museums archive web site.

    This is my plate:

  11. Most nipples on Scammells of a similar age are for oil rather than grease mate so it may be the case with your lovely new toy :-)

What oil would be used Andy? Lack of a servicing schedule for the Mk 1 make dumb questions inevitable :)

  12. Minor update - 5 litres of Jenolite and 2.5 litres of Bonda Primer got delivered today so as soon as the rain stops I can make a start on the rust that's not being cut out and patched.

One slight drawback to this is I have a shipping contain about 2 feet from one side of the vehicle and a horse box the same distance the other side - and the owner of the storage site doesn't like it being pulled forwards and blocking the yard on the weekends.

  13. In my observations in the "living History Field" some of it was not living history at all .

It was more of a convenient place to camp near the center of the site, a vehicle and a caravan with a cam net chucked over it or a couple of bivvy tents with a few bits scattered on the floor is not living history.

That was always a bone of contention for Greg, the marshal for that area. Unfortunately until whoever booked the pitch turned up there is no way of knowing what they are doing. LH at the racecourse was a bit better for this. so hopefully that will continue after the relocation.

Neil, just my thoughts on this, but. If they move the L/H section into America's field. There is a lot more room there. & keep the 'Old' L/H section for more vehicles. I feel this might be a better option perhaps?....:-)

Certainly a workable idea Mike. Until we see the site plan its all speculation - it is known however that the organizer has been in touch with the Historic Commercial clubs to try and get more civilian HGV's, buses and coaches there from this year on. Maybe they would go where LH used to be - although the bus owners I know would freak at the amount of dust thrown up by tracked armour entering the arena!! :) :)
