  1. no, swim gear off, wanted to reduce the weight as much as possible dowtys are heavy...and all the associated shafts bevel boxes and other bits...all off...saving over half a ton, plus loads of other bits, plus a tank only 20 gallons etc etc...winch may go next...contemplating options...would like to get her down to 6 tons, not sure if its possible, we will see...

Be very careful, if you are gonna reduce it's weight.... they weren't designed to run very far on tarmac etc when completely empty, as the increased angle of the Tracta joints will in turn increase the risk of damage/premature wear on the hub/bevel boxes, etc. You can get round it by adjusting the suspension so that it's ride height makes it ride as if partly weighed down.... this is why Saracens/Saladins behaved themselves better than Stolly's, when used on roads more. Their greater weight kept the tracta-joints/shafts in more of a straight line, i.e. horizontal:nono::readbook:

  3. No the original post didn't mention changing up, and neither did mine. I guess it also doesn't specify changing down. My reply did.

One other thing. Driving Ferret and Saracen in the real world under load, if you start being gentle with the GCP, you'll end up one day with your left knee in your face and a Ferret (or worse a Saracen) stuck in a false neutral bombing down the road and the force required to operate the GCP is incredible. Not a good time to be bombing along and out of gear.

No, it never happened to me personally, because I was taught always to give it a good kick and it worked. But it happened to enough of my friends.

I can vouch for this in my early driving attempts, yes it does take you by suprise and can be very painful,... it's something you tend not to repeat if possible!

  4. I was sent an email today by one of my 'contacts' and they are selling, admittedly by auction, rather a lot of Saxon based spares.....including New/ remanufactured Bedford 6 cylinder 8.2 ltr Normally Aspirated Diesel Engines... I have numerous pictures of them, you can have one for starting price £1000, or lots of 2, or 5, priced accordingly.

Looking at the photos, they seem to be very similar in physical size to the B80/81, exhaust is on the left side, so that suits Saracens/Saladins, also the crankshaft appears to be nice and low down, with the flywheel very close to the base of the shallow sump (dry-sump?) ...check out the picture...... they also have matching new fully auto boxes, relatively reasonably priced, although not sure whether they'd be easy to match up to the transfer box on Saracen/Saladins... might be ok in a Stolly though.... think of the extra oomph 8.2 ltrs will provide!:D:laugh:

  5. I was thinking of perhaps making up a water tank and fitting instead of the o/s/r bin.... away from the exhaust.... As for my current silencer, I think it'll survive a little longer with a patch-repair, for the time being... i know what you mean about heat there though!... you want to see how hot your left boot gets on a long run!.... especially in hotter climates like yours!.....

  6. Don't tell my missus, but, in my loft I'm collecting enough parts to build a supercharged B81 engine for my when my Saracen's B80 engine gives up, and a Mk1 Ferret........:nut::rotfl:-don't laugh! ...-I'm sure it can be done!

  7. Ok, thanks Montie, that looks fairly easy/straightforward, i look forward to seeing the 'hanger',... maybe this design could also be adapted, with internal baffles for making new stainless silencers for all the rusty, blowing exhausts there seems to be....:-\:-D,

or even slightly narrower, with the filler postitioned so it'll fit, and take up 1/2 the depth of a side bin, so as to still keep a bit of stowage space, (maybe it'll keep beers and sandwiches cool, too! lol!)
