  1. Got the engine (or most of it) back in the truck today, spent a couple of days cleaning and painting the engine bay and chassis, with the engine out it's the only chance you get to paint some bits of the bay. Mick
  2. I found this part in the back of our GMC when it came over from Norway, it may not even be military but as it is brand new it seems a shame to not find out what it is off. As you can see (maybe, bad photo) its a 5 cylinder cam shaft, the tube it came in has a Norwegian part number sticker That's say's; KATALOGNR 281512-142-8753 BESKRIVELSE NOCKENWELLE, RECHTS PARTNR 8380500701 The cam shaft itself has a part number 8380510701 KZ, it's 116mm long. Any ideas what its off ? Mick :? .
  3. Here are some photos Shopnut, we will be changing the fuel tank at some time in the future as the Clubmobile will need a regular LWB fuel tank. Mick.
  4. This is where we got our's http://www.jpdeacts.com/sarex/html/sales.html Mick.
  5. Yes he was very helpfull, we were looking for a WWII dated gun and this one was 1942. I had seen this photo and knew we had to have one for our Red Ball Convoy . Mick.
  6. Yes it is one of the JP Deacts Bofors, they had about 10 to choose from and allot of Quad Polsten's. Mick.
  7. Yes, a good book. We bought a Bofors last summer, still on the list of things to do. Mick
  8. Have you seen this web site Matt ? http://perso.wanadoo.fr/jp2k/2db/materiels_gmc_bofors.html
  9. Still working away, new aluminium timing cog's are ready to go in (we have 3 jimmy engines in bits at the moment ) Picked up 3 foot of chassie at the weekend but that will not go on tell next year. Before After
  10. Got this timing cog out of the workshop engine today, did I say bakerlite ? I meant plasticine
  11. Well I took the rocker cover off to find out one of the valves had stuck down (on this supposedly good engine), so the head had to come off, but it all came to bits quit easily and one hour later I had a surprisingly good condition fibre cog in my hands. I think the best thing to do now is strip the other engine and make one good one out of the two.
  12. Dam dam dam and bugger, Rather than strip our spare engine to find out if the engine's timing cog was made of bakerlite, I decided to drill a small hole in the timing case cover, if it was aluminium I was going to put a spot of weld on the drill hole and fit the engine but "BUGGER" our spare engine's has got one of the old bakerlite cogs in it, so is of with the sump to pull the camshaft out before I start putting the thing back in truck. What idiot thought of putting the two bottom bolts on the timing cog cover that you can only get to from inside the sump, if the bolts were on the out side the job would be so much easier
  13. Outside 24/7 365 days a year , I have never had any problems in 8 years of parking it there. Mick.
  14. I will post some photos of the work in progress on here as it continues. Mick.
  15. We have another engine for her, the one we took out has a crack in the block that has been repaired at some time in the past but not very well. The new engine is untested so I have until next weekend to check it out and give it a coat of paint, then its back in on Saturday (hopefully), Just finished servicing and a coat of paint for the gearbox so that is ready to go in next weekend also. Ok I will move it all over to "Blogs of MV restorations" Jack. http://www.hmvf.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=4666#4666 Mick
  16. Yep, thats where all our restoration jobs have taken place Neighbours are not too bad, I think they have given up complaining  Mick.
  17. The next stage/day Lots of fibre camshaft teeth in with the oil
  18. Made a bit of a start today but lost the light as the engine and gearbox was about to come out, try again tomorrow. No problem shopnut if we pull any good bits of I will let you know, no heater there. The French Clubmobile at Beltring was also a workshop conversion, looks good though. Mick.
  19. Hi shopnut, Yes we plan to copy the Clubmobile body to as close as it is possible, I intend to use the original body as scaffolding to build the new body on top of but I am unsure if I should remove the workshop outer skin first, also I have to lengthen the chasse about two and half foot but I best start with the engine. Mick The inside looks like this
  20. The Dodge drank just under £100 in fuel on the round trip (not to bad really, considering we where quoted £350 for recovery  ) We are hoping that Cara is going to put up a "work in progress" page on her ARC web site, to keep a photo up date of the truck. We have got a spare engine (got to give it the OK first and a good clean), I will have to make sure the spare engine has had the bakerlite timing cog changed first. Mick
  21. Well our future Clubmobile has finally arrived, The poor old truck made it from Newcastle docks to just out side Peterborough (200 miles) under its own power but then I got a phone call off the driver (at 3:00am) that he had run out of petrol and could not get it started again, he had called out the AA but the AA guy said "the fuel pump had packed up and the truck was to big for recovery". So I hired a car to get me and a new fuel pump the 120 miles from Farnborough up to Peterborough (I left at 4:30 on the Friday afternoon, it took tell 8:30 to get there with all the traffic on the M25), finally I got the bonnet up to find out it was not the fuel pump but the camshaft was not turning and the problem with the engine was allot bigger than I could fix at the side of the A1, so it was back in the car for the drive home (arrived back at Farnborough 11.00pm). At 1:30am in the morning we set off AGAIN with the 6x6 Dodge and solid tow bar, the drive took 4 hours in freezing conditions but by 5:30 in the morning we had hooked up the GMC to the Dodge and was ready to try and tow her home, the Dodge was slow at first but with a 15 minuet build up we where steaming along at 25 mph. We finally got home at 10:30am in the morning with no problems on the way. It took 44 hours to get the truck 320 miles home..!. Here are some photos before we start any work to give you an idea of what has to be done. and this is what it will (hopefully) look like in the end
  22. What a great film, We have 4 of them ETO Jimmys with the red disks on the front but I noticed there where no Red Ball disks on the Jimmys in the film ? Mick.
