  1. Dear all,

on the way back from a local show this evening I lost 4th & 5th gears in the militant. Every other gear works fine. I managed to get enough speed in 3rd to put it straight to 6th & run it the last 8 miles back to base. I can now attempt to put the box in 4th or 5th, take my foot off the clutch pedal & the engine runs as though in neutral. When the truck was hot it felt quite loose when trying to select these gears, rest felt normal. With my Dad tonight, we've checked the movement of the selector rod from the bottom of the gear lever to what we think is the 'relay' or 'remote' box bolted to the o/s of the gearbox and it seems fine. Thoughts are that its a part broken within the relay/remote box rather than the gearbox itself (I hope). 4th & 5th gears are in the vertical plane when changing up or down.

i welcome thoughts from those in the know. The photo below shows the selector rod coming in from the right cab end of the truck into the small relay or remote box bolted to the gearbox.

    Regards,

    Nick

interested to know what this is...

  2. 1st May 2017. opening day.

We have our new man. He is a very experienced engineer with a broad range of additional skills that will all go to helping him work on the varied and interesting projects we have.. He is going to get us organised with schedules and plans and maintenance programs. His first job is to get the museum temporary workshops up and operational. then we start the job of moving the vehicles in prepping them for the museum opening day.

the opening day will be a Bank Holiday Monday, with vehicles campers arriving on the Sunday some on saturday who may have complicated dsiplays to erect. we have a few re-enacters coming all cold war era but every one is welcome.

its the first event so I dont expect massive numbers but hopefully some of you guys will come along.

  3. hey everyone just an update, loads of interest and am hoping that over the next few weeks we will have our permanent resident Restoration Engineer on board. I am hopeful that we have at least 2-3 potential volunteers and maybe one or two more who seem to be interested. I am slowly getting the museum ready, digging in power and water and drains for toilets etc etc...its all go..

  4. Dan any help is great, i have so much to do it is endless, i have just managed to get my temporary web site up and that is good news, facebook is working but so far i have a pretty empty field and one or two machiens awaiting the building of rthe museum. its a log hard slog.

pm me and lets get together..mines white without sugar, by the way I too make the tea...

    Paul

  5. so far three people have moved beyond first contact, two interviews, one no go, he felt it was too much for him, and one now considering the position after first interview.

one still thinking about it and not progressed to interview.

but the job is still basically open and no official offer has been made. so if anyone else is interested let me know.

  6. I can't from the pic. tell if the Sankey is narrowtrack with rotating eye or widetrack with fixed eye , however I wonder if the owner failed to conform with the golden rule of Sankey(s) - somethingie of the draught must rotate , otherwise this is the result.

The wheelarches seem to be fitted with spats as if wider than std. tyres fitted.

Narrowtrack - you set the pintle to non-rotate , widetrack you set the pintle to rotate. Easy with a Rover with DB NATO pintle , however this Russian job may have had a fixed hook and the trailer was a bog-std. widetrack - bad news..

thats interesting information...anyone know why its like that.....

  7. yes the idea is that it will be a full weekend. with the main opening day on the 1st may...final details not fully ironed out yet but all are welcome...

  8. I dont know really, I guess I have to way up the cost of people coming and the fact that they will attract more visitors so i was not thinking of charging exhibitors at all..what do people think...

any money goes to the museum.

..its just my passion..i want to retire running the museum researching the cold war and writing books about it...and other books...

  9. Good luck with the museum, who knows I may be able to visit it one day.

1st May 2017, first trial opening day, we have re-enacters booked and gun displays booked, a small arena will be open and there will be a few stalls selling goods, as well as a number of people coming with their special toys to show them to the public...the arena will have three hills, 1 is easy, 2. is hard and scary and 3 is dangerous do it at your own risk of death...no insurance given. there will be a splash pool and maybe a very small floatation pool...not sure if that is doable at the moment but we are looking into it...

hope to have a few people come buts its the first day and the first event so if i can get maybe a 100 people show up it will be great...

it will be 'the cold war museum day... but all vehicles from any era welcome..

  10. got to agree, to get that level of traffic behind him he must have been in a day dream, but I seriously doubt he has been trained as a professional driver, even though he is...in reality it seems like the truck was the real problem, he should have moved over for that to pass as it would have been unlikely on an a road that he could get past.

we took our wrapper and front mounted tedder 25 miles in the late hours of the night to avoid traffic as we had to use major a roads and some minor a roads...can ver very scary...an accident with the tedder on the front would be very serious...

  11. I am in Mablethorpe, that makes the distance a issue. Got my C licence on a Dutch drivers licence ( no points)

And I am studying to become a welder. If the pay is good I can get my swb landy on lpg or get my 101fc as camper unit and go home in the weekends.

  13. Come live in the south it is great...I have a few candidates so far, but I have been planning this museum for the past 30 years. And i have no intention of giving up...

  14. Hi Guys here is the position again, apparently we had a complaint that I was asking for a man only, I didn't think I was but there is always one who will point out that it was not clear and there is a comment where I mention a single man, I should have said single person...

    so here we go again...

this job is open to anyone no matter their sex, religion, creed, age, colour, size, or any other criteria, if you can do the job you will be considered.

Hi guys I am looking for someone to help me with the collection. it is a full time job, pay is not bad Duties include the following.

restoring trucks, tanks, cars, tractors, engines, buildings, containers, maybe dealing with visitors, helping with fencing and keeping the place tidy, spraying, painting, managing the team of voluntary workers once we get a few. would definitely suit a single person with permanent accommodation available, as the accommodation is not suitable for a family, but even this could be adapted.

you would need to be able to drive everything ideally but courses will be supplied if you do not have your C+E etc.

JCB skills a bonus, crane driving a bonus but courses will be added to your skills.

it is an extremely varied job and will include getting involved in maintenance work on multiple sites. Trips abroad from time to time to collect machines and parts.

    This is an immediate opening

  15. stolly clutch does it all the time if you leave it engaged, very annoying...I had one that was very very stuck after water got in for a week. I put coke on it that helps free up some of the rusty bits, tried a bit of very carefully pointed WD 40 and after about 6 months of fiddling we got it freed.

can you get any access to the clutch plates, can you see if they are moving, are there two plates or a single one, the stolly has two and its the one nearest the engine that sticks, well it was with our one...dont know if that helps but it does sound like the same problem...
