  1. If you read the diversity of comments on this forum, I think the film has done its job. To me it shows freedom of expression is alive and well and the sacrifice was not in vain.

    Couldn't agree more

Bad news is the fuel gauge is still FUBAR. I tried disconnecting the feed to the fuel tap switches so in theory the circuit was dead and the gauge should not react at all when the ignition was turned on. So much for theory - the gauge still jumped to full. so something is earthing out on the gauge. Having removed the gauge from the cluster there was the expected no reaction. I think that, as much it seems unlikely the fuel gauge that was brand new OEM a couple of years ago is now faulty. icon_sad.gif Next problem then is going to be finding a replacement that won't cost an arm and a leg. Prices on the web seem to vary between £49 and £222!!! icon_eek.gif

Neil, I had a similar problem with my lightweight, fuel gauge reading full as soon as the ignition turned on, I also had a strange earth fault on the off side headlight, gave up on the fuel gauge and went for the headlight fault, cleaned all the eart points and re-terminated all the associated earth cables and low and behold both problems disappeared.

  3. I dont think either colour looks right to be honest. the left hand picture looks far too brown and the right hand one looks like BS Olive Drab, the colour of larkspur radios. Having said that trying to judge any colour by a photo on a computer is a bit of a risky business as there are so many variables in play.

  4. All the ATU boxes are the same and for Larkspur type ATU. The nearest champ has the earlier No 10 aerial base, usually associated with the 19 set and the others the No 28 which came with the larkspur sets. Functionally the two are more or less interchangable and it is quite possible that the No 10 was used if the champ had been up graded from WS19 to C42.

  5. Done a bit more rubbing down, the other side of the truck produced a very un exciting and predictable Royal Signals flash with unfortunately no lettering in sight. For some reason I failed to take a picture but here's the re-painted version

I then went back to the other side to see if I could get anywhere with the marking under the Troops under WO Control marking. Its much smaller, about 1/3rd the size and appears to be white on dark blue.

here's the results so far with the last photo with the edges enhanced. The tips of the two pointy bits seem to have traces of black lines suggesting leaves or feathers.

  6. In cases like this silk screen print on to suitable sticker remove the switches apply the sticker refit the switches.

most sign writers would be able to make it for you.

White on Black? let me have a dimensioned sketch and I'll make you one up.

  7. Ok then, I'll make a comment on the radio mast on the tank as no one else has. Looks Heath Robinson to me, and as it is a vertical radiator and with a WS19 on the bottom I'm not surprised they didn't make the distance. Way too far for ground wave from a vertical, they should have used a horizontal dipole or the 100ft long wire aerial strung up as an inverted L.

Not sure its a 19 on the end of that, its hard to tell from the quality of the photo but that looks to me like a larkspur ATU at the top of the mast, although it would be very difficult to tune in that position, but it may have been an improvisation to increase the range? Again difficult to be certain but it has the feel of a Larkspur headset on the vehicle commander.

The mast may be the interlocking sectional type fitted to the sides of K9s, not sure what its proper designation is.

Lizzie, the first light stone layer that was applied to my K9 was definitely gloss, I'm still looking for the "H" though

  8. AF I'm afraid that although I have quite a large number of these FVRDE Specs they do not include any drawings. These two pages cover your area of interest. As you no doubt already know, it states the interior is to be painted enamel gloss eau-de-nil.

Clive, sorry I missed this reply somehow. Thank you very much, as you say not a great deal of help without the drawings but every bit of information is useful, now if we could track down the drawings that would be another thing altogether.

Hello Clive what do these publications cover? I'm keen to get details of the original interior fit of my K9 wireless light but every photo /illustration for a standard wireless light I have found seems to cover the radio table end only. I would love to get details of the storage/battery lockers I have seen referenced in some of the manuals.

  10. Just to test your powers of observation with respect to the previous photo of the L.A.D vehicles. The K9 has both a REME arm of service flash (with white band and words 'LAD REME 2 R Tanks' and a Royal Signals one! Yes, that was the LAD FFW truck, complete with a real RS signals person though can't see the antenna mounts/connections nor can I remember without checking, which side of the truck all the antenna gubbins was. I'm almost sure I've seen it on either side. There seems to be 'something' on the cab roof, whatever that may be?

Lizzie, Ive been looking at the picture of the K9 and it seems to me that the marking on the near side is not the blue/white of a signals flash but possibly a red over blue and Lion, I may be imagining it but there is a slightly lighter patch on the top section, so it may be the HQ Egypt & Mediterranean Command flash you suggested for my K9. If the vehicle had been recently transferred it may account for the change in markings on the second photo.
