Yes we have the cylumes in Afghan, only visable through night vision.
-
I can also think of a few museums that would probably love to own one. Nice bit of history, no matter whose history it belongs too.

I've seen one of the Chieftains at Shiabah Log base in Iraq (when it was still a Brit camp) we used to use it for recovery training etc, apparently that was a left over from the Iran/Iraq War.
Shame they couldn't be brought back, although I've just seen a T55 on a ship a couple of months ago being shipped back.

Richard is correct, it's a tempory repair procedure called half tracking/short tracking. It's used to allow the vehicle to track under it's own steam thus not tieing up a valuble recovery asset, it wouldn't have traveled to far just to an area where more permenant repairs can be effected.

During my time in the Army I've seen many types of vehicle modified to suit the crew, especially REME fitter trucks, CQMS, SQMS etc, whether it's a Bedford, Leyland Daf, RB44 or whatever the unit trucks are. Illegal mods can take many forms from fitting cigarette lighter plugs for charging mobile phones, fitting beds, cooking areas, 24v to 240v inverters for powering TV's, Kettles,Playstations, Laptops, charging PSP's etc etc. During tours of Bosnia, Kosovo etc our metalsmith would build cages to house TV and DVD players which would be semi permenantly fitted to our Bedfords.
A vehicles were a little harder to modifiy than B vehicles and they were usually limited to inverters to power mobile phone chargers camping fridges etc.
You will never see 2 vehicles ever the same, every crew will mod their vehicle to suit, ingenius idea's to increase stowage is always an obvious mod and obtaining stowage racks and bins off A vehicles and then bolting or welding them to your vehicle will always give it that individual look.
BV's off A vehicles are always a good one especially for the OC's landrover and never fails to upset the REME vehicle mechanic inpsector when it come round for it's annual inspection. In fact all illegal mods have to be removed for the 12 monthly/6 monthly inspections. (unless your best mates with the inspector).
No 2 MV's look the same when prepared for exercise but when back in camp and everything has been stripped off then they will look the same-ish.
MV owners with no Military experience will try their hardest to replicate what they think is right and good luck to them, the anoraks with tape measures need to get a life, no one will ever get it perfectly right because what could be correct for one vehicle will be different to another. We should be thankful that there are people out there that give enough of a stuff to at least try and if that keeps them happy then thats ok.
I know when I finally get my own MV I wont give a stuff what people say about mine as it will replicate what I saw and did while still serving.
Great debate though.
Edited to add that some of the more ridiculous items that people add which clearly shouldn't be there are rather annoying.

Nice pics, I have one at work which was found with a load of stuff that should've been thrown out long ago.
Gave it a thorough check over and found it to be unserviceable so it'd gone in the bin. New one ordered.

A drawing out of a manual to show 2 sticks of explosives slotted into pre drilled holes on a concrete slab, det cord trailing from sticks of explosives, ready for a demolitions demonstration.

It almost certainly sounds like you have an air lock in the oil reservior/hydraulic ram. You will need to drain the old oil then flush it through before replenishing with fresh oil, preferably with an oil that the manufacturer specifies (or equivilent) this should sort out your problem on the ram sinking, ideally you should get it tested before lifting any heavy loads and certainly use axle stands and /or wood block to support the load.
As it's an old jack I would be inclined to replace it.
Hope this helps.

Maybe Recymech66 can get one of his sparky mates in REME to help us out???:cool2:
I'll print off your original question and give it one of the techs tomorrow, I aint even going to try and relay it myself lol.
-
That could go horribly wrong.
-
Hmm, an ex REME mate reckons they had only 'ammers, small, large and larger!
Only Recy Mechs have "ammers, small, large and larger"
-
But your's was done with much more finese and even a little linky, I like it.
-
Bottom ones a FV 434 REME variant, with Hiab for pack lifts.
-
Resupply and casualty evacuation are battlewinners, and so is CAS.
On the bottom the vehicle is the same....a plain, flat steel bottom.
They are not battlewinners in the same respect as Armour and ground troops, they cannot take and hold ground, yes AH can destroy and disrupt the Enemy but ultimately you need boots on the ground.
The choppers most people are crying out for are heavy lift, we probably have enough AH and fast jets to support the blokes on the ground.

Yes nice one, definately after Defender 90/110 but have to wait till posted back to the UK I think.
-
Correct. They are a one off. Didn't think we had any more forces out in Kosovo?
We don't (maybe a few stragglers left in the advisory role) thats probably why these are up for sale. I used to be attached to the Signals and they had a similar SatCom set up, these definately look like more up to date SatCom equipment obviously all the important stuff will have been taken out. I could be wrong though.:???
-
Weird looking, I wonder if they are Signals vehicles. They all look like civi pattern Land rovers with wolf wheels/tyres. Bet they're pricey. Eufor, they've obviously just come from Kosovo, nice.
-
Not bad for a 22 year old, hoping to buy my first Ex Mil Defender when I get posted back to UK or Germany, keeping an eye on the Classifieds lol.
-
Love that Defender, nice condition.
-
Wheels dont fair much better, where is our choppers.......
Choppers are great for re-supply and casevac but they are not ground holding battlewinners.
-
Dont really understand why they are testing a vehicle in its 1967 looking spec, arent they using an upgraded version these days?
Yes they are upgraded but the hull is the same.:coffee:
