  1. The last answers :-D The main purpose was not signalling but: The way of avoiding enemy observation was simply:
  2. The light is just so that it can be seen at night, its just another variant of the basic model. I don't think there was any intention for the flap model to act as a signalling shutter over the light source. They seem to be two separate variants.
  3. Wally yes that was a feature proposed for the more advance model where it was flipped back & forth to reveal a different colour or pattern or flipped in a coded sequence. It wasn't an anti-observation feature.
  4. Wally there were various shapes envisaged for signifying different things be that for a particular unit or a particular signal. But that wasn't the way of avoiding enemy observation.
  5. Wally yes illuminated for after dark use & option of different colours. This was illuminated by means of a wick. We've not really got the other purpose yet & how enemy detection was minimised.
  6. Wally yes one variant has an additional flap in the form of a semi-circle "b" on Fig 1 & 3 flapped in & out by the lever "d2" in Fig 4 So what is the variant on the right?
  7. Oh dear too much information given away too soon. So that was a waste of £5 or so! The inventor lived in Canterbury as it happens. So assuming the ebay image is unreadable :-D What was the primary purpose apart from communications? What are the features of the other variants? How was it intended to be used to avoid enemy observation?
  8. I bet they would have liked that John. Don't think it was adopted into service though.
  9. Oh crikey did you google it to ebay? Grrh! I only got it in the post today!
  10. Nope although a disadvantage of it would be that it was bound to get blown about a bit!
  11. Very good Richard spot on. There were several variants of construction & use detailed here. Can anyone explain these? There was also a purpose more basic than communicating although in the broadest sense it is also communication.
  12. Nope Wally Army. It is likely that the first experiments were done with 7th Dragoon Guards.
  13. Simon I think I know what you might have in mind, those particular devices if they did exist beyond barrack room horror stories make me wince.:shake: But no its much larger, the pole is for carrying it.
  14. This is what Richard & Bernard alluded to
  15. Andy nope (not an early OW mechanism :-D) not a projectile
  16. Not inflatable Wally although it does look rather bladder like & not for measuring.
  17. It does open out Bernard but you mustn't pick anything with this. Nope not a ball picker
  18. Nope, although funnily enough you are right in that there is a certain similarity
  19. AP 2782E Books 1 & 2 I've got both of these, they are quite big I don't want to part with them nor can I really copy them. But I don't mind doing the odd page if there was something in particular you were after.
