On the subject of bolts, anyone know the best place for them ?

Myself I never wanted the inspection it was all part of the Registration process....... just wanted the reg Number for insurance so I can swap a policy over etc. As the bike was complete at the time made perfect sense.

 

Cant say I'm keen on paperwork but just wanted to get it out the way and whole process went well, so all done and dusted. although have my plans for the future, I don't know what the future plans for me...... box of bike bits with a V5 probably a lot easier to shift than just a box of bike bits.

 

When I spoke to the the guy from SGS, he said more pre 1960 vehicles are being picked out for inspection and a high percentage of bikes.

New V5 arrived, .....All docs returned complete with a V948 for a number plate, bike now stripped and ready for the repairs, paint and rebuild.

The device under the piston, is doing two to three things as far as I can tell, one it holds the main crosshead pin and piston in position, it is acting as a type of stuffing box and skirt, and the holes are either lightening holes, lubrication or drain.

 

A modern crosshead engine, runs on guides were the crosshead is individually fed lube oil at a higher pressure that the rest of the lube oil system.

 

If you look at a Marine diesel two stroke, it will give an idea what a stuffing box is, (basically a gland box) its to stop any oil being drawn up and to stop any products of combustion entering the crankcase, also to separate the scavenge space from the crank case ( to stop the crankcase from pressurising).

I wish Ron, but I think a project such as yours would of been a big hit, small snippets will get lost on a forum but would be well documented in a book with plenty of pictures too. Its not just the restoration and build side, Probably a few chapters just explaining the Model itself, why, were, when etc....The build side, the data base of where or how you sourced the parts, folk who can do and make parts etc, all good info. Maybe something to think about next time......

Thanks WD, must admit I can't say I was too keen on the colour itself but when it was mounted for an Inspection, I was more than impressed... few pics below, if anyone is looking at the wiring its only for photo purpose...... also the rear light ( think most will recognise it) there is a few shades of green on the bike, but the 2nd pic shows Nato green on the chain case, tomorrow begins the strip down for a total repair and repaint......

Inspected today, seemed to go all ok, I forgot to mount the speedo but he made a note the seat cover and speedo were getting restored. I give it a clean yesterday ( rub down with oil) and fitted a rear light and the wiring loom and battery box. Although mentioned in another thread, I'd painted the tank (service brown) I'd left the masking tape on the taps and no fuel pipes were fitted. Its a standard way the DVLA wants pics done, so pointed out the bits he wanted, frame, Engine and G/Box numbers, rest were just basic pics. Top, front and rear view......Over in less than ten Minutes....Now ready for the strip down etc, I mentioned in another thread I'd started on the tank and didn't have much look with the paint, all sorted now but was a bit apprehensive with the colour ( Matt service brown) but compared to the rest and in the light must admit it does look good.

Things seem to on the up, got the refund for the decals, the paint I bought, I phoned the shop some time back and they said bring it in as the Matting agent may of seperated, took it back today so they could give it a mix and do a test strip, the test come out a sheen so they added some more agent.

 

I ordered the book " British Forces Motorcycles 1925-45" about three months back, as there was still no sign I cancelled the order, on the off chance seen one on ebay a buy it now, which arrived today.

 

Tried the paint and has come out perfect (although the light doesn't do it justice), whilst drying will be reading the new book.

 

 

Called SGS yesterday they got back to me today, examination for Monday 10th Oct, will let everyone know how it went.

Thanks Ron, in one of the replies they said they would need to see a complete bike, I guess its like you say to stop the fraudsters, maybe they were a bit concerned about the engine number as its a later engine? As I did send pics of the bike with the application, Armed with your info I doubt I've too much to worry about it. The tank will certainly stand out due to the new colour but have pics of a before and after.

Lex has gone AWOL! He's not answering my emails either. I gather there's a lady-friend in the pipeline. Ron

 

 

Thanks Ron, thought it was just me.... started a thread in the Legislation, Licenses & Registration section, regarding an SGS examination, DVLA wants me to contact them so I can get a V5 and Reg no etc.

Thanks for the reply, no not a Member of any you mention, Included with the application was a dating certificate from the matchless owners club, plus photo's etc, Just wasn't sure if the SGS examination is the norm for military vehicles etc. Reading through a reply from the DVLA it seems its more to confirm the frame number, just a pain having to assemble everything then remove it again. I could wait till its finished but would like to insure as soon as I can.

Has anyone had an Vehicle examination done by SGS ? only ask as I,ve applied for a V5 and reg number etc for WD Matchless, and have had a letter of the DVLA to contact SGS for an examination, just wonder how in depth is the examination?

 

I replied to the DVLA as the bike is being restored, I've made it clear bits are missing but could put them on for an examination, the reply to this was everything I mentioned whats not on the bike at present needs to be, such as Battery, wiring loom, lights, speedo, tank etc.

I still have a bunch of original Lucas taillamps, guess I should have stored them inside!!

Thanks Ferg & Richard regarding paint, some other bits I bought I have returned for a full refund and got a partial refund on a carb I bought which was very generous from the seller, managed to make one good one and saved a lot of cash so maybe things are on the up....

 

Hope to have the engine and gearbox on the bench and the rest of the bike striped in next few weeks so guess that's when the fun will start....

OK I see. The 211 is certainly slimmer than a 110. But why not simply buy a repro fag end as well.

 

I thought that's what I was buying Ron, I was comparing it to a few pics I took of a matchless (and others) at the W&P,

 

Everything I seem to source for my WDG3L seems to be wrong at present, even the paint I got mixed looked good and did a test piece all OK nice matt finish, until I sprayed the tank and now have a Satin finish service brown tank.... probably two many coats or not enough thinners on first application.

This is the one I bought to make something as close as original, with the intention of fitting another rear light which I can fit and remove when required.

These repro lamps have the benefit of an ordinary 12v stop/tail lamp bulb. Easily changed for a 6v. Ron

 

Ron, they are cheaper from, feked.com I bought one (along with other bits) the intention to make the bracket etc, but I'll certainly buy one of the ones Alex has (if he has any left and PM on the way)

I'm selling a large portion of my bayonets, mainly 1907's with a few 1888's and 1903's have two hooked quilion 1907's also.

Decals..... anyone tell me the best place for decals? I seen some on the internet that I purchased but there just glossy stickers? is this what to expect or are there ones more like transfers like the old air fix kits etc.

 

They were a sheet of white decals apart from the tank M which are silver, its just the fact I'm doing the bike in matt and wasn't expecting shinny stickers, looking at other pics etc on the net they seem to blend in on the bikes they are on ?

After a bit of jury rigging, resetting the timing, a bit of paper wedged in the throttle to keep it secure on the handle bar, a flush of oil, stop the carb from flooding etc etc....... I got a start and runs like a swiss watch, needs a bit more on the advance and plenty of other things but grin factor was ear to ear......:-D main concern was the oil return which it eventually started........ probably only seconds but feels like minutes......

 

A busy winter ahead for shore but just wanted to hear it run....... few tweaks tomorrow, need to sort carb and attach new cable to air valve.

Looking for some parts for a WD G3L, the bike is 1943

 

so any Petrol tank for that period or even later one...... not worried on the outside condition but inside must be free of major rust.

 

End cover for Magneto (not the points cover) the cover that contains the adjuster for advance and retard.

 

Lucas Regulator 6V

 

choke/air lever (brass) to match one below.

 

Tyres to suit Dunlop K 70 or similar.

 

Any other NOS parts that may be of use.
