Got this posted in another group - took the briefest look and noticed some military books. Not sure how shipping from Oz works but, thought you might be interested

Thank you, I do love my Land-Rover. Espacially the restoring part.
Thanks! For cleaning such dirty parts I put them in a bucket with soap and warm water. For about 15 minutes. Then take them out, wipe most stuff away with a towel, after that, again in the bucket with fresh warm soapy water. And repait this process couple of times. Most stuff will come of. Stuff still on there I scrape off with a knive or something like that.
It takes some time, but I would like to have a tidy Landy after all.
And not a mudbuster covered in grease and oil:blush:.
All the best,
Jan
Easier than i expected. Thanks!

Well done! What are you using to get everything so clean?

Not sure what is more impressive that it works so well or that you have a friend with a private locomotive to test it on! This is amazing, thanks for the pics and the update. Just one quibble. Clearly the first lift is 1/3 ton plus a cup of tea! Accuracy is important

Thanks' date=' the engine and gearbox housing are made of aluminum. I just used some steel wool to get the dirt off and then some aluminum polish.[/quote']
Wow thanks - why do I always assume things are harder than the obvious.

Looks lovely! May I ask how you got the engine so shiny?

May i just say that I find this all absolutely mind boggling. I restore a normal car in the normal way and figure i have done something remarkable but this takes both skill and madness to a completely different level. Keep the reports coming - i am in awe.

Not exactly sure how it was with military vehicles, but, MOWOG green is only party accurate. My understanding is that while the engines were painted green, in reality they just kept topping up the vats with green - so, there is no standard green, just a variety of shades of which Moss picked one.
BTW in MG world, a MOWOG is also a mythical three foot high creature with four inch long fingers suitable for undoing the nuts under the dashboard - and various other tasks.
