  1. TNT had the contract for the storage and maintenance of the GG's. It was decided to try to update them and they took a standard GG, replaced the engine with a cummins, replaced the gearbox, added new lights, sirens and locker doors. They painted it this lighter shade of green and offered to re-furbish the rest of the fleet at a cost of some £25,000 each. I think that you can guess the Govt's response! Hence it is a unique vehicle.
  2. The Museum of RAF Firefighting has just added another two Green Goddess vehicles to its fleet bringing the total to five. This was the fleet with an Op Fresco GG, an army GG and the unique TNT prototype Th Courtesy of one of our members we have had two more donated:- A fully AFS badged GG and...…………. the one below left. We are considering turning it into a Northern Ireland GG complete with yellow paint etc. However, does anyone know whether there is a set of the metal window screens and the hose reel locker doors available for either swop, purchase etc?
  3. According to the numberplate it is a Luftwaffe vehicle (WL).
  4. I was issued white ones when I joined the RAF in 1977.
  5. Am I missing something here but isn't this a truck? Why hang stuff off the wagon when you can shove it in the back!!!!!!!!!!
  6. Extremely powerful video. I am a serving paramedic and hope this is continues to be an event free christmas - road traffic wise. I am working next Wed and Thur nights so I hope it continues. Everyone has the right to go out and enjoy themselves - just do it responsibly.
  7. The hangars at Crudington (do you mean Crudgington?) are part of RAF High Ercall. the following USAF units also operated from there:- 309th Fighter Sqn, USAAF, Spitfires 27th Fighter Sqn, 1st Fighter Group, USAAF, P-38F Lightnings 92nd Fighter Sqn, USAAF, P-39 Airacobras (later Spitfires)
  8. RAF Atcham located 5 miles east of Shrewsbury was transferred to the United States Army Air Force on 15 Jun 1942 and operated fighter aircraft.
  9. I know that this is a slightly different compass ie a Mk 8 RAF WW2 aircraft compass but the advice I have been given is as follows:- "If you don't have a spirit hydrometer with gauge 0-99 (a beer gauge is no good) to make up the required mix of 0.81 specific gravity, (as alcohol reduces the specific gravity of water to below 1), try the following recipe which is good enough for display purposes only. Pure alcohol is very difficult to acquire in small quantities so buy a bottle of surgical spirit (98% proof) from the chemist (the odour will not affect anything), together with a small quantity of distilled water as used to top up car batteries. A ratio by volume of 89% surgical spirit to 11% distilled water is about right. Pour both very slowly into a clean measured container. Mix thoroughly and notice the liquid will appear to be cloudy. Leave undisturbed with a cover over for a week. It will clear. Try not to move the liquid at all to avoid bubbles. Carefully fill the compass using a syringe and tubing ensuring there are no bubbles but occassionally tapping the compass to dislodge any small air pockets in the compass." Hope this helps.
