  1. Hi Rob. Basically, no it didn't stop! I worked away from home 7 months of last year and each time I got back it p***ed down constantly. I got fed up to be honest so decided to cover the whole lorry up and leave it until I had more time. This has meant I have got the Land rover stripped and almost rebuilt ('cos it fits in my garage), but this autumn and winter I've got much less work on and I will be back on the Scammell with renewed enthusiasm. In the meantime I've been a bit of an armchair spectator :( Still it gives me hope when I see you and others getting vehicles back into good shape. I have been asked why I don't sell it, but I just can't do that. I may only make progress a bit at a time, but it IS progress! Certainly a couple of weekends work will see the cab panelled.

How's your repair job holding up? Cheers. Darren

  2. Not sure if this is actually American as I don't know much about them. Have already posted this in the 'Spotted today' thread but thought it was more at home here:

Saw this Jeep today parked outside my work in Aix-en-Provence. I don't know anything about it as the owner wasn't around, but I haven't seen a trailer like this before. It looks like the vehicle is in regular use and it drove here under it's own power. A nice contrast to all the modern stuff which I see every day in the town centre. Can someone fill in the details please?

  4. Just watched BBC nature programme and the presenter is in the countryside wearing Hi-Viz jerkin and a hard hat ! Watched a programme about narrow boats the other day and the two presenters had hard hats whilst crewing a narrow boat ! I now consider myself very lucky to have reached the rip old age of 45 without being killed by the sky falling on my head ! :D 1966 was a good year for several reasons ! :D:D

H & S gone mad mate. My neighbour trims his hedge wearing a hard hat but the hedge is only chest high. I still haven't figured that one out :nut:

  5.

Even the very last AECs were a class act, Shame Layland made them rush the v8 into production too early.
Dad drove one of the AEC Mandator V8's on trial for Turner's of Soham and by all accounts it was a bit of a beast! Far ahead of anything else British at the time and more than a contender for the Scanias/Volvos which were starting to appear. They just weren't allowed the time to sort the reltively minor things which gave problems before the project was shelved. He reckons the engine was so powerful and the vibration so great that not many runs were completed without some part of the cab having to be bolted back on. I'm sure they would have sorted that too...:cheesy:
  6. Used to drive by a very early series 1 80" landy parked next to a rundown house and slowly disappearing into the bushes. The elderly lady there said it belonged to her son. Phoned him and offered decent money, explained I was a genuine enthusiast etc. No way he was selling. Phoned a few more times over 2-3 years and said I wanted to restore it and not make a trialler. He wouldn't even talk to me. 6 months later it went so I stopped and asked the old lady and she said it went for scrap along with various bits of farm machinery around the house. Shameful. She'd even paid someone to take the stuff away....:cry:

  7. This any good? http://www.launcestonsteamrally.co.uk/ Held just off A30 in Alturnun near Launceston and the MVT have a collection of vehicles most times. Eden project def worth a visit and I think you can pre-book. Never bothered myself as we normally go ice skating there in the winter. If you want to PM me with details (age of any children/your interests/where you'll be based etc.) I'll have a think and suggest some places. Daz

  8. Can recommend NFU. I have a policy which covers the Scammell and various land rovers both on and off the road. When I buy/sell they simply adjust the payments accordingly. No fuss and you get to talk to a human being who knows about vehicles. Have tried to insure things in the past with a standard or online insurance company and you just end up trying to explain simple modifications to the vehicle to someone who couldn't care less, even if they knew what you were talking about. NFU sometimes charge a bit more for a car policy than other insurers, but the difference is not a lot.

  9. Just seen the news and apparently only 9 people have radiation on their skin and clothing. Experts say that if it hasn't gone into their bodies they'll be ok. Not sure I believe that for a minute :nono:

  10. Apparently May 21st will be judgement day and the world is ending on October 11th after five Months of earthquakes, war, pestilence and fire (oh, and some death too). Those who profess to know about these things certainly give the impression that it is going to be a pretty nasty time. Still, on the plus side, that will give us enough time to do the London to Brighton.

Sounds almost like a Monty Python sketch!
