Looks to be in very nice condition , one thing the puzzles me is the ships wheel inside , is it the rare experimental aquatic version used in the D Day landings ?:-D

No worries mate. It was a great stoke of luck that I heard that the old fella was travelling your way. Cardiff is a damn long way from Cairns, but with a good game of pass the parcel, they ended up there. I now have to repay the old guy with a spin in the ferret when he gets back. I will send you a list of the Clansman parts I have, with photos. They are all NOS and come from ex Australian military surplus parts.

130 million yen to restore it! Half the guys on here could have done it with a ball pein hammer, a file and a roll of fencing wire. They should have got us to do the job. hahah

Depends on what time of year you are trying to ford the Murray. At certain times you could drive across without getting the wheels wet.

I would love it! What power plant is in it. Is it the original engines or has something been retrofitted? What are your plans with it? A complete version and a hull came up at the Melbourne auction about ten years ago, but they are the only ones I've seen outside of Pucka! The fact that they were cast makes it bloody difficult to retro engineer a new top half, but at the right price, it would be awesome just to have half a Cruiser! Cairns is a bloody long way from you, but thats never stopped me in the past.

One part molasses to 9 parts water. soak for a couple of days or up to two weeks. Thats obviously if you dont have a cement mixer.

I'm not entirely sure what your talking about, but their should be two points in which to oil up your bevel boxes. JAck the Ferret up so that the wheels are off the ground and rotate the wheel so that the 'filler' on the outside hub (the one you can see when you are standing beside the vehicle with the wheel on, which requires a hex key to remove, is at 3 or 9 O'clock. Fill it until it overflows. Put the cap back on. The external hub is full.

The inter bevel box. For the front, on the outside, remove the filler (see attached picture). You will see that this filler is blocked by the steering arm, so you will need to turn the wheel, so that it is clear and you can put a socket on it. take out this filler bolt. Now, the front left is easy as all you need to do is get inside the hull and remove the filler plug on top of the bevel box, which is situated beside your left knee, when you are sitting in the drivers seat. Place a bucket under the bevel box under the ferret just under where you have removed the bolt behind the steering arm. Get back inside the ferret and carefully pour oil into the bevel box from the inside filler plug. Do this into oil spills out of the external bolt hole. This bevel box is now full. Put the two filler plugs back on.

The other three are a bit more tricky, as access to the inside filler plug is not so easy. So, what I do is take the external filler bolt off and get a bit of garden hose about 1 mtr long and place in the hole. I then get a funnel and force it into the other end of the hose. I then slowly slowly pour oil into the funnel and let it slowly fill the hub. This process is slow, but a lot quicker than trying to access the filler plugs from inside the ferret. After I think it is full, I let the oil settle into the bevel box and come back about an hour later and have another go at it, just to make sure its full.

This is my system and seems to work. Others may do it differently and have better ways of doing it.

I think that was also contributing to the oil in the bottom of the hull. I have tied them up and degreazed the hull out today. So I will start it up tomorrow after its all dried out and see if I can see where its coming from.

Yes, as soon as I get around to doing another one, I will photo the entire process. I was chasing a gearbox oil leak today. Its really got me scratching my head. Im probably going to have to bite the bullet and pull it out and work out where its coming from. Damn.

I got it all back together. Minimal oil leak. Significantly better than the cork seal. I now need to do the other three. I think I will pull the front ones out from inside, rather than taking the suspension assembly off. The other rear one will have to come out by taking the suspension off.

I wonder where the chrome Ferret ended up? I havnt heard about it for a while.

lol i broke the news to the other half after i'd bought them, she was horrified at first thinking i'd blown a £100k again but she was fine once i told her they weren't far off scrap value. she has now inadvertently given me the green light to buy as many tanks as i want as long as they are "bargains" :cool2:

 

i am now on the lookout for an early cent turret or 120mm gun. i quite like the idea of the qinetiq test bed tank doing the show circuit, i could polish the barrel and breach ring and maybe put some chrome wing mirrors and light bezels on it like the glitzy ferret that comes back up for sale now and again on ebay.

Wow, thats really interesting. I have a heap of these things. They are incredibly well made and are packaged in the usual way. I suspect it was probably a mount for a radio that was only used for a brief period of time. It wouldnt be unusual for the military to acquire something that was obsolete before it became issued.

As for the last picture I sent, a lot of engineering has gone into this thing. Ive never seen this on any of my Ferrets or Saracen. I cant even think what it might be used for.
