  1. Hi Robin, Hope your Christmas was a good one and many Thanks for the help. We're slowly getting all the bugs worked out of our Ferret. Next month we'll be removing the transmission to replace all the brake bands, but in the meantime, I'm working on correcting as many of the "easy" defects and deficiencies as possible. Happy New Year to you. Cheers, Chris Preston
  2. Greetings All, Would anyone have a clear picture/drawing/image, etc, of the correct fender mounts for both rear-view mirrors for a Daimler Ferret (and a source for them)? Our museum's Ferret has one mirror, bolted to the left-hand smoke grenade launcher, using one of the launcher's wing-nuts (which isn't very secure and the mirror arm keeps moving). Could anyone help out with a photo of the correct mounting and dimensions for the arm? Happy New Year to all, Chris Preston, Victoria, BC, Canada
  3. We finally have working turn signal in our Ferret. We had to re-wire the Turn Signal Switch-Box as someone had done some unauthorized mods to it, and now we have working turn signals. Thanks to all for your input . Cheers, Chris Preston, Victoria, BC
  4. All, Thanks for your replies. I should have clarified in my original post that we have a Ferret Mk 2/3, and not the original issue Mk I that Canada purchased. I'll be checking the wiring inside the junction box more closely to make sure we have it wired properly (amongst other things). Thanks again for your help. Cheers, Chris Preston
  5. Greetings All, Is there someone on this board familiar with all things "Ferret" that can advise/help me out with sorting-out the turn-signals in our museum's Ferret? I have working head-lights, side-lights, tail-lights, and brake-lights, but no working turn-signals, despite having power going to the turn-signal junction box and light sockets, as well as working light bulbs in all four sockets. I've pulled the junction box out and opened it up and replaced the turn-signal relay (someone had fitted a Bosch unit in there) and replaced the actual turn-signal switch above the relay, and still don't have working signals. Consultation with someone more knowing (electrically) than myself makes us wonder if the actual switch itself has the wires properly connected to it from the relay, once it's mounted inside the junction box. We're wondering if we've replaced the plugs correctly on the terminals on the back of the switch and can't confirm becuase the wiring diagram originally inside the unit is vertually useless. Can anyone advise? Cheers, Chris Preston, Victoria, BC, Canada
  6. Hi Terry, All the lights have power to them - when I turn them "on" they all light up/ When I activate the turn signal switch to indicate a right or left turn - nothing happens - no flashing. The light in question continues to remain on. It appears that someone has replaced the correct flasher unit - (a Lucas 24V/48W flasher) with an incorrect Bosch unit of 24v 2 x 18w, so I'll be ordering a new Lucas one. Cheers, Chris
  7. Greetings All, I've got the brakes sorted out on our museum's Ferret and am now tackeling our lack of turn signals. I have power to all the running, side and brake-lights, but no turn signals (no flashing, although the lights are burning). Today I pulled the complete black turn-signal unit out of the Ferret, and opened it up. Inside I found 2 units with the top one being the right-left turn signal switch with 6 terminals, and the bottom one being the actual flasher unit (?) with 3 terminals (and the one I suspect has failed). This unit is a Bosch 24v 2 x 18w flasher with the following number: 0 336 102 026. Is this the correct unit, and if so, where do I find one? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Chris Preston, Victoria, BC, Canada
  8. Greetings All, The decision has finally been made to purchase new Transmission Brake Bands for our Daimler Ferret, pending removal of the gearbox/tarnsfer case later this year to facilitate same. That being said, I've enquired with suppliers in the UK on the availability of Ferret Transmission Brake Bands, and have been advised that I'll only need four, rather than five brake bands and linings. I'm confused, as the Ferret has a five-speed transfer case/gearbox. What is the correct number - four or five, and are they all the same for all five gears? Also..... are the brake bands ready to drop in, or do they require some final machining and cleaning up before mounting in the gearbox. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Chris Preston, Victoria, BC
  9. Greetings All, We finally have our museum's Ferret cooperating with us and almost road-ready. The transmission and brake issues are being resolved and we hope to have the vehicle operational and in the annual Victoria May Day Parade on May 19th. One reamaining question I have is what is the correct "Run" position for the fuel-cock mounted next to the fuel filter on the rear bulk-head of the Fighting Compartment? Is the "Run" or "Main" (tank) position counter-clockwise, to the left, or turned clockwise to the right. I can't find any indication stamped anywhere near the fuel-cock, or any mention of the correct position in any of the manuals I have. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Chris Preston, Victoria, BC, Canada
  10. Greetings All, So far so good (with this forum - I actually managed to get the photos posted). The two photos are from the Ferret I'm working on - under strict supervision of course. Our Ferret will start on the first turn but will not move when the gear-change pedal is depressed. We've gone through all the pre-start checks as per the manual, as well as the "manual adjust" with 30 depressions of the gear-change pedal, with no luck. We're able to move the gear selctor lever with no problem, as well as the forward/reverse lever, but the vehicle will not move. We removed the cover plate over the tranmission brake bands, and saw that the transmission appears to be stuck in 4th gear, as per the photos below. Any thoughts on what's wrong (and how to fix it)? Cheers, Chris Preston, Victoria, BC
  11. . Greetings All, The museum association I belong to has a Ferret with gear box isuesI think we've found the issue - we took the cover plate off the top of the gear-box (the one over the transmission brake bands), and discovered that in addition to a fluid change being required, the gear-box has been stuck in 4th gear, and probably for some time at that !! The gear-selector lever will move easily enough, as will the transfer-case lever on the left side, but we can't get the vehicle into a lower gear. We'll be investigating further on Saturday. One of the more mechanically trained that myself has recommended that we take the cover plate off on the right hand side (with the gear-selector lever), and see what's going on inside the gear-box (if we can get it off). We're thinking that someone else has done that with the vehicle still in gear when they removed the cover plate, and couldn't get it out of gear after that, and replaced the cover and left things that way). Any idea what oil or fluid people are putting in Ferret gear-boxes today? We have "OMD80" stencilled on the gear-box cover plate, which translates into 30wt oil. Your thoughts? Cheers, Chris Preston, Victoria, BC, Canada
  12. Hi Tony, Thanks for the welcome. As for operating a Ferret in Canada, I'm on the west coast where it's almost tropical compared to what the rest of the country has gone through this winter. That being said, we did get some snow here last month. The Ferret's down for some long overdue TLC and repairs/maintenance - we hope to have her operational by May. Cheers, Chris Preston
  13. Hi Everyone, My name's Chris Preston, from Victoria on Canada's west coast, and I'm a new member to this board as of yesterday. I've just recently retired from the RCN as a CPO2 after 44 years of service as a reservist, and am also a retired Victoria Police Officer with 25 years of service (2 careers !!!!). Now I can "relax" in retirement, and carry on building scale models and working on 1 to 1 scale operational, vintage military vehicles at a local Cdn Army reserve unit that has a museum with 16 operational vintage military vehicles. To say that I'm learning a lot about vehicles would be an understatement. The one that I've "inherited" for care and maintenance, and driving is a Daimler Ferret Mk 2/3, which I'm working on the get operational for our display season that will be starting shortly. I'm looking forward to learning from everyone on this board in the future, and hope one day to have my own vintage vehicle. Cheers, Chris Preston, Victoria, BC, Canada
