  1. Today we had a good look round the Polsten and worked out the method for taking the gun off the towing platform , I now know why you need some strong men ,  We unlocked the Guns so they could go up and down and unlocked the revolving central mounting so the guns could spin round , Then we started the engine which was surprisingly easy and we were away , There was some hydraulic oil coming from the breather on the top of the pump so that will have to be sorted but all in all we had a successful day

  7. If anyone would like to bring a vehicle to one or both of these weekends the first being July 9th and 10th and the second being September 3rd and 4th , All military vehicles are welcome and camping is available for military tents , These events are very popular with the public as they are free to enter , During the weekend there are 40s singers and music , Marching bands and a flypast there are lots of pubs and food outlets nearby as is the beach and amusements , These events are organized by Harold Payne owner of the Anglia Motel on the A17 at Fleet near Holbeach Lincolnshire, These events are staged to raise money for Veterans of the 2ww and The Anglian Regiments Benevolent Fund for local heros , Anyone wishing to attend should contact Harold Payne on the Anglia Motel website http://www.angliamotel.co.uk or myself paul at egghemmings@yahoo.com

  8. Don't remove the plate on the top Paul this is the top cover for the king pins. What you are looking for is the small recessed slotted plug on the back of the ball housing remove this and screw in a grease fitting and fill carefully with liquid grease be careful not to overfill.

    Pete

Thanks Pete , I will have a look after work tomorrow that is the only lubrication job i have left to do , I was pleasantly surprised to find all the grease nipples took grease , Not bad for a 1945 Motor ,

  9. Hey Phil , I had a very nice surprise today , I took out the driving seat fitted a large light laid on my back with my legs up the back of the cab and looked up behind the dash it was all my nightmares come true , The wiring is so stiff you could not move anything , I tried to track the power in wire but could not see where it went, Then in desperation i gave the current limiter a tap with the screw driver and hey presto everything came on , The power to the lights was restored , Thanks for your help Ian the wiring diagram was very helpful as was your picture showing the back of the dash and the whereabouts of the limiter , By the end of next week i should have my windows and the door for back of my Chevrolet motor home and i thing the access steps should be finished by mid week , My next job is to turn the swan neck on my Ben Hur trailer up the other way to lift the ring about 5 inches so it rides better behind the Chev , Thanks again , Paul.

  10. Hi Phil , Until i saw your fleet picture i had not realized that i was already using your website as a reference centre , I have found some very useful stuff on there , I have put a picture of my fleet on showing my Landrover Defender the Chevrolet Then the Morris Commercial C8 GS and at the end of the line my Montgomerys Office Caravan Replica i have also Just purchased a Ben Hur trailer to pull behind the Chev , Our first show of the season is the first weekend in May at a place called Stradsett Park the fleet 001.jpgin Norfolk, Paul

  11. That is a great line up Phil you have a great choice of rides , What is the length of the radio box internally . My rear body is about 12 ft inside , I do not have a shower as we only stay in the lorry 2 or 3 nights and a strip wash is ok , Our temperatures rarely reach high enough for air-con so my biggest consideration was the gas warm air heating . I designed mine so when it is closed up it looks like a normal canvas back with nothing showing on the outside , I will do a line drawing of the interior,Have you got any pics of the inside of the radio box , Thanks Paul.

  12. I will be taking the dash out in the next day or so so i will let you know what i find , I have been busy converting the back of the Chev into living accommodation so my wife is happy to come with me i have tried to attach a couple of pics, Paul

  14. Thanks for the info Phil , I started with all the front and rear lights and both indicators now i still have the indicators and ignition and she will start but no lights at all and that is with the plug removed with the plug in i have indicators on the light board but nothing else

  17. Hi Pete , The top speed is not a problem as i run the Morris Commercial C8 so 40 mph is positively flying but it just seems to die a bit when you go from third to fourth, On the spark plugs you and Phil seem to be singing from the same hymn sheet I think the biggest thing to get your head round is the centre throttle pedal , Paul

  18. Hi Paul

Welcome to the wonderful world of CMPs. To your question about what speed is a 1945 C60L comfortable with, first question is what rims and tires are you running? I drove my Patter 13 C60S radio truck for years with the stock 216 engine, we would kid that it would do 0-60 MPH in 12 minutes on flat ground. That was running the truck with 20" rims and 11:00 tires which is a slight rubber overdrive so that when the truck is reading 50 MPH it is closer to 60 MPH ground speed. I have some video links on my web site showing the truck from the drivers view. Few years ago I reengined the truck with 261 Chevy and the truck will now very comfortably hold ground speed 60 MPH and can clime 9%grade in third gear dropping to 30 MPH.

Having said that I have also discovered that not all CMPs are happy to be driven above 40 MPH they just really start to feel very busy and vibrating. As Peter points out 40 MPH is the comfortable speed for driver and truck. Of my 3 CMPs only one is a really comfortable road machine where you can drive it 250 miles in a day and not be totally worn out at the end of the day and turn around and do it again the next day. (That's driver worn out.)

When running in Convoy our club generally puts the slowest vehicle in the lead, and before I up engined my C60S which weights 10,500 with the radio box as drag was often the slowest. I have lead convoys on the interstate were I shifted through all 4 gears on the on ramp and then never took my foot off the floor several hours, never faster than 60 MPH never slower 30 MPH.

There is another issue of fuel C60L they are thursty beast. Also there does seem a problem with the modern gas in US that it burns a lot hotter and thus cause problems with manifolds and valves. If a 216 engine exhaust valve clearance gets to "0" you can burn a valve in 50 miles this is particularly a problem with the bigger CMPs which tend to be driven full throttle or foot off the gas. While because the smaller CMPs are not driven this hard there is not the same problem.

    Cheers Phil

Hi Phil . Thanks for getting back to me , You seem to have a lot of experience of the CMP lorrys , What spark plugs did you run in the 216 engine , On the fuel issue i think i will add lead substitute to the fuel , Paul.
