  1. just thort i would add my bit to this as i many people know whether its work of play most of my time driveing is spent going extreamly slowly

its all well and an a extreamley gd idea to have your mv higly visable from the rear if your going to plod up and down the moterway at a slow speed but just because u think you have made your vehical HIGH VIZ dont think you are compleatly SAFE

most of the near miss situations i have had when i have been out escorting slow loads are caused by drivers ingnorance . time and time i again drivers in cars and more so trucks leavt till there 30 ft from the back doors of my van to evan think about pulling out to pass evan tho i have been in plain view for the last 500 yards there just to big headed to slow down. and when there doing 56 mph and i am doing 10 mph 30 ft soon disapears . but they all ways make it out just in time to miss me . but what about the next vehical behind the one that just passed they are now left with less than 30 ft to react slow down and pass and this is when you are most likely to get hit in the rear and unless peoples attidude changes u will never cure this problem .

the only thing i can say is that watch your rear view mirros like a hawk and if your vehical dosent have very gd mirrors get some fitted . if travelling in a group dont tail gate or u if u do get hit you will just get pushed into the rear of the vehical infront of u . travelling in a small groupe of 3 or 4 is safer as u will find that the flow of traffic will slow down just to have a look at whats goingon . some people mite think this is more dangerous but from my view its allways beeen safer for the person at the back .

just beat me too it daz

  2. I think there is a danger of twisting the chassis winching hard out the font or at least if the pull is not straight breaking the fairlead casting off. there are two extra cross members welded under the front of mine which may have helped the chassis put up with the abuse. I just like the look of it now and it makes removing the engine very easy as i can just put one jack under the front.

Oh by the way i'm home:-D and what a weekend....Super weather, great company, beer, camping and playing with with steam locomotives till very late. Plonked on at 25mph all the way, nothing go too hot and i had great fun. They roll when they warm up don't they :D The whole thing is like a different truck and the old Meadows seemed to wake up after a few good miles, I only dropped out of top twice on the way there and three of four times on the way home. And the fuel ecomomey is much better:-D:-D:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:

glad shes running well rob they are a compleatly diffrent truck when there warm . u will also find the weather makes a big difrence in the old meadows mine would go like a rocket ship and a cool damp day but on a hot day forget it u mite aswell walkj :-D:-D

  3. Looks a nice bit of proper engineering on that shaft and the bearing carrier. Bet it wasn't cheap.

When something looks right, as this does, it should go without problems for a good while.

Just one question, what about lubrication for the bearing on the shaft? Is it just a grease it up regularly job? It'll be running more or less all the time at full engine speed, the original input shaft bearing would have been well oiled form the gearbox.

Just noticed the grease nipply on the bearing housing. :red:

and i even used the right grease nipple so i dont have to have two grease guns on the go under there :-D

no its wasent cheap stormin but as u say when it looks right it normaly is right

  4. Hey man....If its getting you down come and tell us, we can help cheer you up and laugh lots too:) Really looking forward to seeing some pictures:cool2: Don't be shy with the camara now:laugh: Are you using the Scammell oil bath filters? just a thought but i know someone who fitted a turbo engine in a landy series 3 and the bloomin thing pulled the oil up from the filter it sucked so hard... It will probrobly be ok but i thought i would mention it. Someone else on here might have already done it

it has been getting me down a fair bit lately but its more a time thing , things were going bad last weekend, so had to walk away and i am glad i did in the end .

yea planning to use the scammell filters Deputy had all ready warned me about the sucking oil problem he used the scammell filters on his 290 rolls and just runs them with no oil in just a light coating over the mesh ,

  5. Whats all this about you getting your Scammell fix.?.. I hope there will be some footage....And hows this engine conversion thingy getting on:-)

a very gd freind of mine gave me kind permission to look after his meadows petrol explorer last weekend at the bloxham rally . the it did get to me at one point and started haveing silly day dreams about petrol explorers but dont worry i am back on track now as regards to cummins progress i have no evidance to back up this claim of petrol perfection apart from the silly grin on my face :D .

tomorow i shall be up bright and early and this bloody cummins is goin back in the truck where it blelongs and it will stay there this time .

i will get some pics up tomorow after the days work

but so far the engine mounts have all been sorted throttle cable has been sorted clutch is in the final stages of being tweekd as is all the other bits that go with that . exhaust is in the planing stage and so is the air intake .

but tomorow we hope to get all the clucth and bearing carrier to gether and engine seated in the truck where it will hopefully stay .

for all who follow this thread i appolagise for the lack of work being done lately but things havent been going to plan and i will admit at times it has been hard to stay positive that i will get this done . i have decided not to attend war and peace this year as i dont have the time at my disposal :embarrassed:

  6. rearly must get round to doin an update but time is rearly killing me at tho mo mate ive been out driveing for the last 3 weeks now and with the weather naff all has got done . but the engine is now mounted :dancing: but engine has been removed again so we can continue to tinker with the cluth arangement progress is being made but god its slow

    nick

  7. progress is still slow at the moment rob i have a bit of up dateing to on here to do. The engine is in the rails at the momment but only just sat there on some wood . front mount has been made and backs have been re-engineered so they fit . so its just a case of bolting it in when all the other bits come to gether. still working on clutch at the mo mate . will update soon as i get home as i am out driveing a low loader this week .

i did read about your little disaster. there was a complete gearbox on ebay the other week only went for 350 quid i did have a bid but not haveing a fancy phone its hard to stay near the laptop to win the thing . hows it looking now ? looks like u had a nice run out tho u need a good run out for a couple of hours to get every thing nice and warm will drive totaly differnt then .

  8. And Finally on the the mighty Meadows........Well it's not so mighty:blush: It sounds fantastic and the exhaust was heard 2 miles away:whistle: It is a tad woeful on power and won't be rushed. We have some good hills here and we slowed up almost to the point of a down change However on the little track home it ran out of puff and had to hill start in 3rd:blush:

:coffee: well i am saying nouthing :coffee:

a meadows is the perfect training aid for gear chageing because no matter how many gears u go down the box the greedy little sod will allways want one more . and by then your at a standstill . just wait till u get the back body done and add a little more weight to the old girl

as for the noise i take it u havent got yourself a pair of ear defenders yet ? thats the only fix for that :-D allways drive with atleast one window open to let the noise out .

rearly glad to see u on the road tho rob

when u and scammell couming to get the other MIGHTY MEADOWS ? maybe you could legthen the bonnet and get them both in one infront of another ?

  9. any idea where i can get an old tarpauling like the one you cover your scammell with? It seems like the answer to my lack of shed

not off the top of my head rob mine was donated to me by a wealthy organaization we shall not say more than that ... spose u could find one one on ebay i am note sure i keep playing with the idea of haveing one made just to fit over the back body so i can keep that on while running down the road aswell .

  10. Bloody hell Nick no danger of your engine falling out there then:wow: All looks pretty spot on to me. carry on:-D

its all the power rob all the extra weight will help keep the front wheels on the ground .

as i say i dont know wot i am doing so hard to tell if wot i have made is good enough for the job

  11. Whats the problem with the engine mounts? Stick some pics up perhaps we can offer some advice ect.:-)

well the problem is rob i am really in over my head at this point and really cant decide which is the best way off doing things . i have never done anything like this before so am really crawling around in the dark with engine mounts .

here is what i have cooked up for the rear mounts so far .

idea is that everything sits inside the chassis rails but i have made a mistake and its a bit of a tight fit a present, need to mill off 10 mil each side on the steel blocks to make more room in there

  12. any joy with engine conversion thingy yet? News of piccys ect. Don't you dare just post a video of the finished job ticking over:-|

now would i do a think like that rob

dont worry i havent rearly done much these last two weeks finding time is hard at the mo but i will admit these engine mounts are really starting to worry me now i have test fitted it once and that was a fail . and where now back to the drawing board , and i am still wating for my clutch shaft :embarrassed: and how was llandudno ? are u on the road yet ???

  13. mine just gets standard grease he,s not lucky enough to get oil . prop shaft might get some high temp grease if i am feeling nice . once again rob i think your on your own at llandudno mate . explorers owners annomous is meeting as rushden again soon as i get this engine in and my new clutch shaft turns up i will be haveing a prop made to fit the explorer flanges .

  14. Shiney... When you going to oull your finger out and put it in the truck:D Fingers crossed mine might have a run out soon:drive: if the DVLA get their act together. I fired it up yesterday and my mate thought i was outside his house... he lives a mile away from me so i might need a silencer...NOT:whistle:

u cant rush great works or art rob :-D it wil be done when its done . gd to hear that u will be on the road soon you can test your crane out if u want and come get this garden ornament out of my way :-D

  15. just another update

have got round to fitting the jake brake which turned out to be easier than i first thought basicly it is just a bolt on job took me about half a day to fit the only tricky thing is setting the tapppets after as the jake brake houseing makes access to the adjusting screws a little tricky there are specialist tools for this but that costs money

    just a few pics :D

    P1020593.JPG

  16. whats happening here then all gone a bit quiet again.........any more progress? Have you got it in yet?:D

i was wondering when u would be on my case about the lack of work being done at the moment :D

i am currently on the drawing board with some engine mounts that make it easy to get the engine in and out ( not that i plan takeing it out again ) have just had the cummins twinplate clutch relined so thats gd as new at the moment and is just awaiting the new longer clutch shaft to arrive which is being made my a local company it will be identical to the original cummins shaft but it will have a set of splines on the end to take the orginal scammell coupling flange . the bearing will be supported by the front face of the gearbox which i cut out and all that is needed to complete it is a top hat section to house an oil seal. will have some pics of that up as soon as its done .

have got new clutch brake for the cummins bell houseing aswell which can be changed without haveing to take anything apart . all done through the clutch inspection cover ,

only other job is fitting the jake brake but i havent finished reading the manual yet :readpaper:

some bloke in a transit pickup keeps bugging me for the meadows saying he will give it a gd home should i let him have it ? he sounds a irish bit to me

  17. just another up date

the dirty deed has been done and the meadows has now left the vehical i dont think i could have done it with the front crossmember in . on closer inpection of the engnine something is not right with engine numbers as there are two engine plates on the side and both seem to have different numbers on

to get the u botls off the front cross member i lifted the front of the truck up with the crane untill i could get all the nessesary bits off and then dropped it back down on to some blocks to support it while the axel is disconected .

    001.JPG

  18. That looks cheap. Don't you go making too much extra work I want to see it in the scammell running. Have you got my meadows out yet?

it was cheap buy one get one free so i have one to sell eventually to cover costs . i was thinking weather to fit it now or later but i think it will be easyier to fit in a nice warm workshop rather than falling off the mudgards every 5 mins .

meadows is not out yet but it is disconected and waiting just need a weekend where work dose not get in the way and i have the crane to lift it out ,
