1. Nick, I had the Militant for around 8 - 10 years or so, but she was sold about 3-4 months ago and now lives near Hastings area, the guy who bought it drove it back home from Northumberland to Hastings 12 hrs :wow: not bad I think with the old girl. I'v been following your progress with yours very good keep goin you'l get to the end eventually.

There was no major reason that the Foden needed to be on the back of the Militant other than a bored Sunday and spare time to play.

Thanks Simon, will post some more progress today. Do you know what colour (BS code etc) yours was? Looks good & I am tempted to replicate on mine when I finally finish the red oxide. It took me 6.5 hours to drive mine back from Horsham to Derby. Luckily I had read on here somewhere about taking ear defenders.

Another Foden pic I found

2. Wow what a beauty! They really are good looking vehicles that ticks all the boxes for me. I would love one but its the keeping of it and upkeep if things go wrong, probably wrong outlook I suppose. Had a look on a website that was advertising one for approx 9000k, it looked really good but all that shines may not be to my eye! Let me know how your getting on in putting the old girl back on the road.

I'm lucky enough to have a large transport depot behind where I work so can work on the truck most days, weather permitting! Fingers crossed the running costs won't be too much with the right care & my works contacts (I'm an hgv maintenance manager). If it was on Milweb then it may be one I have seen before it went to Dave Crouch's. Very clean if so.

3. Thought Id share a couple pics of my Foden recovery Military Reg no 35 KE 26, fully kitted except for snatch blocks and a couple bits of the wooden planks, now lives on A69 Northumberland.[/

Hello Simon, smart truck - any more photos of it? Regards, nick

4. Hello Adrian, more excellent photos-not heard or seen the SRTE vehicles before, sounds like a proper boys toy :cheesy:

If you navigate back to the main forum and click on Restoration Blogs you should see one called 87 ET 77 Militant on the first page-that's mine which I am slowly working on. I have yet to find any service info about it, contacted REME but no results-will try RLC next. If you Google image search the civilian rev BHH 34J there are some historic post service photos.

Regards

5. Any photos you can share from your time on Drops? And did you find any issues...

regards

I used to train guys on DROPS as an instructor within the RCT, I notice from the video the flat rack is of the later type which is fitted with rollers such as the civilian rack have today, initially the racks had no rollers and the hardest part was lifting the rack onto the vehicle without ANY movement of earth under the rear part of the rack as it leaves the ground. Don't ask me why it mattered but that was the standard of training at the time. We would set the racks down on grass and upon picking up any damage to the surface would result in a fail!!! I hammered these new DROPS at Driffield on the cross country course, instructions were to try to break them to seek out issues before mass deployment.
6. Done a bit more on the Militant this week and have acquired a Swindens vice for the rear vice mount from a chap called Bryn in Loughborough. He has a ready & varied stock of restored & unrestored vices of all sizes. If you need one please pm me for his number.

7. Few more bits done whilst the sun was out;

1. Tidied up the wiring for the new Britax beacon.

2. Continued with the red oxide.

3. Checked operation & lubricated the spade anchor - is this meant to drop under its own weight without the hydraulics engaged? With them engaged it appears to move up & down fine, hydraulic oil needs topping but is not drastically low.

Also, does anyone have any photos they can post or email showing the interior rear section of the cab please? What I assume to be a radio mount & battery box directly behind the engine cover & passenger seat have been removed in mine. Any measurements would be appreciated too. Many thanks.
