1. Dear Sir,

We ahve a Constructor Here in Ireland and she was also in the RAF as she had a yellow roof etc,Her Chassis number is in the list above (10573) she was later changed to green There is also a yellow Crest on the door with daggers crossing (I'll try to put up a photo If anyones interested as I'd like to put it back on the doors),does anyone know what it stands for The paint is flaking but I'll get a photo of it even thou it will be hard to make out.

In the mean time I'm off to get a photo!

    See ya :D[/quote

I was the driver of the RAF 30 ton Scammell. The sign on the doors indicated that she served he time with the support squadron in the Gulf.

The sign shows '' Crossed Kungars '' crossed Arab knifes .

I have photographs of the Scammell in Aden - Gulf - UK.

In the UK at Waterbeach she was 21 BT 40 or 21 BT 42

Hi Andy (got it right this time) No connection at all with Scammell i only paid one visit to the factory in the month the first Commanders were ready for delivery so i can say i saw them come and now of course ive seen them go Jordon i believe for £1.00 each. My collection has amassed form nearly 40 years of collecting material mainly on wheeled vehicles and having a habit of leaving no stone unturned ie i hound any one i find has served in the forces to borrow snapshots, chasing manufacturers though not much left in the UK to follow up and countless establishment visits and of course rallies. There is plenty more to come including other nations heavies now thats a point i observe the Britsh items are split in to type threads is it best do this with other nations or say German, Dutch, Swedish HETS and group that country under one thread to save space on the site

    cheers

  3. Hi all.

I'm planning to built a scale model of a Coles EMA mobile crane and I'm looking for photos, manuals, plans, anything that can help me.I have done an internet/magazine/books sweep with poor results.

I have found that there is one example of this crane at thee North East Aircraft Museum(N.E.L.S.A.M.) in Usworth,Sunderland, but they don't answer to my emails.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

    Maybe I can help.

I live only 3 miles away from the North East Aircraft and know the machine you are talking about.

  4. Hi Shaun. Is your Landi a 24v or 12v? Never seen or heard of any radio kit fitted in that spot (all a bit big for that) I have seen a couple of Airportable's with SLR mounts there but with different brackets under the mount itself. This pic. is the set up in mine 24v. and the SLR fits a treat. A pic. with a bit more of the bulk top between the seats may help folks to help you.

    Andy.[/

Weapon holder for SMG folded down.

Seen a SMG that dropped out off the weapon holder and dropped on to the 2 radio batteries in the rear of the vehicle.

SMG was welded to the side of the Land rover and a two inch hole in the SMG magazine.

Just as well we had no live rounds.

  5. Certainly has sparked the memories. I haven't got any photos but I do remember seeing this railway kit quite regularly. I was based at 40 Group Royal Engineers at Willich in the early eighties. There was a substantial rail network within the camp there, and a lot of kit was moved in and out by train.

There was several of the railway guys in quarters near us, but I cannot remember any of their names just now

I was based in Willich during the 60's I was driver on SCAMMELL LOW LOADERS.

My wife and I attended a reunion in Willich in July.

There will be another reunion next year 2016

  6. Interesting tyres on the RL with its front end torn off. Are these standard commercial highway crossplies?

    John.

I served in Aden during 1966 and 1967 We moved up to Oman after that!

As to the tires and other things they were in short supply. We used what ever we could get our hands on.

Look at Flicker and check on '' Oman '' you will see the Bedford RL Recovery on single sand tyres all round.

    Hi,

I used to drive the Scammell with the yellow sign on the doors. There were two Scammell's

    I think that they were 20BT41 and 20BT42. Both were at Waterbeach --- 63( Airfields ) R.E.

The sign on the doors is Arab Knives crossed swords ( Arab Khanyar's )

The squadron was the Arab Gulf Plant Support Squadron.

  8. Hi Everyone,

My name's Chris Preston, from Victoria on Canada's west coast, and I'm a new member to this board as of yesterday. I've just recently retired from the RCN as a CPO2 after 44 years of service as a reservist, and am also a retired Victoria Police Officer with 25 years of service (2 careers !!!!). Now I can "relax" in retirement, and carry on building scale models and working on 1 to 1 scale operational, vintage military vehicles at a local Cdn Army reserve unit that has a museum with 16 operational vintage military vehicles.

To say that I'm learning a lot about vehicles would be an understatement. The one that I've "inherited" for care and maintenance, and driving is a Daimler Ferret Mk 2/3, which I'm working on the get operational for our display season that will be starting shortly.

I'm looking forward to learning from everyone on this board in the future, and hope one day to have my own vintage vehicle.

    Cheers,

    Chris Preston,

    Victoria, BC,

    Canada

Hi Chris, welcome to the club.

Just retired from 25 years on construction projects all over the world. My interest's are military vehicles and model making of the same.

    Regards

    Sean

    U.K.

    Sean,

  10. Hi Mark, do you mean this unit?

There is quite a good little museum at Waterbeach Barracks with a reasonable photo archive, but your best bet would be the contact on the link I've posted, Ron Snook. He is most helpful and knowledgeable - well worth making contact with him. He has many links with ex airfield service folk and with luck he might even be able to put you in touch with one of the old drivers.

I used to drive both types of Scammells ( Army and ex RAF) at Waterbeach.

    Maybe I can help you.

  11. Lee,

Looks like a hacked about 1/2 ton trailer.

    Chris

    Sankey 1/2 ton trailer.

Front of trailer has been modified to take a ball joint.

Complete front towing assembly could be rotated 180' degrees for parachute drops. Easier to slip under Land Rover to make space. ( Note the 4 bolts ) located at the end nearer the trailer body.

    John Mc Cargo

  12. Hi Wally, I think that must have been a prototype or trials vehicle, the production run had fixed front arches, large rear mudguards and a large equipment locker behind the cab. Most if not all the production trailers had three non folding ramps in place of the two ramp one shown.

See here for another view of the 30 ton Scammell that came to grief on a weak bridge: http://www.creopcrown.co.uk/Units/Others/RCT/rct.html

The Scammell was driven by drivers from the Royal Engineers .

  13. hi everone, i am looking for any information/pictures in service of my truck no 83 bl 06. which served with 51st royal engineers airfields, carrying plant used for building airstrips. here and in libya around the late 60s.was then completely rebuilt and stored, then caste in the 80s, then passed to manchester airport and then the gryphin trust. ive owned the truck for 11years now and would like to find out how it looked in service. any help would be gratefully recieved,

    Hi.

    I was based in Waterbeach with 63 ( Airfield ) Construction. Sqn. R.E. We had 2 x 30 ton Ex R.A.F. Scammells.

I sure that I have photograph of your Scammell. 51 Squadron was also based there, as was 53 Squadron.

There was a person in Ireland asking what was on the doors of the ex R.A.F. Scammells. They are crossed Arab Khanjar knives, just like you see in the movies. 63 Sqn was the Gulf Support Squadron,

I was also driver on Scammells in Germany. 83 BL 13 and 83 BL 18.

    I can be contacted by e-mail seanmccargo42@gmail.com

  14. Hi

I grew up around old planes and military Vehicles and have a consuming interest in such things My first wagon ride was an old RAF Matador at around 11 and first drive a 1/4 ton humber.

    Welcome Sean Mc Cargo

  15. Hi - thanks for letting me join your community.

I have always had a fascination for old technology - mainly electronic stuff although I have had 2 series II landrovers and have a garage full of other old mechanical bits and pieces.

    Thanks again

Hello from Sean Mc Cargo. Washington , Tyne and Wear.

10 minutes from North East Military museum.

  16. We need to see the photos John (or is it Sean?) your not allowed to tease us!! If you look back to post 580 on this thread you will see my old 30 ton artic, 83BL02 in IRR but I suspect most were DBG in service.

Seeing as you used to operate them, tell us about your experience with vibrating prop shafts and gearbox problems, we had a long debate about this some time ago.

    Mike

    Mike.

That is a promise. I also have photographs of a Scammel Grave Yard in Kuwait. They were all ex Kuwait Army and they had been dismantled.

Spent 7 years in Ukraine and Russia and have lots of photographs of Missile transporters and other equipment.

  17. Hi,

I came across this nice little trailer today and just wandered what it is? ..Its very complete and in fairly good condition.

It runs on 9.00 20 tyres which make it a fair size and height..

I am yet to make an offer but not really sure how much it is worth? The plan is to tow it behind a k9.

If I manage to get it then I may have a widetrack sankey going for reasonable monies...

    regards

    martin

Go for it. The trailer is a 1 ton GS Sankey

It will go perfect with your Austin K9.

I used this trailer in Germany and the Gulf.

  18. Not got my paperwork at the moment, but the blue RAF Constructors were repainted green when the RAF Airfield Construction units became Army Engineer Regiments.

Somewhere I have a list of the vehicles (and Crane float trailers) transferred - it is reasonable to assume that those vehicles not transferred were the ones either transferred to PSA department or sold off at this point, and so never received green paint.

PSA -- had two of the RAF SCAMMELS in Aden, they were transferred to 10 Field Sqn R.E. ( Airfields ) and the number of one of the Scammels 21 BT 40 the trailer was 20BT61, later both Scammels were shipped to Sharjar in the Gulf.

I have photographs of them been load on board ship.

  19. I was a Scammel driver at Waterbeach. 30 ton RAF draw bar trailers. Vehicle no. 20 BT 42

    Germany 30 ton Army artic. ------------ 83 BL 13 and 83 BL 18

Aden and the Gulf 30 ton RAF draw bar trailers. ------------ 20 BT 40

I have a lot of photographs for both U.K and the Gulf.

Lot of photographs 30 Ton Scammel in the river when wooden bridge collapsed in Thailand ! '' OP CROWN ''
