  1. assuming you do have a Chevy or Plymouth 4 door, lets say a 1941 Plymouth special deluxe, how can you tell if it was ever a military staff car?

My 1946 Cadillac Series 62 still has its Service Number stencilled under the hood and on service records on drivers door frame.

  2. The "government" has rejected the petition on the grounds and I quote " the government cannot change EU law ". They can ASK to opt out but are unlikely to do so as Cameron etc all seem determined to implement this latest madness from the all powerful EU. The above was taken straight from the governments own website so is likely to be the final word. As it stands our hobby is going to lose a large part of its attraction all in the vain belief that terrorists and armed maniacs will obey this law when they have ignored all the current ones. Bring on the referendum.

  3. The latest news regarding the EU knee jerk gun law on the "governments" own website is that and I quote " The government cannot change EU law ". This is in answer to the petition which they have REJECTED on the above grounds. They can ask to opt out but are unlikely to do so as Cameron etc seem to agree with the EU (as always). So guys and girls it looks pretty bleak for our hobby, I notice AT LAST that Milweb has posted details on their site, better late than never I suppose. I expect it will soon become law and millions of historically important items ( I will not call them weapons as they clearly are not ) will be lost or mutilated. Sad time for our hobby. I hated the EU before, now it's personal

  4. As I understand it, not until you sell or transfer them on.

How on earth they will know what's going on beggers belief as they have no idea who owns what in the deact world.

I think the early deacts will go underground and never be advertised for sale......else they will have to be welded shut.

    Unless someone knows better

The word is that there will be a period where people will have to register ALL deactivated weapons, after that anyone caught with one will be liable to fines and or imprisonment. This will turn some into something akin to art thieves where you can't show anyone and can't take them out of your room. Dealers must know something surely, their whole future depends on it. Would you like to be a dealer with huge stocks of old spec deacs that you paid big for, then having to have them welded solid and sold for a fraction of their worth. We are facing maybe the biggest change to our hobby in years yet NO ONE in the major groups such as the MVT etc seems slightly interested ! I imagine a greater police presence at shows IF this does happen and people having to show current spec certificates to satisfy the moronic establishment who believe tougher laws deter terrorists. You cannot legislate for terrorists or madmen they don't care about ANY law.

  5. Thanks for the advice chaps! I am pleased I asked the question....... I shall leave well alone!

Believe me you are doing the right thing :trustme: I view any contact with the DVLA as something to avoid if at all possible, since the local offices closed it has got much worse. Enjoy your Jeep :saluting:

  6. Let well alone!!!

This man knows what he's talking about he helped me with the registration of my Dodge WC. Leave it as it is, as I stated earlier you are opening a whole can of worms. The DVLA are not known for their rational thinking, I once nearly got a vintage tractor taken from me merely because in a previous life someone had put the engine number down as the frame number and the frame number down as the engines ! Despite sending countless letters, pictures and actual rubbings of the numbers it took six months until I finally found someone in the DVLA office with an IQ over five that realised the error  Every letter I sent took three weeks plus to get a reply and three lots of the pictures sent they denied ever receiving despite me sending them by recorded post. My advice is only deal with Swansea if you fancy spending the next six months of your life on the phone working your way through the entire DVLA workforce all of whom will deny ever having heard of you or your Jeep. It is one of those facts of life that Swansea was put there to drive scores of motorists to an early grave :-D

  7. I own a 1944 Willys Jeep. The V5 shows it as a Ford but its definitely a Willys! How easy is it to correct the information on the V5?

    Many thanks in advance

    Phil

This could either go very easily OR open a whole can of worms. I have changed an engine in a car in the past and changing the V5c was pretty straight forward however that has got much harder now I believe involving documentation and receipts for the replacement which if you have long scrapped the vehicle it came from but kept the engine may prove difficult. However changing an actual MAKE is something else entirely. It may be worth contacting the MVT who have local people who can inspect and verify vehicles. They will hold more sway with the DVLA than an owner. It pays to be wary as it may take you down a road you didn't care to travel. At the moment there are owners having real problems proving their vehicles are the ones they a purporting to be, it has been well reported in the Classic motoring press so get some sound advice BEFORE you do anything official.

  8. Having a huge deactivated gun collection im worried (my future pension) ive done a little research and the proposed wording for the ban is 'machine gun' not assult weapons this woul cover a lot of weapons from .30 cals, brens and vickers tonstens and other smg,s so please all sign up. the only people exempt would be museums

What makes a museum..............? could be a lot of new small ones opening

They are even threatening museum held firearms too, nothing is safe. I fear for your collection as I fear for mine. Sanity left the room years ago. Meanwhile in Cameron's "totally gun free environment" he will still have his 24/7 armed protection despite him assuring our safety because he took all those nasty guns away. This is totally utterly mad, there is increased handgun crime in the UK but there are NO handguns because it's against the law in the UK to own one ! Laws apply only to the law abiding NOT the lawless. Can someone not stop this bloody madness ? The EU is Nazi Germany all over again, they have taken over without a shot fired.

  9. Ok, just got my December issue of Windscreen through from the MVT, not a mention. Been a member of BASC for as long as I can remember and not heard a word about it from them! not even an email. Picked up a mates shooting times yesterday and guess what, not a mention!!!!!! Whats going on!!!!!!

To be honest it seems to be a done deal, many seem in denial and others couldn't give a rats ar5e UNTIL it happens when it's too late. It's like moaning about who won the election when you didn't vote. The MVT seem to have lost the plot compared to the old days and other big groups are also noticeable by their silence. We have been sold out basically.

  10. I agree, we need out of the EU, they messed it up in the first place and as usual, everyone except the UK will ignore this.

Anyone know if they can ban anything without offering compensation? If the British Government had to offer compensation for the handgun ban, why don't the EU?

The compensation offered to the handgun owners was minimal anyway Chris, how does £80 for two £1000 pistols sound ? I cannot be the only one who thinks this is unjust, totally misses the issue of ILEGALLY held, poorly deactivated and smuggled weapons and will have absolutely NO impact on either terrorism or armed robbery. Much the same as the handgun situation where the innocent were made to suffer while the handgun rate continues to climb in the UK year on year despite the governments blinkered view that by making ownership illegal all the bad guys will throw them in the canal and become choir boys !

  11. The latest thinking is that old spec stuff is ok in current owners hands but if or when it is sold it will be the owners duty to ensure it is deactivated to CURRENT spec BEFORE sale ie. welded solid, at the owners expense ! So you invest say £1500 in an old spec SLR then you fall on hard times and are forced to sell. You pay £80 to get it up to current spec and ruined so you can then sell it if you are lucky for £500 ! Easiest way to lose £1000 ever. My guess is they will ask all current owners to register their deacs on pain of say 5 years imprisonment if they are found with an unregistered deactivated weapon in their possession, much the same as current firearms laws. That way they will require you to notify change of ownership AND to comply with current spec law. This is all supposed to happen by March 2016 which is I would say impossible but it will happen eventually because the EU has failed to police other countries deacs so everyone suffers even the UK whose deactivation standards are among the best in the world. None of us live forever one day someone will need to sell these items and the "investment" factor is wiped out completely. Utter bloody madness.

  12. I have signed the petition but it is pointless. This is the responses MEPs: (my bolding)

Catherine Bearder Liberal Democrat MEP "..... the Commission has prepared a Regulation that sets out common, strict, harmonised criteria on how Member States must deactivate weapons so they are rendered unfit to use. This is complemented by the ban on the possession of Category A firearms – even when they are deactivated. The Implementing Regulation is based on the criteria for deactivation developed by the Permanent International Commission for the Proof of Small Arms (the CIP).

The Commission has been negotiating this Implementing Regulation with Member States since April 2015 in the context of the comitology procedure, with discussions intensifying in the last few weeks. The draft text sent to Member States on Friday 13 November was adopted in committee on 18 November, following which the College adopted the implementing act on the same day.

In summary, the proposed revision of the Firearms Directive will debated by European Parliament and Council for adoption, the Commission are hoping its plans will be approved and come into effect by July 2016. The Commission have not mentioned compensation, so I am unable to give you an answer on that."

In contrast I was rather amused therefore by the "honesty" of the UKIP response: "..... I therefore believe that we in UKIP will be opposing the new EU Firearms proposal. Sadly, however, I fear it will be approved anyway. There is nothing most MEPs like more than a nice piece of gesture politics in response to public concern – whether or not their gesture has any practical effect."

I have been amazed at the apathy displayed by groups and individuals over this. This will have a serious affect on vehicle values, shows, re-enacting, businesses etc. Yet people who no doubt still believe in the tooth fairy continue to ignore what is happening before their own eyes. Why aren't the big groups lobbying over this, why is the MVT not contacting members, what about the show organisers etc ? Vehicle owners prepare to see a huge drop in values and shows closing because people will NOT come to view rows of green vehicles with no kit to look at or battles played out with wooden guns in the arena.

  13. If a major militaria dealer is saying it I would think there may be some truth in it to be honest, although I just posted a heads up of this on a FB deactivated guns site and excuse the pun was shot down in flames saying, get this "it hasn't happened yet" ! Eh No it hasn't but it isn't March 2016 yet either ! We need to be vigilant because it will be too late to take it seriously AFTER it's happened. Some people still believe in the tooth fairy but I tend to think there is no smoke without fire. We are heading down a very dangerous road for our hobby and shooting in general.
