I have to admit that I have an absolute love of the Centurion. I love it's design and the fact that it evolved so much.

I can't quite say that I have loved working on it as much as Chieftain. Changing a fuel pump on the Meteor was frankly an exercise in pure muscle fatigue as getting the back nut on was nigh on impossible.

I still think that it is the best Tank.

I do have a soft spot for Chieftain as well. After working on it I think it was a great leap forward from Centurion, and I know that Mike Hayton really rates it. It's also so much easier to work on with the engine pack design.

100 years ago today saw the first use in anger of the Tank.

my question is what is in your opinion the best tracked vehicle and why?

please be aware that powder extinguishers will eat all metal that it touches. So if you are lucky enough to put the fire out whatever caught fire will be junk.

foam does the same, but much slower and you can wash it off.

CO2 is great but has a tendency to kill people as well as fires.

Shouldn't need a flywheel to run the engine. All the meteors I've seen are run just by themselves.

if you keep the standard ignition setup then the starting ignition circuit fires after TDC. The mag runs not that advanced any way.

Engine ran, but John White told me the gearbox was knackered, also the tracks are well past it. I don't think the hydraulics work on it either.

Both the airportables were restored by my fellow members of the Duxford Aviation Society's Military Vehicle Wing on behalf of the IWM. The second has just been finished and last time I saw it, it was in the conservation hanger waiting to be placed in the American Air Museum.

IWM has two airportable, not too sure what models they are.

One has gone to London, and the other is going in the American Air Museum at Duxford.

Neither are in working order.

Whilst working on the ARRV at Duxford we found that the main bearing in the Main Engine Generator had eaten itself. Easy job to repair, but the are other issues:

The drive shaft has two Metalastik bushes on it, I guess they are there to A) take any shocks out of the drive (like a Cush drive on a motorbike), and B) to shear in case the genny seizes.

as our genny did seize one bush was shredded, the other split, and the woodruff key sheared.

So does anyone know where I could get replacement Metalastik bushes from? 1.5" I/D, 3" O/D, 1.4" thick

Been a while, got quite a bit done and moved it 30 miles north.

Oh, i've stripped it down a bit more as well

Also quite a way through rubbing down the chassis, treating with jenolite, priming and painting

Chieftain ARRV will move a Conqueror, just.

Ours won't Lauren, at the moment what with both engines being in the workshop and the steering brakes in tiny pieces.

For anyone after seal kits or pistons for Chieftain steering brakes I have got Past Parts making us up some kits for the Duxford Aviation Society. They can make them for use with OM13.

There's something similar to that in the land warfare hall at Duxford. It's a little Italian jobbie with 4wd and 4 wheel steer. Looks roughly the same era as well.

IWM Duxford has 2 Conquerors

ARV has not run in ages, dunno what state it is in as it has been under tarp since I've been a member.

MBT is a runner, but has a sticky 3rd gear, and the aux genny doesn't work. Apart from that it's fine.

Does anyone know of a source of tech manuals / EMERS for the Chieftain ARRV?

Got one in reasonably small bits and whilst there I want to work through as many of the systems as possible as this will be the only time in 10 years she'll have both packs out.
