  2. The sad news is that Bill Millin, the famous piper with Lord Lovat's commandos on D-Day;has died, aged 88. God Bless him.

I met him many times when I organised shows at bletchley Park and he was always invited as a guest. Great character and will be missed, another peice of history passes on.

  3. Just finished the book by Rowland White, a brilliant read, not sure what I'm going to read now that will be as interesting.

vulcan 607 is parked at RAF Waddington with a plaque.

  4. Hi Brad,

I think the paint is a standard Nato colour and as such they should be available to you to have mixed up at you're local paint supplier.

Clive Elliott has written three good articles on the subject (covers markings as well).

I have used Marcus Glenns Nato green paint and it requires a very good stir (the same as any paint) but if you don't stir long enough it dries eventually as a semi gloss. Which is annoying, you only do that once!

I'll include the standard ebay item here as well (have not used plan to buy some).

Ref ebay link. I am using this supplier and it all seems good

  5. I posted an earlier thread on the subject and agreed with all that posted that it looked like the coil had well gone off its mortal coil so to speak. Well we changed the coil and to be on the safe side we changed it the condensor as well and checked the points. We set off back to our secret lair were she is stored and got no more than 400 yards when she died. Upon inspecting the coil was so hot you could have fried eggs on it! We have gone through several coils now just to be sure that it was not another duff one. We have checked the voltage in the circuit and it is charging the battery around the 13v mark so we know the regulator is fine. :nut:

What is wierd is that when we run her at high tick over the coil doesn't even get tepid!I am now at a loss as to what the hell it could be! Whoever gets the answer to this one I will drive over and buy them a beer of their choice as we are all at a bit of a loss.

are you fitting the correct voltage coil. If it for use with a ballast resister it will be a 9v coil and will overheat very quickly, a coil off most late 50s early 60s cars ie. mini 1100 ect will work but not escort viva ect these had a resister. Try an old spares dealer as they understand the problem. best of luck.

  6. I am renewing the fuel pipes on my CMP Chevrolet gun tractor. A lot of the unions have a brass olive on the copper pipe, rather than the flared end I am familiar with. I have some quarter inch copper pipe and some quarter inch olives, so I tried slipping the olive on the pipe, inserting the pipe into one end of connector and the tightening the other side of the connector which seems to crimp the olive firmly in place and make the union. My question is this - this seems so ludicrously simple why bother with flaring tube ends etc, or AM I MISSING SOMETHING HERE? (as you can tell I havent done this before!). I have added a picture of a trial union just in case I havent made myself clear.

    thanks

    Rick

perfec but do not do it with brake pipes they do need flaring

  7. What do Vass have in 1400 x 20, anything suitable for a Matador, that won't look too bad either?

plenty of 1400x20 part worn ring 01525 403255 and ask for peter in tyre dpt or better still call in and look for yourself, you may be suprised at what you see.

  8. I had one of these complete with 1750 gall tanker reg no 80yy75 1940. It had a large ceramic master switch on the engine cover opposite the starter cable. I owned it for about 15 years, it was in the film enigma. Last I heard of it Pete Gaine owned it. If I can be of any assistance with info let me know.

  9. While the head is off try to flush out the cyld block. Silt collects around the rear cyld liner you may be able to poke around inside the block with a piece of stiff wire. This can help with keeping the water flowing to the rear of the engine.

  10. Only fill the radiator so it just covers the fins. If you overfill the water gets pushed out and once flowing just seems to keep on emptying. The radiator cap do's not have a rubber seal but seals on the brass surface of the cap. My old QL and OXC threw its water out if I overfilled but was never a problem if I kept the water low. A thermostat in the system seemed to make it worse, I never had one fitted for this reason,

  11. I remember a Cent version in as new condition in a scrap yard at Abingdon Oxfordshire about 20 years ago, the yard owner also had several new engines he said it all came from the ranges near Southend and were used for lifting bomb cases
