The Muckleburgh pig looked like it had just left Army service after sitting in a yard for a very long time, it was all very original and well used looking, i didn't find out where it had come from, one of the lads who restores the museum vehicles came over briefly when i took the pictures, and said it was a horrible thing to drive, then again he had only took it around the yard, so cold running gear and brakes in an unknown state would have made it interesting!

That is one massive bottle of windscreen wash for small windows!

By the way, if you look at the bottom of the instrument panel, there is an extended bit with a toggle switch fitted, what is it? my Pig has this, i thought it was an add on, but the bracket has FV stamped on it....

Ive got to admit, seeing it in as used condition albeit it a bit faded was interesting, looks like it has just come back from a patrol in Belfast.

And of course the interior creature comforts!

Just got to love the way they slapped extra armour plate all over the bulkhead to beef it up!

Buy a Humber 1 Ton, or a Pig probably cheaper! same chassis and suspension design but bigger with a better carrying capacity, and you can sleep in it at a show, drive it across country without busting your spleen and wade in very deep water, with a bit of preparation, and they have the same length wheel base as a 109 Land Rover.

And while the Pigs, bodywork will rust, most of it is at least 6mm thick, so it could take a while!

Also the petrol consumption isnt that far away from the champs, and you don't need to MOT it as its over 3 Tons built before 1960 etc (Obviously you need to make very sure it is in Tip Top condition) and you can take all your mates to the pub in it!!

Does anybody have decent interior pictures for a MK1 APC, there are stacks of widgety bits, ive worked out what some of it is for, i.e. where the Fire extinguisher mounts (behind the commander seat), but what are the four threaded lugs for inside, next to each antenna mount? are they for an interconnect box system?

and down next to where the pipes from the pump air filter and fuel filter go through the floor is another block of metal which looks like something attached to......Aren't pigs great!

How & what rear benches look like would be good as well! ;-)

The Land Rover in the picture used to belong to me! it was an ex Gurkha Regiment Series 3 FFR.

The holder in the front is indeed for a Jerrycan, and if you try, it will not take a plastic water jerrycan because they are a slightly different shape/size, i know because i tried it.

If you look between the two rifle clips above the base there is a bracket going to a point, on top of that is a hinge, on this vehicle the metal arm that attaches to that is missing, also there is what looks like riveted plates that held a webbing strap in place to go around the can.

Prior to later Land Rovers having side lockers, i believe this was the solution to a regulation for all vehicles to have a spare fuel carrying capacity for self sufficiency and replenishing other vehicles, on the later landrovers the side panniers held fuel, until a later regulation ruled it out allowing only water to be carried in the sides. I remember making sure that the seals on the jerry cans were A1 before loading them up!

The placement of the Jerrycan also makes sense, the fuel tanks are under both front seats, requiring the removal of the seat bases to gain access to fill, the secure fitting of a serviceable jerrycan, not really adding any more risk than you already had, and im pretty certain if everything was going to get exciting, it would be easy enough to remove.

And as pointed out in the diagrams, radios were never carried in the front of the vehicle, they were always fixed to the racking in the rear and connected to the vehicles power supply, with the headset/PTT put through to the driver/passenger if required.

By the way, the right angle torch in the picture is a nasty American thing, but made a decent enough interior light!

Looks like a badly made Anderson shelter or similar made out of corrugated metal, with a flap, hinged at the top for a door... :dunno:

Always wanted to go and have a closer look at that, but at the time booby trapping points of interest was rife, so decided to give it a miss!

Good pictures though! the Migs look in a more parlous state than when i seen them!

I spent 4 months based in the UNPROFOR HQ in Tito's residence, the UN were losing control of the situation around that time, and it was getting quite hairy!

Done part of an S.F. exercise at West Freugh, started off at RAF Boscombe Down, then flew our LandRover & Trailers up to West Freugh, working on TCW with TACATC putting in temporary comms and helping with the MOSKIT, which was a temporary airfield lighting kit, mounted in a Sankey Comms type trailer, complete with VASI'S and runway lights etc.

As i remember it was very cold and wet, but our billet in the overnight crew accomodation in the control tower was great as opposed to some rough looking leaky hangars across the way!

Unfortunately (probably more like fortunately!), i didn't see a snowtrac while we were there, did have fun driving around with NVG's on the airfield, and flying up to the Oban area in a Lynx, hedgehopping in the dark to set up a temporary strip so a Hercules could drop off an SOV with some sinister characters to carry out a mission! :-)

Anybody remember Mini vans in use. I can recall seeing them painted black with Royal Navy on them.

I recorded it to DVD, so i will go through it and see if i can spot Registrations etc.

that picture in Britain at War, the comms kit looked like PYE Westminster or Cambridge, anyone know exactly which it was? I never thought the military used it.

 

Tony, i haven't seen the picture, (Or the magazine infact!) but the Police in the UK used alot of that kit during that era, is it fitted in an MP vehicle? probably more suited for that role, possibly working with other police agencies, rather than using Larkspur/FFW kit, i think that the channel spacing would give them difficulties when working inter-agency.

My dads amazed Aden is on the telly, he was there with 2nd BN Coldstream Guards, and reckons its the first time he has heard of the army in Aden on the TV in forty years!!

i wonder where on the airfield it was laid up, i went to the airfield on a number of occasions during the height of the fighting, when the sarajevo air bridge was in operation from Ancona in italy, and from the land side when i was with UNPROFOR.

The only aircraft i can recall seeing was a big Ilyushin 72 transport which had run off the runway and crashed, it was there for a long time, plus a number of Migs etc in battle damage state piled up on one side of the field, never got a chance to have a good look, if you stood still too long you drew sniper fire!!

Seen an article in the tabloids stating that truckers/farmers etc are not happy with the price of fuel (Go figure!) and are up for a strike.......very soon.

Done a bit of research on the web and they certainly seem to be going that way, so batton down the hatches!

Please don't fall foul of the moderator :whistle: and resist the temptation for a big political rant, or even a small whimper, because they dont like it up em!!

I like this hobby for the vehicles, technically they are very interesting, and where else can you get something that cost the taxpayer the price of a small country for nack all at an auction!

I like showing them and talking to the people who have restored/maintained their own particular vehicles, which to me isn't re-enactment at all.

I can see why people like to dress up to match the period the vehicle comes from, but having been in the forces im not particularly keen on it myself, and actively try to avoid people who carry Thompson SMG's and grenades as a hobby!

I prefer the manky jeans and jacket look, infact most of the circle of MV owners i mix with look more like refugees! :-D

Post War.....You should of got a Sankey! cheaper as well!!
