  1. Thanks for the replys guys. The Smock had a bit of mildew smell, and what looked to be several spots on the inside, so I had to do something. I ended up putting it in the washing machine usig cold water, and very little soap, then let it air dry. There is still a little bit of smell, but I think letting it air out outside this weekend in the wind will clear up any remaing smell. I've never heard of Nikwax...can I buy this in the States?
  2. I have an original SAS Smock, and on the left sleeve, there used to be several patches. The top patch was Para Wings, and the bottom looks like it was the rank of Sgt. The one that has me puzzled is the very small rectangular patch that was between the two others. What went here? Its small enough to be a blood type patch, but I have no idea if the British used these or not. The Smock in question is real Gabradine, and looks to be from the mid to late 1990s. I'll put some pics up later...its really interesting with an added pocket for a compass on the front.
  3. When its issued, you do what you need to keep the NCOs off your back, when you pay good coin for it, its wise to take proper care. So then...a good regular washing and hang dry?
  4. Well, I finally got my 68 pattern smock today, and I forgot how well these are made! The one I have is NOS, and has a bit of a musty smell, so it needs cleaning. Whats the best way to do this to prevent damage or shrinking? I was thinking of a gentle machine wash, and letting it hang to dry. Is there a better way?
  5. Years ago, I'm pretty sure there was an American import company selling these, but they had been dyed black. Pretty cool, I never knew the Brits issued these.
  6. As soon as I get my smock, I'll post some good pics here. Thanks for the info guys!
  7. One of the reasons I asked this question is I found what looks to be a real SAS smock. The problem is that its from the late 90s, but still produced of Gaberdine, and I would have thought manufacturers would have exhausted their stock by this time. It sure does look correct though. Who were the major manufacturers of SAS smocks in England?
  8. Yep, and I'm doing my homework.:-D The ammo pouches on the 58 look a little too deep to use with the SLR. How did squaddies get around this issue?
  9. Thanks. So if you were issued an SLR, it was Pattern 58 kit only then?
  10. Were these sets issued for the SLR early on, and if so, what was the basic kit set up? Pics would help if you have some.
  11. Are the Gabardine smocks superior to the Mk2 Artic Smock with regards to the material? From what I've been reading up on, Gabardine seems to be the preferred fabric compared with the newer materials some smocks are made from.
  12. I was referring to the condition of wear. My smock is NOS, I'm hoping the hood is in good condition as far as wear. My basic concern was is it correct period. Now to find a vest liner...
  13. Hopefully it will match my smock. From what I can tell, its a mid 70s model.
  14. Thank you! I thought it was, but its always better to check.
  15. I've located a Pattern 68 Smock in size 9, and I think I might have found a hood for it, but want to check first. The DPM looks to be of the older type, and although I don't have a picture of the label, it reads: Hood, Cold Weather (Combat DPM) CG 8415-99-132-2049 Size 2 Remploy Limited CT48/448 Here it is: Uploaded with ImageShack.us Would this be the correct hood for my smock?
  16. Would that liner have been worn with the Artic Pattern Smock, or the regular pattern 68 smock?
  17. Yep...artic kit for the SLR. I already have a sling and short buttstock, but the stock is missing the side sling swivel.
  18. Thanks! I just found a Hythe sight for it, so I'm going to have to disassemble the rear sight to get it on, then re-zero. The rear sight of the SLR can be a real pain in the butt to take apart! A little off topic, but whats the general feelings about the stuff from SASS? I really like the smock so far, but have not really field tested it.
  19. Thanks Gents! I'll be keeping an eye out for both those items now, but its going to hard since I live in the States.
  20. Sadly, no, but a good friend of mine does. Check out the pics I posted in the weapons section of my SLR.
  21. I'm from Ohio near Cleveland, and although I'd like to get at least one vehicle, I have none for now. I "might" get an Iltis at some point though. My primary focus in collecting is small arms...Garands, M1 Carbines, Mausers, and the FAL rifle to include the British SLR. Edit to add: I never did learn to like coffee, but instead prefer Earl Grey Tea from Twinings.
  22. A little out of my price range! I'm having a hard time locating MOD Artic Kit for the SLR as it is.
  23. Thanks! For some reason, I thought a vest type of deal was used for these smocks. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for a good one to get for the collection. I used to have a 68 pattern in size 7 that I got off a buddy in Germany in the mid eightys, but I sold it long ago.
