  1. It is a long time ago when I did a clutch on a Eagar Beaver, but I recall they have a paddle type clutch plate, to put up with the frequent clutch use and abuse. These do not have a ring lining, but four pads each side of a ceramic material.

That is interesting - I guessed that it would have been a RL clutch.

There are a couple of parts on the hydraulics that I am not sure about - do you think you may remember or even know about the bits if I describe them?

  2. Welcome Big Ray

Among all your impressive collection, I see you have the old Royal Enfield 350. I was so impressed to take my test on a 350 when civvies could only ride 250's. Did mine in Recklinhausen circa '76/77. The WO2 followed me in his Escort and laughed himself silly when I got the knobbles stuck in the tramlines going under a bridge but did not put my foot down or get squashed by the tram so passed. He was still laughing when we got back to the depot:mad:

Do you know anyone who is still knowledgeable on Eager Beaver hydraulics by any chance?

  3. I have seen the Ministry dipping in most unexpected places. Even in a motorway service station car-park when I was passing through to collect my EB. I don't blame them as the temptation must be great with these prices and it is their job.

I am quite happy to put in some white if I am going to drive to a show. But as it will not carry goods for hire or reward I am expecting to use it on red the rest of the time.

I am interested to see what the MVT suggests as those guys have loads more experience on this stuff.

(Anyone who drives an Iron fairy at or beyond 12mph will be very sea-sick anyway.:red:)

  4. You know the ratchet handbrake on a Sarasen, I think it was. It snapped when stationary on a hill at some lights in Germany. As the occupants of the car in front jumped out and fled, it was just like free-wheeling into a snow drift:wow: couldn't stop it. Can not remember whether the footbrake had failed too but I think it happened slowly-ish without us relising.

  5. hello to you all,ive got a eager beaver that i saved from the scrap yard, the amount it cost me to get it up and running is a abit painful,we all like a challenge! i am missing a bonnet, front panel and a radiator, does anyone have any of these they would like to sell or have any leads?

Hi, I do not at this time know of any bits but will keep an ear open. You have the rest done now I guess. How is it going?

  6. The one in Dorset never got any bids. When you look at the pic, not only were the front light mounts missing, so were the back ones as were the battery mounts. Jump start only. It looked extreamly sad and neglected. £2k was way out of line for that condition.

  7. Wow - that is deep. Thank you. It seems a very gray area. Depends on the individual's mood that one picks at the local DVLA office by the sound of it. If they are sympathatic or knowledgeable towards the historic side or not.

I am presuming that at shows and rallies, machines that are dipped and found to be running on red - that will be fine if you tell the Ministry it arrived on trailer. Unless they are sitting there waiting for one to arrive at the start.

  8. I think you are correct on the special vehicles class now. I do not know if that is the same cost as PLG. It is begining to look as though the machine was in fact built in 1970. I just have to wait and see if MVT concure with my findings.

Seems a shame not to be able to use it to earn it's living or at least to cover it's costs though:nut:. Would not want to jepodise thr free taxation classification if I can get it though.

It will not be a chargable job though when I build this piece of kit on it. Getting the main sections of steel today. It will take several months to get anywhere - trial & error.

  9. Could people tell me the following please:-

What road classification for the purposes of taxation are people's Eager Beavers.

If newer than 01.01.1973 is your's classed as:

    a) a forklift - costing how much?

    b) a tractor - costing nothing?

    c) a special vehicle - costing £?

    d) p.l.g. - costing ?

    e) something else costing?
