  1. Hi

     

    Where are you located ? The chap that had my current SUMB project before me took off the hoops and cut them up but hadn't got round to taking them to the scrap yard - I actually kept some of the pieces as a template so I can get new ones made if none turn up by the time I need them - I hope to get the basic mechanics done by the end of the summer and have arranged undercover storage where l can do the electrics over the winter so I have until the spring to find some hoops ..

    I am afraid it is now mostly down to cannibalism as I think RR services cleared much of their larger stock when they moved - I keep an eye on e-Bay for bits to progress my restoration when one is being broken within travelling distance - I probably dont have anything you need spare but I have 2 sets of sides - you are welcome to the less good ones if you need them.

     

    On the other hand I am still after a set of hoops to hold up the tilt - in the worst case you are welcome to measure up my tilt as a pattern

  3. Thanks for the link ! I note that it is listed as a 12V GS vehicle - I guess that the single-rear-seat variant had a pair of signals batteries in the box under the side table for the 24V RT353 radio - I wonder if it could be charged by the vehicle - if so it must have had a voltage converter I guess ? I have put a wooden ammo box with couple of 40AH batteries in the back of 35LK88 as reserve power for the radios but that has to be charged at home.

    Yes it is - passed its MoT a couple of weeks ago with two advisories and just been to Ashford and back for a week - I've almost finished the radio installation (as a GS with clip-in RT352 and RT320) now - as yet running off their own batteries but otherwise functional

     

    How is the lightweight progressing ?

We stayed as exhibitors this year from Wednesday til Saturday - mostly a good day except for Friday night when we found how threadbare our 12x12 canvas was - thankfully help from our neighbours to rig a tarpaulin avoided disaster - but I had some time to examine vehicles and my daughter indulged her 1940s vintage fashion habit and had her first flight in the helicopter which she loved

     

    I was surprised not to see as much radio gear as I remember from previous years ? I never found the M0VOG amateur radio station (which used to be near the animal pens / petting zoo at hop farm) either - were they in Kitchener's field where we never got round to going ? Last year they were near the trade stands but I couldn't see the masts this time.

    I had similar issues with a sagging tilt and water pools on my SUMB - I used hardwood battens lengthwise attached to the hoops at about 6 inch spacing to support the tilt and avoid collecting rainwater, if that is an alternative in your situation ?

  7. Well actually spotted yesterday but it was late ...

     

    On our way home from W&P we followed a convoy of 2 landrovers with trailers and a Bedford MK or MJ North from the A12/A14 junction at Copdock west on the A12 and north on the A140 until we turned from home near Mendlesham. I wonder if we have fellow enthusiasts locally ?

    It is a 150Hz tone squelch system (CTCSS) - a locally generated 160Hz tone is also injected to the receiver (unless in rebroadcast mode) so strong signals without 150Hz tone are supposed to be modulated locally and also open the squelch. EMER F582 says that the squelch sensitivity pot is 9R2 in squelch module 9 but the 160Hz injection level will also affect the end result for signals lacking 150/160Hz CTCSS.

     

    The 160Hz source is part of transmit audio assembly 13 - the EMER shows frequency and level adjust pots but the partial circuit diagram in the EMER does not give their numbers. The layout diagram shows it as R9 OSC LEVEL on module 13. The output is module 13 pin 6 if you want to check the level and frequency with a scope.

     

    I have noticed similar interworking issues with amateur 6M and 4M FM transceivers to the point that one of my 351s cannot hear a 1W station a few yards away in L or W mode but can in * mode over miles and I suspect the 160Hz injection is either turned down or there is a switching issue that disables it as if in rebroadcast mode.

     

    Out of curiosity is the problem set a 351 or 351M? - I am fairly sure the one I noticed this problem with was a 351M which has modified audio circuitry for a BID300 speech scrambler requiring wider audio bandwidth (I measured below 200Hz to above 8KHz rather than the usual 300Hz-3KHz) - if so it may be deliberate to stop the 160Hz injection interfering with the BID

  9. Dear All

     

    Being rather rural and wanting to have a plan B for the fridge, central heating pump and Internet during extended power cuts due to high winds etc. I wanted to buy a generator. I have arranged for my electrician to provide for a generator supply to those circuits and ended up paying for the last one of these:

    On arrival I found it to be in a fitted wooden crate, labelled as being refurbished by ABRO Colchester and provided with its service history book and a big red warning label saying that the engine has been preserved and "contains no engine oil - do not turn". A quick check finds the dip stick to be bone dry so exactly as advertised. Is it as simple as adding the appropriate oil, connecting the fuel supply and pulling the starter cord ? Or are there other de-preservation steps I need to take to avoid expensive repairs ?

     

    Any advice much appreciated
