  1. Hi Guys,

Following the success of Wartime in the Vale over the last three years, the South Midlands area of the MVT are pleased to announce this show has now been awarded National Show status by the Military Vehicle Trust for 2012. The venue with its central location and unique WW2 camp with its many nissen huts has grown in popularity with over 350 military wartime and post war vehicles attending in 2011.

Now with National status / support, there will be an even greater selection of vehicles and re-enactors with a mix of military and civilian displays. For 2012 we are also hoping to attract more amphibious vehicles as its not often that these vehicles can go and have a play in the water, as we are fortunate to have access to a slipway into the River Avon in Evesham just 1.5 miles away.

We are also pleased the Austin Champ Owners Club have selected this show for their Champ Camp, as 2012 is particularly special for them as they are celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Champ and nearly 100 Champs are already booked in with vehicles from the UK and abroad.

There will be a large selection of traders, Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (applied for), children’s fair, cinema, entertainment in the marquee and various vehicles displays going on in the arena and the camp will be fully opened with all its displays and extensive range of air raid shelters, along with lots of visitors in period dress contributing to the atmosphere.

For more information please visit the events page on: www.ashdowncamp.webs.com

Forms for MVT members will be posted out in January with Greensheet Magazine.

    Non MVT members very welcome.

Do please contact me if any queries.

    Thanks Paul

Last 2 years have attended with family and jeep, camping Fri through to Sun. This year the jeep was sick so we could only attend today, peed off that it wasn't a full weekend but we were not disappointed at all. As ever excellent organisation and layout with some great vehicles and the Champs (don't tell them) were a sight to behold as they took to the ring.

    Heres to 2013!!!

as you can see, ask a question and get a multitude of answers which can seem to contradict and confuse your original question.

The fact is there are sometimes a number of ways of doing a job or several answers to a problem, some better than others, some more expensive, some more time consuming and some dependant on conditions of use. None give you a definitive answer and I'm afraid it can be an elusive beast to track down so I suggest you take on board all the comments you get from questions asked on forums such as this perhaps ask the same question of one of the many vintage forums on the web and compare the answers in other words see if there is a consensus, read the manual or advert blurb (in the case of a product) then apply some common sense.

Never be afraid to ask the question in the first place... and then have a go.....it's the only way to gain experience.

I think you are spot on. I don't think there is anything wrong with a bit of lively debate; from this thread and resulting research etc I have learnt a bit more, quite important as I am a newcomer not only to this site but MV's in general.

Hopefully got the oil sorted just need to go and get gaskets etc and wait for the engine to return.

    Many thanks

  3. Thanks for the support guys & look forward to seeing you.

All the entertainment has been booked, Kitten von Mew will dancing again + its her 30th birthday party so might be a long line of blokes wanting to give her a birthday kiss, Fiona Harrison singing & 40's DJ Woody to carry on into the night.

Toilets booked & this year we are aiming to get some showers there.

And the cinema will be running again.

I will be on the MVT stand at Stoneleigh giving out forms if you want to pop by & say hello. If I'm not there it cos I've gone to see a few traders.

    Paul

Just a quick line or two to let you know I have booked in for this coming weekend (Green 127 Hotchkiss jeep) but as we speak there is no engine in and no likely hood of it being fixed in time so will not be coming down with a vehicle .... the boss said we will still come though as day visitors.

We have attended the last two years and would not want to miss what is a fantastic show!

  4. It's a semi synthetic oil, and damm good stuff! I'm running my Dodge WC51 on it. Much better at holding the pressure up after a long run.

    Tony

Will have a look at that one, thanks for the info.

Whilst the jeep is layed up I have taken time to give everthing a good look over, greasing etc. I need to top up both axles and gearbox/transmission. Rather than starting a new thread off what oils would you suggest for these two components?

    Cheers

  5. Was that because you found the copper washer, or because you found yourself in Halfords ????

    Ray

Going off at a tangent; how was the Normandy trip? Hope you had a great time over there wish could have gone myself but with work etc .................. I did get to the last meeting; bored some people with the pictures of the loose valve (lots of sucking of teeth) had a cup of tea and a guided tour of the yard with all the stored goodies!!!

Back to thread though, as you may have guessed I have cracked on with the issues surrounding the jeep engine; engine removed and off to the engineers (Contact Engine Services Brierley Hill) just waiting for their assessment what needs to be done.

Taking it out was the easy bit, I want to make sure everything is as it should be when re assembled:undecided:

  6. Yes it should be copper but some times you'll find that has been replaced with a fibre washer don't put any gasket sealant on that it also should be fitted dry.

    Pete

    Pete

The remains are of a fibre washer, chance would have it an ebay search has thrown up some copper NOS gaskets in America (set of 10)

  7. Blue hylomar in moderation is OK, but decent gaskets on decent components need little or nothing of anything.

I personally am not a silicone fan (not even on Baywatch) but some folk use it happily. I would be wary as enthusiastic use can lead to lumps of the stuff going where you dont want it. Going back to the decent gasket and decent component comment there is nowhere for even a thin bead of silicone to go except into where you dont want it. I recently spent an expensive (for the owner) few hours digging silicone out of a Bedford engine.

Especially dont use silicone on the head gasket (which I presume is a new one?), and hylomar isnt the best either. Use Wellseal on that.

If you dont have a head gasket then I have a new one one hanging on my wall (a long story that I won't bore you with!)

    Paul

Will be using JEEPARTS for any replacement bits (25 mins up road from me), I have a new head gasket already. Having a look will need a manifold to block and down pipe to manifold gaskets and I presume there is a gasket on the oil drain nut that needs replacing as there seems to be the remains of one wrapped around the threads of the plug.

    Cheers

  8. Having looked through the site and not being able to find an answer I would like to ask anyone's thoughts on which oil to run in a Hotchkiss engine.

Currently the engine to my jeep has been removed for some work to be done; on refit I would probably be using Morris Golden Film SAE 20W/50 classic motor oil, if there any thoughts on that.

    Cheers

  9. Hi all

Just a quick line to ask advice or opinions in relation to the refitting of an engine into a Hotchkiss jeep.

The engine has been taken out for valve work and everything bar the distributor was stripped off. I would especially like to know if any gaskets need replacing as a matter of course regardless of condition and what if any selants need to be used as the TM9-803 I have refers a couple of times to replacing gaskets and 'cemeting' into place.

    Many thanks.

  10. Very important tip. When you come to reinsert the valve collets stuff a rag in each of the holes alongside the valve guides to stop a collet dissapearing down the hole and into the sump, John.

    John

    Many thanks

  11. Ray

Will do, I have seen the new accomodation and it looks fantastic.

Any hints or tips on the easiest way or anything to watch out for when I remove the valve and sleeves? Does the valve need to be open or closed.

    Many thanks

  12. He should join the North Staffs Area, that would do it!!!!

    Ray

Must admit I did come to a meeting about 18 months ago, what with one thing and another just kept missing them so thought it would be a bit cheeky coming back and asking for help, I will try to attend ASAP ...... honest, when I came everyone was fantastic; very welcoming and freindly.

With the jeep have finally managed to get a compression test done today (after 2 hours sleep coming off a night shift) shows front 3 cylinders all 100 rear one 0.

Cylinder head taken off and the rear valve and guide need work on them. Have stripped down the block down as far as removing the valve from here on in need some help hopefully in the form of the bosses uncle ................

  13. Have you sorted this Hotchkiss out yet ?

    Commander

Nope not as of yet still waiting to source pressure test kit from my brother, not a lot of time this week to look at it either, should have some time over the weekend to have a look...............I hope.

  14. Check the distributor cap for cracks, or black lines, might be arcing between the two plug leads, I assume you've checked the points gap? if its closed up could cause a misfire

    Nick

Had a good look at the cap, all contact points rotor arm etc and can not find any burning or any other evidence of arcing, there are slight scratch marks to the contact points but nothing excessive.

Have not checked the gap; with that I will have to admit I am not the best skilled mechanic, how etc would you do that?
