Halftrack and Jeep on lorry heading south on the A303 this lunchtime, early arrival for A+E??

Jeff, dad (Dick Fryer) is only in this film briefly but he always talks fondly of the "days in Exeter" and how you all used the vehicles that are cherished now as toys
We are still plugging away at our Pioneer but will get there one day
It is because of the efforts of you guys from those days that so many vehilces have made it into preservation

The rods you describe are definetly to retain the gun planks as Antarmike expains, the gun planks are approx 12 inches wide by 4 deep. we have about six of these rods on our Pioneer and from memory they are slightly different in length to relate to the cross members. All cross members on the body have corresponding holes.

Ace1, your restoration is inspiring and i well remember when we bought 6 new 1400/20 for ours glad we did it over 10 years ago though prices have more than doubled since. i would be really interested in the engine side cover as i dont have either side for ou SV2S, please let me know if you are willing to part with it. keep the pictures coming

The weights that were on Ebay were unbelievably in our home town unknown to us, we bid but they did sell for way more than we were prepared to pay and went to Scotland i believe! Early weights are solid iron but later ones are filled with concrete.
-
Plantters, We have two original weights with our Pioneer, you are more than welcome to measure (but we are in Somerset) alternatively I could post the measurements for you?!

I hold a subscription to CMV but agree that the standard of content seems to vary widely, although I lean towards wartime equipment I appreciate the mix they have but feel that some copies are way off, this months being a prime example. I also never understand why a three page spread of a newly restored vehicle never has "before or as found" pictures included. The Before and After of W&T's was my quartely favourite!

it was my understanding that wartime period 6lw's would have been Gardner grey when new which is very similar to Ferguson grey??

When we were trying to master gear changes on our Pioneer we spoke to a veteran who said that his bench mark was that he could roll a cigarette between gear changes!!

I think for originality the FUF 47 which is ex - Jeff Theobald must rank highly, over a relativley short time he owned and moved on close to a dozen taking parts from each to add to FUF.

Where are geographically? we have a Mat and bought a rough cab a few years back which may give you some assistance in teh reconstaruction, there are doors as well but they too as in need of work!!! we are based in Somerset

Jeff Theobald was indeed the owner/restorer of FUF47, and over the period of its restoration had many more. It is probably one of the most original Pioneers on the circuit and Jeff supplied us with a few hard to find items including the 3 foot hub spanner when we bought ours. Jeff and my father have known each other since the 60's when Jeff had a yard in Exeter where he had countless rare vehicles including Kubel, Schwimmer etc, he also saved the unique Humber Hexonaut from a saw mill not 2 miles from my offices, we also have a cine film of Jeff, Dad and friends in the Exeter yard recieving a GMC CCKW on suspended tow behind a Mack No that was operated by the local garage!!

In Somerset? are any of them available as spares donors? we could use screens etc for our restoration of our 42 MAT, and are based in Yeovil Somerset.

Madrat,
What you have is an SV2S, the SV1S was produced in small numbers and the majority were converted to 2S spec on rebuild. Your vehicle looks quite original with the exception of the rear locker work, there are a few hard to find items on the vehicle including windscreen, engine sides and original seat frames.
Is she a runner? we (brother, father and I) are currently doing a ground up on a 42 SV2S and are going to have to give the engine more attention than we would have liked as it has low oil pressure when hot. I think for us the frustration when we started was that the rust just wouldnt go, so the decison to strip, blast and paint everything was taken.
Looking forward to seeing progress

Not sure about Sexiest, but for British Good Looks it has to be a Scammell Pioneer SV2S Breakdown surely

I live approx 25 mins from Taunton, the vehicle you saw is a Leyland Martian Recovery
it is in appalling condition, the cab is on the verge of collapse.
It is owned by a small commercial vehicle yard of the same location.

I along with my father who has been collecting vehicles for 35 yrs + and brother have a small collection of WW2 vehicles in South Somerset. Our collection consists of 1 x 1942 Willy's MB which has been the subject of a nut and bolt restoration, a 1942 Scammell Pioneer SV2S currently under going full restoration, and a 1942 AEC Matador a future project. We share our storage facility with a CMP and another MB.
This site is an invaluable resource for anyone with even the smallest interest in Military Vehicles and the diversity already displayed on its pages is incredible.
Keep up the good work everyone !!

I too have had my eye on this Matador for some 10 years or more, the owners are Powells of Sherborne, we too can give it a good home with our Matador and Scammell Pioneer in Yeovil. Although we have pursued it on many occasions the owner is always slow in responding. I have heard that the timber yard is to be let again forcing him to make a decision soon, hopefully. May the best (or crazy) man win.
Cheers
