  1. After having just about wrecked a Lightweight by leaving it lying at my backside for five years plus (including a bit of arson), principally due to being unable to actually drive the thing legally.....

I have a. some spare cash and b. impending legal driving ability.

I want to buy a new toy.

10k absolute top whack (would need to be nice to induce me to spend that much) drivable on standard licence and UK road legal, apart from that anything goes.

    Discuss.

  2. I don't actually agree with it, or at least with the methodology.

Those men rightly or wrongly were found guilty by a legitimate court. If any are to be pardoned than it must be on a case-by-case basis and based upon the statutes/KRs of the time. Not upon some revisionist view of what is "right" by modern standards.

  3. There's no way I can express myself on this issue without coming over as plain insulting, which I don't intend to do.

Suffice to say I feel the entire re-enactment hobby takes itself too seriously in many respects, while comfortably ignoring some inconvenient facts.

Sadly, in recent years the Walter Mitty element have come to outnumber those with a genuine interest in history and it's portrayal to the public. To the point at which the latter are actually ridiculed by the former as being "not dedicated" or "authentic" enough.

  4. Well, it's military, it's a vehicle of sorts and after today it's all too historic, unfortunately.

The Canberra was designed in 1944 and was the RAFs first operational jet powered bomber. The capacious fuselage lent itself to conversion and Canberras served throughout the Cold War in a variety of interesting and often dangerous roles.

The last three remaining aircraft, designated PR9 and equipped for photo recce. Were officially retired today. As part of 39Sqn's standown all three aircraft took part in a UK tour, visiting those locations which were significant in the aircraft's history.

As Short Brothers of Belfast built, modified and maintain Canberras, their factory at Belfast's George Best City Airport merited a visit from one of the tourers.

I flew in a TT17 variant as a cadet and remember skiving off school to see Canberras arrive at Shorts for maintainance (someone on the staff would always "leak")

    I'll miss 'em.

  5. Actually that pub at the enterance did a good BBQ last year.

To be honest though with "her ladyship" not present this year I'll be inclined towards tinned curry and super noodles from Waitrose and save the difference in cost for important things like...em...beer.

  6. We thought that the "powers that be" had gotten a bit better a grip on things last year, several times I observed people being told to wind their necks (and ropes) in, actually got asked to move my genny at one point. In previous years we had a few problems, once with a large group of Dutch/Germans who built up right round us!

She Who Must Be Obeyed sorted that one and I have to admit I'd probably have needed a few "stiffeners" before approaching them... Salty looking characters

Her nibs is somewhat ferocious though, especially if anything interferes with sleep or her ability to drive...

  7. I'm going to have some fun this year with flying/train arrival, will stock up in Paddock Wood on the way and do the usual camping "one pot wonders". Usually have the BBQ and gas range but with no car this year will be restricted to the wonder that is Trangia.

Have a mate arriving Friday/Saturday - he's flying in too but we'll probably extend to somewhere outside for a "sit-down meal" somewhere... I like The Bluebell (I think that's what it's called).

  8. Those plans are well worth a few quid, the guy that sells them operates an unofficial (as in he'll help if he can) support service and seems genuinely keen to see the reults.

I bought a set and got a friend to start work on the .30 for me. He has a pro shop so he can do things right. Unfortunately he got a letter from Her Majesty requesting his urgent attention to matters in places hot and sandy very shortly afterwards. :-P

Hoping to actually see the gat by Christmas. (2007)

  9. I'm something of a "silly" photographer at MV shows.

Several hundred photos over a weekend would not be unusual, over the course of Beltring week I can touch 1000 if I try

This'll be the first year that I'll be using a digital SLR and a thought has occurred...

    Beltring = Dust!

    Any suggestions?

  10. Anyone going have 240vAC?

Normally have genset with me but no vehicle this year and a very dodgy laptop battery. (Need it for work and photo downloading!). Would require a maybe a couple of 20 min. sessions.... Cash/Beer offered.

  11. I like that too though.

And if one takes the word "Classic" to mean a creation of the highest excellence then modern vehicles may/may not be entirely on topic.

As long as it's not about the RB44 :-D
