  1. I bought a set of elbows for my son's GMC from LWD parts last year. They are identical to the ones you have bought and although I haven't tried them for fit yet I would imagine they are not correct. The reason being that I'm pretty sure they are ex French Army. I have bought a number of ex French Army parts for my Dodge in the past (not knowingly) and without fail they have been of poor quality and fit. These dealers don't distinguish between US and French manufacture and just list the parts as being NOS.........buyer beware!

  2. Good advice Arcot! Always, always go and see a vehicle before buying. I've bought vehicles the length and breadth of the UK, in the US and in Europe and the first and only time I've been ripped off was when I paid for a car in Scotland without seeing it....never again!!

     

    As a long distance buyer you have to put a huge amount of faith in the seller so go and see the vehicle, ask for all the documentation for the vehicle and do some checks on the seller and his bank if he'll give you his IBAN/BIC details. It's amazing what you can find online! If everything checks out then comes the hard part, paying for the vehicle! I've never found a way of making instant payments overseas (apart from PayPal but their exchange rates and fees are horrendous) so the idea of making payment once the vehicle is on the transporter isn't feasible, cash isn't really an option as a transport company wouldn't want to take the responsibility, there's a limit on the amount of currency you can take out of the country and a lot of sellers don't want cash anyway, so the only way I've found of doing it is by bank transfer which usually takes 3 days.........3 worrying days :D .

  3. There's no vat or import duty to pay as it's a used vehicle sold privately within the EU. All you need to do is get a Government Gateway account when you get the vehicle home, go to the HMRC website and find the NOVA online filing page (it's a bit hard to find but it is there) and fill in the relevant details. You'll get an automated letter the same day confirming that there'll be no VAT to pay which you print off and submit to the DVLA when you come to register the vehicle.

  4. Out of interest do any of you dread driving your MVs on the basis that something is likely to go wrong and for the same reason you delay taking them for a test run, when you know they need to be taken out every now and then.

     

    That's what breakdown insurance is for (although I've never had to use it)! I broke down in my Dodge bringing it home from storage the night before I left for Normandy. I managed to get home and sort the problem the next day before setting off to catch the ferry from Hull. I drove between 120 and 200 miles a day and got to Normandy in 3 days, spent a week there and drove home via Ypres......1400 miles in total, without any problems whatsoever, mainly on B roads (D roads in France) and one of the best experiences I've ever had. I've always had total faith in my vehicles and would drive them anywhere :laugh:

    The supply of Dodges in Norway has dried up so Kjell may not be trading now. My WC51 came from Norway in 2009 and was, I think, one of the last to come out of the country. The ex Norwegian Army Dodges are the best examples out there so I would recommend you find one of them if possible.

     

    As for prices, I think 13000 Euros would buy you a good Dodge here in the UK........17000 sounds quite high!

  6. Didn't expect to update this so quickly but I've just had a call from a very helpful lady at SoF and I have to pack up the poles for collection by Parcelforce on Monday and a credit will be issued on receipt. Good to see reason prevailing and glad this could be resolved amicably.

  7. I've just had a very interesting conversation with 'customer services' at Soldier of Fortune. I bought some stuff off them, including some wooden tent poles for my US small wall tent, prior to going to Normandy. Unfortunately I was so stressed in the run up to leaving that I didn't check the tent poles and guess what? Pitching my tent in a field just outside Bayeux I discovered that the ridge pole was 6 inches too long!!!! I had to use duct tape to join the two halfs of the pole side by side.

     

    Back home this morning I rang up SoF to explain my predicament. The conversation went something like this....Me - "My ridge pole is too long, unfortunately I had to use the poles as I had no other choice"…. SoF - "We can't take them back if they've been used, what good are used tent poles to us?"…. Me - "But they don't fit an original tent and you market your small wall tent as an authentic reproduction"…. SoF - "You're tent must have shrunk, we've sold loads of poles without any problems!"…. Me - "By six inches, I don't think so"…. SoF - "Just cut them down and use a hand plane to plane down the shank to fit the aluminium ferrule"…. Me - " I work in the kitchen trade and you couldn't do that by hand, they need to be turned down on a lathe"…. SoF - "Well we're not taking them back"…. Me - "OK well I paid with a Visa debit card so I'll write to my bank to initiate a chargeback and send the poles back to you"…. SoF (now starting to lose his rag) - "You do that, we'll never deal with you again, you're obviously a b*****d!!!!" ……….and hung up!!

     

    I've had run ins with customer services before (British Gas comes to mind) but I've never been sworn at before!

    Yes, that's my local! The truck hasn't been out so far this year but I'm busy prepping it to take to Normandy at the end of the month.

  9. I keep seeing a Dodge WC (I think) driving past my house every few weeks. Ive tried to flag it down to chat but to no avail! Its in Newcastle towards the airport Woolsington way. (Mods, if this is in the wrong section please move it!)

     

    Hmm! Could be me. I've got a Dodge WC51, live just beside Callerton and keep the Dodge at a farm other side of Ponteland. I don't know of any other Dodges around here but there again, I haven't had the truck out since last year!

  10. IAm sure the inspector acted in good faith when he dated the vehicle. He would also take a lead of the owner as regards the date of manufacture. If the vehicle was in your ownership then perhaps you should have done the research first and discussed this at the time of inspection.

    I cannot comment on the actual detail of this verification as I was not verification officer then.

     

    The vehicle wasn't in my ownership at the time of inspection. I bought it from a seller who'd imported a large number of Dodges and so didn't question the quoted date of manufacture. It's no big deal though as I'm not bothered whether it's a '42 or a '44. I set out to buy a WC51 and that's what I got :-)

  11. I am sure the MVT only went on the evidence provided at the time of the inspection. They do not have definitive lists of build dates.

    You will need a dating cetificate from a relevant club to register the vehicle.

    The DVLA will not accept anything else for first registration.

    They may accept other evidence to amend a date on the V5

    Dont forget you will have to follow the NOVA process before you try to register it.

     

    It was registered 5 years ago as a 1942, based on a letter provided by the MVT. I appreciate that the MVT covers a huge range of vehicles and don't have lists of definitive build dates, but as a novice and first time MV owner I was able to ascertain that the vehicle was a late '43/early '44 just by visiting the Dodge forum. It took all of 5 minutes to find this out using the serial number.

  12. I've got a photocopy of some sections of TM11-2725 (courtesy of Ken Pugh). I've only got the sections relevant to my Dodge (1944 WC51 6v) but they show two positions for the antenna base dependant on which radio set is used. The SCR-610 used an MP-48 or 48A base mounted on the front left of the cargo box and the SCR-694 used an MP-65 base mounted on the back right of the cargo box. Becker and Dentzer's Dodge book shows these locations and also the antenna base location for the SCR-508/510/528 and the SCR-608/628 (12 v) which is on the left rear cargo box. The front right cargo box is also shown as a location for the antenna base when using the SCR-193 12v radio set. So it would look like both your positions could be correct depending on which radio set was used! Whether vehicles were equipped with two different radio sets and two different locations for the antenna base at the same time, I don't know!

  13. The only way is to send cash dollars, they don't accept UK cheques and there's no such thing as an international money order any more. You can send it signed for and tracked but chances are it won't be signed for and it'll cost you £9 to send £16. Not worth the expense IMO. Just send the cash and put it in a card in an envelope.

    I had exactly the same experience as you. My order arrived promptly but when my credit card statement arrived another £50 had been added to what I'd been expecting to pay. I rang up to query and was told that it was VAT.........no mention of that when I placed the order or on the website......not acceptable and I certainly won't deal with him again.
