  1. Yes - dead right - Its a heavy bleeder !

Suspect a nice plastic beer crate could be used to increase the height.

If you lift up the gearbox to the height that Jim has make sure that the ground underneath is solid concrete and not tarmac. The higher the lift the more unsafe it becomes with a heavy load.

  2. Yes - Well spotted .. I should have added that in to the explanation. I had to take several "Bites" at it :-)

I take it that as the unit is lifted up that you must have stopped at different stages to use supports underneath or across the hatches to allow you to shorten the lift chain as it is long in the first lift and missing in the final photo ?
  3. That small fabrication was an add on from the previous owner - It has now been added off !

Yes that my Dad, AKA Foreman , Safety Rep, Time and Motion expert and doom sayer.

Actually he is a great guy, ex REME and was very interested! (And he never receives anything but Tea...)

    Oi!

  4. I am not sure of the exact weight of the gearbox , but I was able to remove lift mine with a basic engine crane , it just had enough height to remove the gearbox completely from the ferret.

It is probably easy for you to take the gearbox right out of the vehicle and then you will have plenty of room to work.

Thanks to all especially to you Andy. Before making such heavy work needed to be sure you do.

Other questions: What is the weight of the gearbox? and especially what amount of SAE10 need?

  5. My Mk 1 Ferret has had at least two baskets fitted in the past - if you look ate th pics you will see where they attached them. The more recent one is obvious because they have left the lugs in place - the earlier one had mountings which were on the rear , and much closer to the centreline of the vehicle.

    Hope this helps. :)

No not for the furry kind but can anyone help. I want to put a basket on my mark 1/2 to carry more stuff.

Can anyone suggest who or where I can get one. I have seen them around but haven't found anybody who can get me one! thanks

Thanks for the offer to put it on the website - it should sell quite quickly via ebay , but if it does not hit a decent figure will put it on yours .

    Cheers

If I still had the turret I'd be interested sold it a few years ago. Answer to that really is no thwack it on epay most Ferret things seem to go well at the moment:cheesy:

If you want me to place the pictures on the for sale page on my website can do. Its not up at the moment won't take more than five mins to do if that

Same goes for anyone else with Ferret bits to sell must provide an email address

  7. Yes , keep us informed how you get on - also what sort of shape the accumulators are in if you strip them. Accumulators are on my tick list so any shared knowledge is of interest.

    Hi All,

I want to charge the accumulators (piston type x3) on my Saracen, instead of a charging bottle and because I don't want to rely on getting bottles charged, I've bought a bought an air gun charging stirrup pump (3000psi capability). It has a microbore hose with a 1/8 bsp female coupling. The fitting on the end of the accumulator appears to be a schrader valve (can anybody confirm this?). So effectively I'm looking for a 1/8 bsp male to female schader valve adaptor. Has anyone come across one or know of a workshop set up to make one?

Alternatively, what equipment/methods (without spending hundreds of pounds) do you use to charge the accumulators????

(P.S. I recognise that the use of nitrogen is best practice)

    Thanks in anticipation

  8. The guy that sent me the pics was in the SAf and said he heard of a Saladin being attacked by machine guns and RPG's it returned with every optic smashed.

    Quote;-

Lovely! What a Superb Looking vehilce the Saladin is. I wish I could afford one these days!

I can do you a nice 1/24th scale one fairly soon:cool2::cool2: Handy size, cheap to run & got all the detail the real thing's got:D

  9. There was a really nice scratchbuilt Stalwart at a model show recently - video on you tube - fully amphibious , about 2 feet long.

I used to Own a Saladin myself a few years back. Chopped it in for a scorpion, But I miss owning it! I would be VERY interested in a LARGE scale saladin. One that could be modified for radio control. Say 1/6th Scale, would you be able to do that?.........:nut:
  10. There is a person on ebay selling numerous parts for british fighting vehicles, based in Poole, Dorset.

does anyone know how I can contact this person as I want to buy some Saladin parts off him? I have sent 2 messages via ebay and there is no response? :-)

    Jim

  11. Hi Jim,

yes I did. spent a lot of time on the bearings and trying to unseize the existing turret brake handle (for want of a better word), but gave up on the gun mount and got a NOS GPMG mount from bannisters...and as that is what is was fitted with rather than a browning it was probably closer to in-service anyhow.

Unfortunately I have not sold it on, after many months of pressure to get something more practical :(

I am thinking some time in the future to get either a saracen or Pig... :)

For now, I have a 101 which is proving to be some fun, and at least its dry when I drive to work :)

    Mick

Thats a shame you sold it .
