  1. I know I'm being a bit thick here (my brain doesn't work in the cold) but I'm after a matching Sankey trailer to pull behind me 1981 series 3 lightweight landrover. Does it have to be narrow track or would a wide track be historically accurate ?

    Many thanks

  2. got my calendar very happy then dropped it in the sink full of water

whilst the calendar gives a pleasant 5 minutes looking at 12 pictures, once I have done that, I have no use for it, put it straight in the recycling and regard it as an expensive(?) waste of time and money producing it

    Every problem has a solution...

  3. I have no problem with legroom in my lightweight... as I only have short legs!

However, my girlfriend's son (who has been Landie mad since he could talk) is only 15 but is 6' 1" already and has massive feet (size 12), we may have problems shoehorning him into the lightweight when he's 17 and raring to get out on the roads!

  4. having worked at the Royal Artillery museum in woolwich I can tell you that they were all sold to Austria, where the chassis were stored and the turrets mounted on platforms in the mountains for self defence.

The AUstrian authorities have been kind enough to totally refurbish 1 unit and present it to the museum and it currently resides in the cold war gallery (currently closed) where it is in Gulf 1 colours.

sorry but I cant find a photo at the moment from own own collection

  5. Dougy it was definitely FV439 in two formats:

Carrier, Personnel, Fulll Tracked, SAS/SMC FV439 Ptarmigan -Asset Code 0736-3000

Carrier, Installation, Ptarmigan/Triffid FV439 Radio Relay Access (Tracked) - no Asset Code quoted

I am not quoting this from some military author, these are the deisgnations used in Army Code No.12123 Part IV 1999

    Ptarmigan replaced Bruin.

Bruin came into service in 1967.

    Ptarmigan design began in 1973.

Prototype Ptarmigan was introduced in 1978

In 1980 the contract was awarded to Plessey to introduce the system over a 4 year period.

    Officially entered service in 1985.

In 1987 contracts were awarded for the second phase of the system.

Triffid was the UHF radio relay (RR) link within the Ptarmigan system & contracts were awarded in 1987.

Given the complexities of the system, it was not going to all fit in a FV439. This would explain the different types, for the RR side or the line use & switching. I have to say I am rather overwhelmed by the complexities & versatlity of the system!

Erm, so what are the ones that Withams are selling ?

Cark was a wartime fighter aerodrome, opening in 1941. Once the threat of invasion had receded, it was used for Flying Training Command, and as a staff Pilot Training Unit. What we know today as the RAF Mountain Rescue came here in 1944 from around the corner at RAF Millom, seeking out those aircraft which had crashed on the lakeland fells. The M.R.U started life in 1942, moving when flying training ceased.

Cark closed when WWII ended in 1945, but re-opened in later years for private use. One runway is still in use by the North west parachute center.
