I think I would go along with willyslancs that it is an old lamp post there should be a set of trunnions near where the thick ring should be if it were a cannon and the decoration may make it victorian.

with nothing to judge the scale of the item, ecept the closeness of the wheels and no coupling system , is this possibly a handcar that used to be pushed around the site from building to building, or for moving shells in the foundry.

I agree pic 4 is a V12 but pic 3 is a flat head straight 4. I garee the ranger equipment and the air cooled flat 4 VW is it from a FH70?

yes Richard you're quite right although only 2500 show the arsenal itself, but I have managed to add some to a few entires such as Chruchill, 432,432 which also show 431 protoype Martian hippo foxes this one and trains. I havent found one for ferrets, but there is a large selection of gawd whats that I would like answers on, so I will have to start a section for that

Thanks Ted for claryfying the point I was trying to make that BMC/Rrover supplied the red arrows pilots with transport, mind you some of thier cars could have been donkeys.

Pedant Away I am not a train specialist nor any kind of expert just a retired bank official who stumbled on the most amazing collection of images that nobody knew about , and even the Society committee have no real idea of whats available to view, be differentif it was all images of them.

Tony B you are making me use images I didn't think would appear on an MV site, even thought Woolwich had done all the quality assurance for armaments and vehicles for over 100 years with subsidiaries at Chertsey and Farborough (hants).

The original gas Factory was to the west of the prison along the west bank of the old Royal military canal (see Broadwater on current maps), where Whitehead perfected the straight running topedo.This was also deomolished c1952 photos attd.

A friend of mine Ian Bull has produced a copy of the 1932 map of the site showing all the rail lines as this was the height of the 18" gauge development.BUt without his permission I cannot show it. The first London railway ran from Spa road Bermondsey down to Abbey wood via Lewisham and even her Majesty Queen Vicoria took a train to plumstead which was reversed in to the Hole in the wall gate under Plumstead bridge and chugged through the site until she reached the T Pier to take a boat to the south of france. She had originally opened the pier in 1857 when the troops returned from the crimea and had been there to greet some. MOst of the narrow gauge was of cast steel plate type (Like scalextrix sections)and was just laid on concrete slabs.Ripped up over the yearsbut mainly when Thamesmead was started 40 years ago. a section of standard gauge remains behind B19 by the large loading doors.

richard they are all taken within woolwich and remain in their photo sequence numbering system. There are shots taken off site when testing including 432 at chertsey and north wales, chieftains on and to ranges and all taken by the woolwich team.

Gawd is it 3 years ago that the invasion happened, I was there for it, dammed good weekend. Any chance of a repeat next year as it looks like there wont be a MV event next year, due to Mike Buckley's departure from the scene earlier this year.

I actually had the museums sandy Chevvy quad and limber waiting for the guys to arrive as they had lost one of theirs suddenly, you can just see the top of it on the firing photo, and I can confirm that the 4.2" mortar was returned to its display slot. I also managed to video the news item and lent the tape to the garrison guys, Still waiting for it back.

If you come down now and look to B10 ( clock and black tin roof) from accademy, the clock cupola has gone, knocked down by a crane, but due to be replaced. The black tin has been totally removed so only the original 1726 walls remain within which have now been built 2 5 story blocks of flats in battleship Gray, Bloody Awful.

Museum currently looking for 60 volunteers to keep it running so if anone fairly local is interested contact jennyb@firepower.org.uk and put your name forward, perhaps then we can get a refurbishment centre for the guns and vehicles set up like duxford
