  1. Yep great little machines. And they will have played their part in WW2 by helping to produce much needed food on 1000s of small holdings. I still use my MG5 with a trailer to pull logs out of the wooded area of my garden.
  2. Did this thread inspire this artistic creation? Looks great but I don't fancy the operators chances.
  3. Hi Clive, please see attached plate on the generator. I managed to pick up a machete, not yet the part you gave me but it certainly looks the part and even has 1/3 paint same green/blue as the engine. It is marked part KE8277 1952 Martindale made in England. I will keep a look out for the part you gave me but this fits nice for now. Image attached. If you are still attending Caldicot Castle i would like to meet and pickup some of the parts. I'll PM you my wish list(: Many thanks Kevin
  4. Hi, pleased to report that generator is now charging. Clive you were correct to suspect the control panel. After testing the generator and all cable continuities, decided to remove the generator panel to have a better look. Stripped and made sure everything that should move did and on stripping the regulators noticed that the points which i thought i had cleaned are actual sanded to a nice white oxidised finish and not to the metal. Cleaned and reassembled, it now works and charges. I'd taken Clive's advise and purchased the more detailed engineering manual and so was able to better check various elements however I believe it was the the regulator points that were the main issue.
  5. Thanks Clive, the tip and detail on the brushes will help if it comes to that. Will let you know how i get on.
  6. Ok Clive, nothings urgent at the moment. That was a typo, brushes for the generator. And i do need a better jack. Perhaps you could let me know which will be the first show your at. Regards Kevin
  7. Yes to the oil can please and also the seat covers. I might need those bushes as well if your willing to part with them, I'd have them as spares either way if that is ok. Did you have the generator panel as well or only the 2 speed type. Private message me price and payment details Clive and I'll send address. I might tackle the lockers but keen to see what else might need work once I've driven it, sure to be a few things. I was hoping the door lock might indicate something to do with it's service. Best Regards Kevin
  8. I'll try that Clive. Might have to be next week end. Malvern Militaria tomorrow. Are you able to comment on a couple of unrelated questions. what goes in the holder on the driver side. What should the original machete look like, i have a vintage one but unsure if correct and last have you seen this door lock before, fitted to the driver's door, very robust and still works.
  9. Hi Clive, I'm getting 16 ohms. By energising do you mean current across the field winding? And would it need to be 24v or would 12v do? Thanks
  10. Yes my fault Clive, i read the manual and assumed the 2 speed was standard. I'll try that test method thank you. Plenty still to learn..
  11. Ok Clive thanks, not so bad maybe and makes sense as it all seems to fit well and it is painted original colours. It might be outputting 12v, i would not have picked that up the way i was testing but the charge warning light is on so maybe not. Should be possible to rebuild if it's not working. Looks easier to get off! Thanks Kevin
  12. What do you think Clive, have i got this wrong? Have you seen this before. Thanks Kevin
  13. Yes that part went well Clive. Not sure the generator is going so well. Started to look at it today and it doesn't seem to have the correct unit fitted. Not sure what it is but no oil feed, no caps to unscrew and no oil filler bolt. I don't think it has a gearbox either; smaller unit. Pic of the offending item attached. I think I'll have to remove it to see what it is and what else has been changed. Regards Kevin
  14. Hi Clive. It's listed as body type special purpose and number of seats 8. I did send a lot of information for them and an apology letter if i had over done it. Also sent photos to show it's condition. Plus MVT verification letter.
  15. Good news today, after only 3 weeks, DVLA have accepted my application to road register the Humber. A bit of work to do checking everything is as it should be and not forgetting sorting the generator. Very happy..
  16. Thanks as always Clive. The spinning of the generator is a good tip and thanks also for the possible generator panel. I have to admit I thought changing the generator would be easy, clearly not the case however one of my best friends was REME for 24 years so if i leave a trail of full beer bottles up to the generator I should be sorted(:
  17. Thanks Bob, that might be good if its not working. I'm not getting excited about the thought of rebuilding the one I have. I'll be checking everything this week end and might come back to you for a price and detail on which model you have, I believe there are 3 so need to check all is compatible. Many thanks.
  18. Thanks Clive. I do have a hand book but it does not go into enough detail about what to expect from a working generator. Thanks for detail on that, I can start fault finding now as it clearly is not doing what it should volt wise. Stethoscope on the gear box first to see if it is doing what you describe. Regards Kevin.
  19. Thanks Clive, a man of many talents 'Morse code' (: I was aware of the oil top up requirement and so have been starting the truck weekly but I fear the previous owner probably did not bother; I know that not long before I bought it, it spent at least 12 months sitting out in the open untouched. I will get onto checking those covers and micro switches, seems a good place to start. would I expect to hear a noisy gearbox if there is a problem or will it have jammed? Or possibly both depending on the stage of failure! Thanks as always. Kevin
  20. Hi Clive, nice to hear from you and hope you are well. I'm lost on the radio comments, another interest? I have just double checked the charge warning light as it's always been started during the day. It is coming on but very dule. I get 24v testing at idle and also at 2000rpm which doesn't seem right but i am not sure what the 2 speed means! Should i be getting a lift in voltage at idle or when driving along which I've not been able to test. Regards Kevin
  21. Hi I purchased a Humber pig last year and after some good advice and some hard work it is ready to go for its first drive. It has never been road registered so presuming it has not been driven for prolonged periods since being sold off in 1970. It came to me in fairly good shape and I've completed all of the mechanical work and checks I believe it needed. The MVT inspected it in January and were happy and after completing a V55/5 I am now waiting on the kind lovely people at the DVLA (they might read this) to send me a V5. Only thing I am unsure about is the 2 speed generator which is not charging the batteries very well or at all whilst idling. Could anyone advise how best to check the Rolls Royce B6 engine 2 speed generator. Is it working/how it should be working/should it charge at idle? And very welcome would be any tips and mechanical things to watch out for when taking a pig on the road for the first time in many years. ERM is 13BK56. Thanks Kevin
  22. Hi Andy Yes certainly anyone with a MK1 should be snapping these up, i'm surprised they didn't sell immediately. If your cover is still in the plastic i would open it and dry it out. Colin at BB may have washed them. The two i had were still slightly damp, mould was starting to grow but cleaned off easy. Its amazing how quickly the appearance of these trucks can change, my truck has been resprayed twice in 5 years probably because it wasn't dry stored at some point. I am hoping to get it road registered next few months so i can take it out and see if it really is as good as it looks; i have a feeling there will be a few road going issues. Only planning very local shows that i can hopefully drive to. Yours no doubt has a solid base to build from (i did see pics of yours painted black when i was looking for pig info) and a bit of paint can do wonders, i think our biggest challenge might be keeping them driving and road worthy. All the best with it.. they are certainly worth the time and effort. Regards Kevin
  23. Thank you for that Andy. Clive very kindly gave me the details of someone with a few mk1 canvas covers, i have already picked two up; not sure these will ever appear again. They are old new stock, look great on the vehicle, image attached after fitting. The gent on ebay (BB Engineering) is the same seller, i think digging them out for me prompted him to list the rest. They are great quality, i even love the staining from long term storage; antique dealers call it patina. Thanks again for the thought.
