Fuel in the oil fixed-carb problem.
4” .375 ar500 antenna replacement rounds arrived. Going to chamfer the ends and smooth it out.
Paint day. Most of The internal removable pieces are done with the first coat. Hammerite smooth white goes on easy and looks good and is durable. For the outside it’s getting the same, just blue.

Lots of progress today! Exterior is 40% done.
Engine is up and running after @m35ben threw on the tweaked carb. Doesn’t appear to be dumping gas in the oil.
Now need to:
Re arch springs
Change gearbox/drop box oil
New tires
Finish inside/exterior put back together PAAAINT
New seals
Redo interior seats
New periscopes and Vision Blocks
Build air filter assemblyThe list is endless. But the good thing is it’s more or less running and driving
Slowly cracking away
Another day
Exterior is 99% done. Some spots to touch up but it’s basically there. The drivers hatch and turret hatch are off.
Next week I will tackle the rock guards, touch ups, air filter setup, also, take one wheel off, take it to the rim guy, see about getting a non split rim tire.
Or maybe take the week off, I don’t know. My wife asks “what are you doing all day on the shop?”. It’s hard to explain mechanical things and the process of what I’m doing so I just say I’m playing with the tanks
In case you were wondering why it was so loud
Paint day /images/smilies/icon_smile.gif
My
MethodTurned out a little brighter than I anticipated, but will be fine.
Some were a little darker, some much darker.
More progress.
More progress tonight. I didn’t finish the radiator covers because there are some additional spots I need to touch up.
Bunch of completed interior pieces
You can see the high quality of my paintmanship /images/smilies/smiley_abused.gif
I promised folks I would spend the evening working and put the brdm back together and do a lot more work on the Roland.
Didn’t happen.
I did spend a bunch of time and remove old nasty rust and paint from the hull of the Roland. I felt it was too wet to paint right now.
Snapped four bolts getting this thing off. Water seeped into the threads and it was rusted and corroded badly. Time for penetrating oil and if that doesn’t work more helicoils /images/smilies/smiley_nosmile.gif
Cleaned up underneath and all inside the individual grill vents
Spent some time on the hull
If I spend about one night a week and 4-5 hours I can have this all done in a couple months.
I’m going to have to hammer the periscopes out. That’s what’s keeping me from finishing the outside right now.
Goal: Have a totally 100% turn key ride with no rust.
I'll get there eventually.
Cleaning up some missed spots.
These were exposed to water and had some flash rust but a wire wheel and some drillin' and it's cleaned and suitable for painting.
Which it got.
This is the engine air intake cover.
This is the engine bay cover.
Turret hatch interior-painted, but I need to get a foam pad for it. When it hits your head it hurts.
Researching seals since I need 6 replacements-rear hatch, rear troop overhead, side doors, turret, and drivers station.
The periscopes normally have a latching mechanism but they were stolen off this vehicle. It also has a lot of rust and corrosion locking the periscopes in. I’ve been using penetrating oil to loosen it but no luck so far.
My angle grinder decided to give up the ghost and slowly started spinning slower and slower. It couldn’t handle the thick glass and plastic of the periscope.
Troop compartment overhead door seal fitting
Turret hatch seal measurement
Turret and drivers hatch are dimensionally similar seal wise. So I can order 2 rubber pieces and it will fit both.
More work
Everything is going to be white so it’s easier to find stuff in the dark.
Going to start on the mid cabin in the morning when I get back.
I figure if I Do 2 hours a day I’ll be a bit closer to the goal of February.
It wasn’t a ballsy cold day so work got done
Fuel pump and alternator reinstalled, just needing hose clamps
Floor boards and passenger seats cleaned up
Towards the rear of the vehicle
One day I’ll pull the fuel tank to clean it and redo it but not today.
Yes our leaf springs are bad-another thing to work on.
You can see the oil filter access cover here
These only last 2-3 hours

Agreed - it's a common issue with periscopes on FV430s. If they're badly stuck you may need to destroy them to get them out.
Andy
Destroy how? Grind them off?

Looks like they were held in with clamps using the 2 holes on either side. If you’ve got new ones anyway try a pry bar between the scope and the shroud. They won’t be a press fit because they will be replaceable in the field.
I’m guessing the clamps were removed and they’re just held in by corrosion?

I have some very nasty periscopes on the Roland which are yellowing/cracked and not visible through. I have replacement sets, but for the life of me I can't get the broken ones off. I can't find any bolts or screws that hold them in and my best guess is they are press fit in and somehow water/nastyness got in and rusted them completely stuck. Any ideas on how to free them?

Fuel in the oil is probably from an engine mounted fuel pump with an internal leak (diaphragm ?) if it has one.
David
It’s got an electrical fuel pump right now. Going to concert back to a mechanical one

Retired from the Greek army/police. 1975 year of manufacture. Chrysler 318 engine, np435 transmission, Dana 70 axles, np205 transfer case, pretty simple vehicle.
Unloading off the truck was nerve wracking but went simple as can be. Reverse, stay level for about 10 feet then see nothing but sky.
Took it for a spin, runs and drives good. Stops too. Shifts smoothly, sounds like it’s running well.
Tires are cracked all over so no real heavy driving.
Job for the upcoming weeks (when I actually get free time!) is to change all the fluids, sand and paint the lower interior Rockers.
More work in the last 2 days has been done. On Sunday m35ben came over and the oil was changed. Trying to figure out why there is gas in the oil.
Begun wire wheeling the hull floors to prepare for painting.

About an hour with the angle grinder to get these rusted nuts off the back floor so it can be cleaned for painting. Both were totally corroded and stuck.
Floor is ready for painting. Using hammerite smooth white.
A good shop vac makes everything better!
No AC but it does have a vent fan
Also a former radio antenna hole to get
Welded upSpent a few hours Sunday and Monday night/Tuesday morning in the shop having some “me” time working.
Rust. Unacceptable.
Better, ground down and ready for painting
My intent was to have the entire inside done and ready for painting next week but I couldn’t. I got a lot done but I still have a lot to do. I’m about half done with the front driver well and it wasn’t as bad as I thought. Mostly just thick grime. Very little pitting.
These parts are ready to be painted. I just need the time
Not good
Much better!
Been spending an hour or two in the shop after I get off work and working on the interior.
The front hull was absolutely disgusting with a half inch to inch of What I think was just grime mixed with grease and paint and rust.
After 2 hours of cleaning
After 3 hours of cleaning
Since I am a shade tree mechanic I used my
350$ surefire lawman light as a mechanic light. Totally worksShowing some perspective of what I’m working with.
Getting the exterior ready for painting
I’ll be back tomorrow with hopefully the front hull floor totally clean
Cleaned up the turret a bit today
This will be getting repainted too.
Things that are wrong:
Tach-no workGas in the oil
leaf Springs flat
Shocks likely need to be replaced
Dirty/Rusty inside, needs paint
Exterior needs paint
Thoroughly clean inside
Carb clean-see pics
Mechanical fuel pump, not electrical
Clean fuel tank-rusty
New Periscopes/vision blocks
New seats
Pressure wash engine bay, remove grime
New tires
Install intercom-Soviet style?? Radios??
Seems to diesel when turned off
It does run and drive. Delivered July 19th.

I understand a few folks got scammed by him? What ever happened?
he was on the steel soldiers forum under that name with a listed address of Jarocin, Poland. I have been searching for more brdm2 parts sources and came across “fourtankmen.com”.
listed address?

Hydraulic hoses can delaminate internally, preventing a return of fluid from the callipers or slave cylinders. That would jam the brakes on.
It's a fairly common problem with old brake hoses.
Possible. It’s only the back right brake.

Purchased (New) from International Repot Depot in 2016, delivered in 2017.Getting cleaned!
Interior. After 4 years of bouncing in and out it was in need of a good blast
After, much cleaner !All done!
I have a title and tags being sent to me from Vermont. I went the Dirt Legal way since our local DMV was shut down due to the COVID stuff going on. It was pricey but I wanted to have it running sooner, not later.
This is my second BRDM. My first one was bought from Indiana and sold to a gentleman here (Nutt68) who then sold it to another guy who is bringing it back to Texas.
Mine is more or less how they come off the factory floor. It's in immaculate condition. There's a bunch of little things that need to be fixed from the vehicle sitting for so long. Bulbs, lights, indicators, seals, etc. But the primary things we are fixing soon before the road test are:
Tires-I have 4 new tires here that need to be put on.
Brakes-test.
Trans-change oil.
Turn signals and brake lights-replace bulbs/change to LED
Engine-change oil again.Minor stuff-
Wire brush/ prime paint rear cargo
Complete PKT kit and shoot
DRIVEI normally start and run it 2 times a month. It always starts fairly quickly.
A rather disappointing day working on the BRDM.Hooked up the PKT solenoid and the firing circuit works. Just need to finish the gun.
I changed the transmission oil. It was very low and nasty. Flushed it with 2 gallons of extra 90w I had then poured in 8ish liters of ep90.
The PTO is the fill hole for the entire trans.
Shifts much smoother now and the synchros are actually functioning well and it hits second gear without any problems! Ya.
While driving it with Ben it started making weird noises.
PTO was spinning the winch. Not sure if it’s supposed to spin. F.
Then it died. I know it’s not broken, it’s a Good running vehicle. It’s probably out of gas.
10 gallons of USA’s finest Dino juice dumped in the tank and it fires right up. Ben noticed it’s leaking coolant all over the battery and right side of the engine bay.
F.
So we power it back to the stall and change the front right tire with a new one and contemplate the meaning of 40 year old rubber failing.
We were able to hit the road today. It drew quite the crowd. Unfortunately, had issues.
Brake seized shut
Carb is surging.
Hydraulic fluid blew outIt runs and drives like a DREAM. It’s quick. Well, until the hydro blew and the brake seized shut and the carb started surging.
Minor issues to fix.
Armor draws a crowd.
after 9 years I was able to hit the road in my brdm2 to say I’m pumped is an understatement.
the next work day is 11-21.

A couple more pics of Fox on the ranges at Warcop.
Am I alone in believing that Fox was retired prematurely?
Whilst admitting that it had its share of mechanical problems; was top heavy and had limited off road capability due to its four wheel configuration; it was also fast, quiet, well-armed; relatively well protected against small arms fire: highly manoeuvrable; easily transported and deployed, etc, etc.
I can't see where a vehicle like Jackal wins over Fox. Surely in a theatre of low intensity ops, like Afghanistan, Fox would have been ideal suited?
not enough machine guns, not light enough. Won’t go where the jackal will go and not as quickly air portable.fast, either. Remember the tendency of the foxes to flip. Jackals are a lot more stable.

Does the French army sell off Panhard VBLs? I have a seller here who says they ET theirs refurbished from the French Army

Texas_pete has one for his brdm2. Im
trying to track down one of these kits. It’s an adaptor you clip to the exhaust which creates pressure and heat for a water hose to decontaminate people/vehicles/objects with.
Any idea what they are called or where to get them?
-
Have the possibility of picking up a pair or more of the twin Diesel engines from the m4a2 along with some transmissions and other parts. Can I share the pics and get an idea of what I have on hand?
thanks

My trip was a success y’all. Went to IWM duxford, Paris, sandringham, burleigh House, poppies fish and chips down town, the London eye, and had a blast downtown and in Paris.
I wasn’t able to make war and peace this year but I will do my best to make it next year!
-
I’m coming from 105 degree weather, this will be an improvement!
-
Looks good! I have a bunch of army trained mechanics here for the humvee if you have a question.
-
Sorry for the lack of replies mates, been busy with army work. Flying out on the 22nd. Hitting up Paris, London, and bovington.
I have a lady friend who will be occupying most if not all of my time so I’ll be busy.
Bollocks, guess I gotta come back another time ya wankers!
-
Looking good! Any updates?
-
No, they are still in front line use all over by Russia, Korea, Ukraine, and a couple others with Ukraine in an active war. Maybe one day

My master cylinder is leaking..how hard to rebuild? Are the components commonly available?

Bin it and put an electric one on.
Did you actually break it, or just have a leaky diaphragm?
Its not pumping fuel period. I’m thinking an en electric would be best now too.
Quick question: are you using gl-4 or gl-5 spec’d 90w oil for the diffs/Trans?
-
All spot on. I am used to a bike with a light clutch. 16k pounds is heavy
-
Ordered. 40$ fuel pump, 40$ shipping to America

Where are the reputable sellers? Mine went out

Will be flying back to the UK with my lovely wife in July for about 10 days to see her family, go to the Royal Military Tattoo, and see some friends.
Anyone have any local parts guys for Soviet stuff?
Will be around Lincolnshire.
