  1. Hi,

Had a play with the jib winch, which seems ok, just some grease here and there, i had some tips from the Ian the previous owner, very helpful, sounds like the drum sticks, so a little nudge with a bar needed.

i hate these dark wet evenings, having to wait until the weekend to fiddle, in the process of refitting the living van, i bought a crash damaged caravan and now in the process of fitting it all in. i could do with being retired or have a few months paid holiday to get all the jobs done.

hows your engine install going, pretty major work...

I would rather fit a engine than woodwork:-)

  2. Right then Fellow Scammell owners.......My gearbox is silent in operation in through all the gears until the top gear is selected...then the whining starts..and it's loud and as we accelerate through 23 mph its bloody unbearable then it gently subsides back down to a gentle scream... So, any thoughts? Is it something that can easily be repaired..Why is it just one gear? Am i likely to strip it all down find a load of horrors that can't be fixed easily and wish I'd left it? or spend weeks lovingly rebuilding it to find it still makes a row in top......Your thoughts please....:-D

mine would sream in top but when i changed the clutch it stop. i found the rivets had worn on the clutch:D

  3. Thanks for the pics Thor, nice to see it when it was a little tidier. I think the guy standing behind the Scammell is the previous owner (I recognise the rigger boots). The old thing is going to be put to work this weekend, after a long rest, I've got to winch some trees out of a big hole, i've got the winch drum freed off, but the brake lever shaft is solid. I hope i'll have enough room behind the vehicle to use the winch without a brake unless the plus gas

    works miracles.

Hi sambob thats not the owner stood behind.

  4. Went out with a fresh head on tonight and between me and her indoors we managed to prime the pump up:-D I have now shut the cock and will leave it for a few days and see if it primes up next time.....I have put feelers out for a diff and might know where there is one but i need to contact the relavent people.

i guess the crown wheel will have been scuffed and chewed badly so even if i went to all the trouble of rebuilding it it would never run in the correct mesh (assuming it could be set up correctly in the first place) I think i'm going to run the bas*$£d as is till things get bad by which time i should have the cash to sort it out....:-X

Which brings me to another question....Lets say the diff gets REALLY bad.....I could pull the half shafts out and remove the propshaft and run her on the front axle:idea: Any thoughts on running at speed through the transposing box and front axle? I know loads of people have done it to get home when they have "shed" the rear prop but what about for the longer term? As

to stay on the fun side of scammell ownership

You could turn the crown wheel around and run on the back face if you are that worried.

Running on the front axle for a long time the transfer box will get f#####g hot. And on big hills when the roads are wet you will loose grip(been there done that):cool2:

  5. While I'm on.... Has anyone got any tips regarding dropping a Rolls Eagle diesel in my Scammell (other than don't bother)??!!

It looks like the front crossmember will have to come out for some serious mods, due to the length of the rolls. I'm also not sure about whether I'll be able to use the Scammell clutch housing cover, as thats for a single plate push clutch and the Rolls has a twin plate pull stet up- I may have to cobble something up from a modern g/box bell housing and input shaft?!

The sump needs altering too, as the well is at the wrong end!!!

    Any thoughts?

Take it back into the cab it will fit.

  6. ive not tried the brakes out sinse cleaning up all the clevis"s and adjusting them all dont think they were that bad but the handbrake is ill try it out on a hill in the next few weeks hopefully .the air pack is still on maybe thats the problem how good is the original likely to be ?

you could put the spring brake inplace of the air ram and you should get better brakes aswell as the handbrake.

  7. really ? andy told me its a 325 anyway im pleased with it picked up a pair of scotches and the wires to suit along with a towing pole today ready to play

i was talking to the chap who andy got the engine of and he said it was a 290 not a 325.

    hows the brakes?

have you took that airpack of what andy put on for the handbrake.

  8. i would very much like to keep a british engine in my truck but i think it will be hard to find a gd one and there are not too many engines that will fit into a explorer with out a lot of chopping and cutting to get it in . i would like to keep my conversion so that i could easily put the meadows back into the truck if i ever wanted too or needed too .

i spend a lot of time running behind depuaty in the c.s elis explorer 290 rolls royce and i just cant belive how well it goes nouthing slows the thing down big horse power in an explorer is ok if u drive it properly and dont use all the power evan tho its there and u will be fine

you will use all the horse power:D

  9. i dont rearly know yet a big problem is gritineye is a rearly bad infulance on me and the noise of his cummins has warped my fragile little mind:nut:

i would like to do soumthing diffent tho i keep thinking about a 270hp CAT lump but i am not formiluar with these engines i.e size length ? i do like a bit of pussy power tho:shocked: and i dont know of another explorer with a cat engine
