I am thinking of a new MV, and very much like the look of a DAF YA126. Saw one in action at W&P the other year (with some crazy Dutch guys) and was very impressed.

What are people's opinions on these trucks? Are the practical (very subjective...relatively practical is probably a better phrase). Good and bad points. Spares availability?

Better to get one from Netherlands and import?

    Many Thanks

    Mick

Did you ever get a DAF?

I took the Daf on a run up north last weekend to Lough Neigh ,473 km door to door ,no problems the brakes are as bad as I remember ,just allow a bit more in front of you ,l think I got 13mpg but dont hold me to that

Are the bad brakes from design or maintenance?

Speaking for myself, I would always be curious to understand why it has failed.  I would strip it right down and apply air pressure to the oil side whilst immersing it in water to look for any bubbles. I find it very hard to understand why a heat exchanger should fail, assuming that it is made of copper and / cuprous alloys.  Does anyone know exactly causes them to fail?

My understanding is that they corrode. I am going to test to see if this is the problem. The Fox sat for ten plus years.

  4. I have not heard of many runaways. If its going to happen, probably not in your driveway. The K rail would not work for tracked. They are usually around 6K pounds for a 20 foot stick. You could pour a 4 to 6 foot wide wedge that would fit between tracks and lift hull and tracks off ground. Still have to shut down engine. The ramp would have to be long and high enough to lift majority of track to keep it from moving forward. I would not worry as long as you keep good service.

Ive tried my 1/2" impact and it didnt budge, i know there are better impacts out there, i'll have to get my hands on one. The big problem i have is that the line for the brake fluid goes directly over that bolt so i cannot get directly on it with a socket and i also cant take the line off till i get some space by taking the bolts out ironically, i gotta use a crows foot and ontop of that, the radiator is above it aswell so i gotta use a swivel adapter to get on it good so even further lost torque. I could use a torque multiplier but crows foot wrenches cant take near as much as sockets can, they flex real bad and pop off the bolt. I definitely wanna stay away from torches, maybe it just needs a longer bath in some liquid wrench. I'll hit again this weekend and see if i cant coerce it to break free

Good day Terra, perhaps Terry is your name?

The Saracen is a vehicle which some like or hate. Just like American Gama Goat.

Supportable yes, parts, some and mostly consumables are available.Where? Brakes for sure.

Is it already in the US of A or is it coming from another country? Yes in USA

IS this your first MV? Do you have dry good storage for it?

Are you planning on long trips or local outings? Local 50 to 100 miles per year, Mostly Display with runs around neighborhood.

Did you have a maintenance budget in mind? Not really.

Do you own a reasonable array of basic tools and kit ie jack stands socket sets floor jack? Yes on tools

The worst thing for any of these vehicles is lack of use. Any vehicle! With today's bad fuel it amplifies the problem!

Personally speaking the MV fuel tanks are way too big and that combined with lack of use and poor quality low end fuel give grief. Small discreete fuel tanks with good fuel pays dividends big style. Great idea!

Whar other vehicles have or do you own? Fox, Sultan, Universal carrier, M668 and others.

Touch base my Skip over at REME Depot in Texas as a resource and others in the US who support Brit vehicles.

Manuals are around and Vintage Vehicle Manuals has likely most of what you need.

There is an active FB group as well if you are that type. Looked last night after posting.

Shows s what you bought when you get it. SOme great folks on here with loads of advice. I am researching to see if I want to tackle!

Buying manuals as a first start is always a good practice and others will commend you as many of your answers lie inside. I will look at Green Machines and Marcus Glen.

Robin, you have a great list above and looks like you have lots of experience! Thank you for the talking points. Fantastic!

I have read horror stories on the steering in the FV603? Never seen a manual. I believe the brakes are bad on this unit. I know the difference between mineral oil and dot 5 for brakes!
