  1. Blimey that's excellent, do we agree the only way the bonnet could be uncut is if it came from the factory like that?

Each Explorer was built/assembled by a five man team (I remember reading somewhere) and all sheet metal work was hand made, although I should think there was a former/jig for the main shape, presumably the bonnet finisher would cut and dress holes to suit the engine/air filters fitted.

Seems to me that your Explorer is turning out to be unique..

Have sanded bonnet holes no sign of weld or filler bronze green paint on bonnet and were cut outs would be ???

will update photos all now nato green and ready to roll

  3. Dave Crouch had exactly same fault it is not the lift pump but hair line crack on diesel pipe from tank. you can"t just pull a pipe to the tank you have to have flow and return as original. to test pipework from pump to tank use air and you will find a small crack. Dave changed pump, lift pump etc etc but had no joy then realised problem was crack, if any probs call Dave and he will confirm details.

  6. An easy one, it is a Petter PU8 Universal engine. The oval plate on the cowl probably says P, or PU, but not the makers name, this was a wartime measure to hide identity, only initials used.

One of the uses this engine had was motive power of a pontoon bridge, where a flexible drive shaft off the engine coupling drove a propulsion unit, think there was one on each corner. They were still in army stocks in late 1970's.

Cheers richard yes it has P on plate, airfield finished in 45/6

  7. The matador you are looking for is now owned by my brother it was bought a couple of years ago from a timber contractor who had bought it from some new age travellers ,it was fitted with a new engine by jack henley some years ago but this had suffered from a cracked cylinder liner all parts have been found for its repair and it will be moved to the workshop soon to start the work, it is still in henley livery complete with recovery crane and will be restored the same hope this helps ben freer
