Does anyone know if / when there will be a reprint of this book? I'd love to get a copy in any condition, but they are currently starting at £200:??? on amazon, I have found one in the US for £90, but it is still a huge amount for a modern(ish) book.

I'll bet all those model makers have been after it and driving up the price :-)

  2. I love keeping up to date with this thread, jolly interesting.

    Idea:

My cousin runs a company who chemically clean ferrous parts in the West Midlands. Since I've had access to that I have never sand or shot blast anything again! I send down a stripped engine (all the parts) and it comes back on a pallet like the day it left the machine shop. They remove paint and hydrocarbons in a strong alkaline tank then corrosion in a heated acidic tank, doesn't affect machined surfaces to any great extent. He has steered the company towards dipping entire chassis and bodies, but it is just as useful on mechanical parts.

  3. My Dad fitted a sequential gas injection system on his 1999 4.0 Range Rover in 2006, with a Gen 2 Rangie you can get a 90L tank in the spare wheel well, you wouldn't know it has been converted. He loves it.

A Disco I or II is a different beast, you need sequential injection if you have a Disco II or III (Expensive). Then the biggest problem is the lack of space for the new tank. IMHO you don't want an LPG tank cluttering up the boot, I think they can be fitted in place of the fuel tank on IIs and IIIs but again expensive.

Get a TD5/6 and be done with it.

  4. John,

It is probably common knowledge, but what is the story behind your Valentine? I had a good look around it at W&P, talk about a rare vehicle, does the screen operate as intended or is it 'for show'.

Sadly I wasn't lucky enough to hear her running.

    Thanks

  5. What happened to all the 6 pdrs? With APDS they were damn good in WW2, how long did they stay in reserve after the war? Who did we sell them all to.... if they haven't scrapped them they may still be in reserve. Did we lend-lease any to Russia in WW2? If we did then they may well be still in reserve.

  6. Visited on Saturday. Lucky with the weather!

A great day, so much to see, I will give it a miss next year though and go the Tankfest AND Armour & Embarcation.

To the people with armour.... wouldn't it be more intresting to navigate through some fields and a wood rather than drive around a little circuit? I was surprised not to see more Universal Carriers.....

I thought the T34's had well looked after V12s, we were at the exit to the arena throughout the main displays and you could hardly hear the thing as it pulled up in the que, the T54 and T72 were another matter, they sounded like they were about to throw in the towel at any time:-D

  7. What would be the likelyhood of getting an example of every British wartime Sherman type in one place, part of one show.....

I'd like to see all the types present in the battles of Normandy i.e. no 76mm or HVSS versions:

    M4 - 75mm

    M4A1 - 75mm

    M4A2 - 75mm

    M4A4 - 75mm

    M4 or M4A4 Firefly.

If we tried to get Europes largest gathering of running wartime spec Shermans since the 1950s it could be quite news worthy.

  8. A worthy job!

    Question:

Are you keeping the M4 in it's post war guise or are you returning it to 'factory' condition? Bit of a tricky decision as I suppose the post war mods are just as 'historically significant' as it's original condition. If pressed I'd say WW2 condition will prevail :)

PS. anymore info on that european spares source?

PSS. If you haven't already get a DSLR and take a stupid amount of photos, you will regret it in the future if you don't:cry:

  9. There is a video on Youtube of a restored JagdPzIV driving in a field accompanied by some LH people, however there is no details of when and where.

    Also:

We should adjust the list to differentiate between StuG IIIs and StuG IVs, there is a StuG IV shown on page 9 of the 1st eddition of 'Pathfinder' undergoing restoration to running condition. See photo: http://www.sturmgeschutziv.pl/

  10. Is it me or did anyone else think the comparison between the Tiger I and Sherman M4A2 HVVS (76) was a little Silly?

A comparison between a Tiger I and a regular M4A2 would have had much more validity.... By the time the M4A2 or M4A3 HVVS (76) came along most of the Tiger Is on the Western Front were either knocked out or abandoned to the West of the Sein.

Besides a Sherman with wide tracks, long barrel and muzzle break looks more than a match for a Tiger I to the general public:-D

  11. Have a look at the following link to this 2003 site:

    http://www.alanhamby.com/factory1.shtml

Although this is the factory pages, the entire site is great with lots of aspects that are not regularly in print. The manufacturing photos are intresting as normally only 'in service' shots are circulated.

Wartime Tank manufacture could make a nice book, hmmm..... 'Building Blitzkrieg' has a nice ring to it.

  12. Right... I realise it has been around for years and is simple in principle, but how in practice do you stop the lower pistons on a Radial engine filling up with oil? Same question goes for the Multibank lower banks, where the cylinder is lower than the crank centre line.
