  1. Eddy,

I was offered that track and axle along with a Bren Carrier lower hull last week, I 'think' it's from Shaun on MLU - a real mine of Carrier information.

PS. Start a Restoration thread right now: we can follow it in real time. I'm in two minds at the moment as to T16 or UC, you steer a T16 with tillers (as you know), maybe the closest I'll get to heavier Second Word War Allied armour. Trouble is we didn't use them during the war so it would have to be restored to represent Canadian service in 44-45.... I'll have to work on the accent!

  2. Challanger 2 isn't going to be replaced anytime soon and all the Challanger 1s were exported, I forget to which country, but one friendly government got the lot. It's going to be a good few years, especially with the pending economy drive on the MOD.

  3. I'll agree too. I used to get Practical Classics, every now and again I am tempted, but it usually gets me angry sso it ends up in the bin. So much in there is complete fiction. If you want good quality technical magazines get hold of any US Chevy V8 or Hotrod mags, they put our monthly press to shame!

  4. A guy on the Turbine helpdesk with me today just asked what that old water bosh in the back ground of the photo was.... Looks like a Ram on its back to me, what on earth is a Ram? Nevermind.... lets get back to talking to the guys offshore EG.

Does Adrian think his M10 will make A&E? What with finishing it and then getting some shake down running done before driving on the roads....not the place to find a problem.

  5. So... when the rocker covers are on it wouldn't be obvious that the heads are modernised then? Lovely, I do like engines:nut: Surprised at the turn around, were they exchange or the originals (I appreciate not THE originals) reconditioned?

PS. Goes without saying - impressive.

  6. OK, it's 1950(?) something.... how did the tanks get selected for target duties? Was it centrally organised or local arrangement? Was it a case of, well we (War office) can sell those, but these are unsaleable so they can be targeted / put up for tender?

I've no idea at all how the 'system' operated.

  7. i believe the trouble with ww2 armour is the exponential increase in value that has happened in the last few years which i believe is both good and bad for the hobby, good because previous wrecks fit only for the scrapper now seem like prized gems and are now economically viable and bad because it's pricing out the true core of the hobby, the greasy enthusiasts. to be replaced by the men with money and that means it's run as a business which in turn might lead to people forgetting why ww2 kit is so valuable in the first place. it's because of the sacrifices made by the men of the last world war, it's in honour of their memory that many get into the hobby to begin with, i know i did.

it's not all bad though, men will come and go but that armour will last an awfully long time once it's restored.

I have to agree, there was a thread a while ago discussing it in detail. Having only re-engaged with the hobby in 2008 after a decade away I was shocked what had happened to armour prices. However although the prices have risen, the number of restored vehicles was a shock too, when I drifted away to classic cars there were only a couple of Grizzlies, Sextons and Stuarts at the shows... So good and bad news.

  8. Don't be so sure. Nigel is restoring three Churchills, all to a very high standard. They will be seen out and about I'm sure.

He served in tanks and is an enthusiast.

Spot on:D Ask him to join HMVF if he isn't already.

  9. You would think that owning a piece of WW2 History with the intention to restore it would be something to be proud of and chat about, it always surprises me how 'quite' the major collectors are about what they are doing... as if it is on the wrong side of the law. I was very surprised (and happy) that Adrian with the M10 was so forward thinking in allowing the restotation to be detailed. But back to the Churchill; it will pop up restored one day then go back to ground again as most other WW2 Armour does:-\

  10. I think there are three, the first every issue has a Sherman on the front cover and an article coverning range targets.... I left them on my desk at work so I can't check right now!

  11. Eddy, you kept that quite. Plenty of work ahead, but hey isn't the restoration the most rewarding part? Make sure you utilize the Restoration section, lots of photos. What's the betting that when you are up to your neck in rust and crud you may put the Range recovery option on the back burner:cool2: OR it will make you all the more keen!

  12. Probably more than you think there were quite a number of specialist Shermans that made it into the Post War number change (**ZR**) etc including BARVs which lasted to the late fifties and Sherman DDs. Added to if you include Grizzlies as Shermans the ones coming from Portugal in 1983 must have constituted a light regiment (20 odd tanks).

Hmmm, I'll have to tighten the criterion then....

  13. I use abbey, or santander as it is now.

A totally free business account, if you keep within the limits (number of cheques cashed etc) Not a high street account though. everything done online or through post/cash m/c.

No phishing please :D I've no money in it anyway :D

    Thanks, I'll investigate.

  14. Guys,

I'm currently looking into the various high street business bank accounts available, I'm excluding Barclays as I use them on a personal basis, the business must be seperate. Jim... Jack... et al who run your own businesses, any to steer clear from? PM is fine if your worried about it. My business will only be dealing with other businesses so there are no direct sales or 1000's of transactions to worry about. Nothing to do with our hobby - just Gas Turbines.

  15. Thinking outside the box... I hate that turn of phrase.. anyway, what is the situation on international ranges? Presumably Canada, Australia, India, etc must have ranges that at sometime have had Allied wartime AFVs as hard targets. I mentioned the former USSR previously and I believe it is very difficult to transfer armour to private hands in the USA at the current time. Have all the Western European ranges been cleared of WW2 armour by now?

  16. Both good points Jack, Perhaps one of the forum members can answer the zimmarate question .

There is a drop dead date for Zimmerite, I think early 44. Obviously you don't know where a vehicle is going once it leaves the production line thus all Tanks had the vertical (or near vertical) surfaces covered in Zimmerite before final production paint of Dark Yellow was applied.

  17. The Tiger is an incredibly important link in the development of the Tank. As has been previously stated, The first GREAT tank that we developed, the Centurion was built to counter this tank. It was feared greatly by it's adversaries and was technically advanced. It was certainly not obese...

    Steve,

Breath deeply and move to another thread...:-D
