  1. I had the very same thoughts as you (just get in and drive it home) when I bought a Foden recovery from Withams and to get it back home to Northumberland, however after thinking who wants to be stuck on the road side in an un-familiar area and try to organise getting it recovered from the road side at a reasonable price by recovery firm I decided to have it transported up costing around £400 and peace of mind. When it was delivered I took it out for a run on my own early on a Sunday morning, about 18 Miles later the temp gauge was in the red and it had snapped all three aux belts that drive the water pump, trust me it was not a good feeling to have 24ton of truck on road side on my own and the thought how do I get it back home without cooking it???????? and that was on my door step so to speak!!!!!! Good luck with whatever you decide to do, I just thought I let you know how things can get sticky when least expected. Maybe gather contact no's of recovery company's that are along your planned route just for if things get sticky. Good luck and enjoy.

  2. If you were to sit in the winchmans seat at back of cab behind drivers seat, the levers i think you are talking about are the one next to the window & on your right hand side is the hand throttle control, and the one on your left is for engaging the winch gear box to the transfer box, think you need your transfer box lever (high/low) to be in neutral position before you can engage winch lever into position, hope this helps!!!

  3. Been up to workshop tonight, 1st photo, unidentified item sitting on spade of Milly It does line up with mounting lugs/holes, so maybe it is for the Milly????. 2nd photo remembered I got some other stuff on the same pallet of the unidentified item. 3rd &4th photo close ups of some items that may go with original unidentified item. 5th photo it sits inside of lugs on the front of the Foden EKA recovery so its not for that. Whats your thoughts????????????

  4. Cosrec is correct and I should have stated this at the begining, the groove/guide in the pully's is not as large/deep as that of the standard fairlead for the Militant winch, so I would say its to take smaller rope than that fitted to the Militant winch, I have never tried to hitch it up to any of the eye mountings on the back of Milly but they do look to be roughly the same distance apart of that of the 'A FRAME' that goes onto those eye mountings, I'l try it and take a photo so you can all see and give commment, its the fact that the pully's are offset from centre of the frame?????

Await the Photo, P.S. If you go to Transport & Wreakers you can see a pic of my Milly Mk3 and a little description of history.

  5. Thought bout time I put a pic of my Millitant Mk3, army reg 87 ET 21, owned it now for about 9 years or so, according to the vehicle record card it was issued to S.E.M.E at Boron from 1971 until 1987 then stuck off for auction in 1988. So maybe some of the ex R.E.M.E lads may have trained on it, also its had a mod where all the winch controlls had been copied to a frame above the hydraulic tank on the back body so as the winch could be operated outside of the cab, anyone on here remember doing this mod to this truck. the Militant now lives in Northumberland.
