  1. Ah yes, the capstan. I have one on my 86". Make up a phrase involving the words skin, rice pudding, pull and won't to get an idea of how good they are. If you do get one read up about them and where the shear pins are, both of them. These winches can bite you very hard.

  2. As has been noted, the Lightweight wasn't particulary light but was lighter than the normal S2/S3 SWBs, especially with all the removeable bits taken off: doors, rear top cappings etc. More importantly it was narrower as it was designed to fit into the Beverly, hence the slab sided body and unique to type axle ends.

As for a winch, you might like to consider a hydraulic one, some years ago these were popular when driven off a power steering pump which you would have to fit of course.

You need to consider when you will use your winch, hydraulic and PTO need a running engine, electric needs a BIG battery. Also worth think about where you will use it, a front winch pulls you further into trouble, a rear one pulls you out.

  3. Andy,

I can't help with your specifc query except to say, as I'm sure you already know, 2m was the default for mobile work.

I am though very interested in the radio, I must have seen the same ad as I was sorely tempted, but have too many big green radios already, and that aerial base looked difficult to mount on a Ferret. I'd be interested to hear how you get on with it, by pm maybe?

  4. I've been offered the radio kit from a 110 FFR. I have no need of the Dexion and other mounting frames, is this of value or is there loads of it around, making it so much scrap? The radios themselves are a different matter but there will be a 351 and a 321 surplus to my requirements.

  5. I was an apprentice at ROF(N) in the early 70s and can remember the Light Guns being around along with the then new 101 Landrovers to tow them. Being also a wannabe TA gunner (O. Cdt.) I can recall being surprised at having to take a wheel off to bring the gun into action, much easier with our 25 Pdrs.

Was there also something about not scratching the trail tubes? Seemed unlikely for a field weapon. Maybe they just didn't want us oiks damaging the paint.

I also remember Eager Beavers being load tested: big concrete blocks on the forks and a chap with a stopwatch saying "GO" to the driver. And the odd directions they went in if the steering valves were wrong.

  6. Hi, if you should buy it I'd be interested in a couple of lengths, if the price is right, to go on the front of the Ferret. I know PSP isn't the correct thing but there are plenty of photos of Ferrets with PSP clamped on the front of them. I'm also in Kent so easy to collect.
