I thought the ATU for HF was mounted within the vehicle and only the antenna was outside,with the boxes being for the VHF ATU's only?

I'm hoping someone can help me,I'm trying to find out details of GPMG vehicle mounts used by the British Army in the early 1960's,up to and including 1967 but no later.

I will post some links to photos I found on the web which show the mounts in question,I feel at least one type is something made by the unit but I would be most gratful for any info.

That's good news!. Strange as it may sound it might be better left outside if that's where it's been for 60+years as if it starts to dry out corrosion will likely set in. I will email you some info on this provided by the conservator working on the P-38 project with us.

It would be illegal to sell it unless it was removed from the site under MOD licence.

Jack have you spoken to your local county archaeologist about this relic? they should be made aware of it so it can be added to their records.

And a Series One Land Rover. Yards like this are becoming rare with the high price of scrap,it would be nice if only the WC-56 and Series One could be saved.

There is a yard near me with a lot of pre 60's gear,including a Rolls Royce V12 engine(no it's not a Merlin,I have checked......

Mark,thanks for posting the pictures. I knew about this crash as there was another crash of an Eighth "heavy" which was ferrying men back to the US after WW2 not far from my home.

On June 8th 1945 B-17G 44-8639 of the 509th Bomb Squadron,351st Bomb Group from Polebrook Northants crashed in the Cader Idris range near Dolgellau killing all twenty on board,some of whom had been in England since early 1943 and had completed their tours. I have been researching the crash since I was 15 and I'm in contact with the families of several of the men.

The B-24 crash is mentioned in the USAAF loss records alongside the B-17.

I have. A lot depends on who within EH is involved. I must say here in Wales CADW are far better on preserving military history than EH.

I suspect we'll see something like an English Heritage take over,might not be as bad as it sounds. Even better would be if IWM take her on but I can see funding issues there.

A very interesting story. What a shame the turret was removed and is now in the hands of a collector who,it would seem from the article,won't let anyone see it. Good sense on the part of the landowner who wants the tank to stay in-situ,it has a far better chance of surviving where it is and tells a great story,one that likely would not have been told had the whole thing been removed.

I will email the person who told me about it several years ago,he also mentioned that it was used by the 101st A/B as a training aid.

If it's history and use can be proven it may be worth having a chat with your local county archaeologist with a view to getting it recorded and perhaps protected in-situ.

I have spoken with Martin Brown the MOD archaeologist involved in this discovery concerning the P-38 Lightning I'm working on. It's good to know the MOD not only have their own archaeologists but that they are genuinly interested in their subject.

Last time I saw it there was no name,it was still in it's Norwegian OD and was missing the wrecker body. I spoke to the previous owner several years ago,He bought the truck direct release from Norway and removed and sold the original engine and wrecker body,he told me he wanted to turn it into a tractor unit as He drove these during the war.

I have been told about this before. I agree Neil it should stay exactly where it is,too many of these relics get hauled off "for preservation" only to vanish or turn up on evilbay:-(

It depends on when(early or late WW2),where,and who. The plates with the beveled edge were used during WW2 on US and British vehicles. Your best bet is to study as many original photos as possible.

I know someone who viewed it but decided not to buy due to the engine change and other mods. I seem to remember being told it had been seen at a show last year but I'm afraid I can't remember where.
