  1. Not yet; as the new owner of 00 DD 40 is in a learning curve. He has been told to jack up a front wheel and rock it for and aft. Possibly remove the wheel and inspect the brakes.  Odd because it loaded forward so nicely and then fronts locked upon unload.  I may have to provide some personal motivation... do it for him.  Newc .

  2. Hi all;  after 3 yrs dry secure storage, the front tires will only roll forward.  No problem with rears, but front tires seem locked up in reverse.  Gear selector in N and all brakes off.  Is it possible that one set of front shoes are stuck/  Both fronts at the same time? Ferret drove just fine before storage and drove into storage.  Hand brake was on during storage tho... thanks  newc

  3. Fox overheated straight away.  Rads had been serviced and all, seems correct... except the incorrect engine modifications caused excessive heat transfer to eng block.  The sleeves are important in the first series eng, and the high compression car pistons just made it all worse.  I have a later series eng core to rebuild and install... someday?   Newc

  4. Not a CVRT, but rather a CVRW [Fox], The J60 type 1 cams drive a Fan gear box. I have the later J60 in the shop [from a CVRT] and no Cam gearbox on it. Understand heads are not interchangeable due to different cooling passages so looking to install 24 volt electric fans. anyone out there done this ...ideas?  Newc in Oregon USA

  5. Wow; Seems Cheap considering there are only about 50 of these out there. I would want at least $45,000 USD for mine. Takes a crew to drive one. Oddly another one in Oregon, USA was advertised for $72,000 USD in MVPA magazine.   Newc in Oregon

  6. Robin C has a good engine removal post on Mapleleaf site. Special fixture is necessary. New3c

I can't see where the oil is coming from. Might be an oil tank connection so I plan to take that out and see if it's the culprit. However, knowing my luck it will be the sump, etc, in which case the engine will have to come out.

Assuming that's the case, what's the best way to remove it? EMER's say take out engine and gearbox together but others have suggested unbolting the engine from the gearbox and just taking the engine out. If this is the case, I presume the gearbox should be disconnected leaving the fly wheel attached to the engine?

There is a lifting bracket at the rear but can't see one at the front - perhaps the slots at the sides of the flywheel housing (picture above)?

    Any guidance will be appreciated!

  7. I’d value people’s views but it seems that the bubble regarding vehicle prices is about to or has burst having just seen yet another auction result (on here) for a Jeep set at £11-13k guide price (usually on the low side) but sold for £10k. As a long term collector I like many others have seen prices soar to a point of being only now open to a rich few, jeeps at this value are manageable and not likely to drop much due to the size/fun/practically of them but prices have clearly settled from last year, its mainly slightly rarer vehicles, bigger and more impractical vehicles which have traditionally been advertised a few thousand more than the last one every time one goes on the market until they are £20-30-40 or 50k plus that appear to be stagnating.

I’ve been tracking a number of vehicles in the last year or so now here, in a number of other places including eBay (once you take out the scam ads !!!) and auctions and currently I have seen an increasing number of higher priced vehicles doing the rounds but not selling with some bids which to me seem reasonable and even higher than previous others have sold for but still £10k or more short of reserve.

My view is I’m a buyer of vehicles as a collector who has space to house them and a little cash but not at some of the price levels people are asking. Of course last year saw the mega rich with bottomless pockets buy Jeeps at £70-80k on occasions but these were exceptions to the norm and in the same auction a Sherman failed to get reserve.

Currently there are 3 vehicles on the market I would buy for my own use at this moment in time which it wouldn’t be fair to name on here but I would buy and pay cash for today but I’m not so desperate I would pay the asking price so I don’t even make the phone call and there must be many people like me out there who like me would push the boat out a bit but not go crazy.

I think the number of buyers who have large amounts of cash and want a particular vehicle is diminishing, low interest rates have been around for a long time now so the people who bought a vehicle because their money isn’t earning interest and it’s an investment have spent up, vehicle owners are generally getting older so the numbers of vehicles coming onto the market is increasing and will increase greatly in the next 10 years when the family sell them off as they go to a better place (if I’ve just put you into that category, sorry !!) and we are in uncertain times so there is less money for luxuries.

The market in classic cars, tractors and lorries has already reduced and suffered the same as the ‘investors’ leave the market due to diminishing returns.

What’s your view ? Or am I wrong and do people see the first BSA M20 hitting £10k and a Bren Gun Carrier hitting £50k and actually selling for that in the not too distant future ?

HI; The same is happening Stateside, younger and new fans of the Hobbies are squeezed by the general economies, especially housing. Regular driver cars $20-30 K usd ect. Newc in Oregon

Hi; those are also found in the CMPs, Wish they were in Canada or US for shipping. Maybe a dealer will take them on? Newc in Oregon US

  9. We're in the process of fitting a new harness to our Number 9 Chev gun tractor at the museum; I'm not sure where we got it from, but it appears to be a really well made harness. Would you like me to enquire about it?

    Cheers,

    Terry

Thanks; Vintage wiring of Maine is very expensive and not model specific, so any lead would be great. Newc

  10. Hi all; I'll try to help here. The Military Vehicle Collectors Club of Oregon, held its meeting Monday night and witnesses explained that the breech ring was cracked apart and the breech/breech block and shell door were GONE... fragmented. The projectile exited the barrel correctly. So now there is an extensive investigation by authorities that is expected to take months The men's families have good support. That is all I can add to this post. Newc in Oregon
