  1. Hello,

     

    I'm planning to visit the imperial war museum to search for pictures of the early bedford MW's. I have been told there are lots of pictures there, but it's not as easy as asking to see all the pictures of a particular vehicle. I do plan to spend a couple of days at the museum and was hoping for any advise on how to best to search for things? Would it be by date? or location? etc

     

    If anyone has done this before and can offer me any advise i'd be really gratefull.

    on page 165 there are some trucks like the one above, and on page 161 there is an o type with the twins as you say, but the wheels look different, more cooling holes. I think the wheels changed when the o type was introduced. There are more pictures of o types with twins on other pages.

     

    Also as i said before the breather on the drivers side of the engine is the civilian type, if it was an o type the breather would point up.

    Pete i think like richard says the wheels give it away, the early ox/oy did have twins but the wheels are different.

     

    As richard/wally say i think it is a w type similar to this i think, as wally says there are a number of pictures and Bart Vanderveen states cilvilian trucks were used.

  4. I agree with the above only i think it was a impressed cilivian spec truck, rather than a mw ox oy, model. The breather pipe on the drivers side of the engine is pointing down the military ones point up. Will have a look through my pictures later see if i can find anything looking the same.

  5. Hello,

     

    The fire extingusher should be held on by five screws two at either end and one in the middle. The same pattern of holes should be in one of the small sides of the battery box, the battery box is also the base of the passenger seat in the OX/OY's and they have the fire extingusher in this place, and the boxes seem to have the holes regerdless of weather they are in a MW or OX/OY. You could use those hole instead of drilling new ones? I'm thinking maybe if you put on top of the box you'll catch your elbow when changing gear.

     

    The reason i asked about the holes behind the seat is, the MWC' were produced upto 1943 with aeroscreens, and i thinking maybe your could have started life with aeroscreens.

    As far as the Fire Extinguisher is concerned, is it mounted in the centre of the battery box lid or offset to the drivers side? A photo i have suggests the later? My original box top has no holes or they have been filled and painted over many times? Also, is the bracket fixed on with screws or bolts and nuts?

  7. Good morning richard,

     

    Yes i know the QL has a dipstick, we have one in my dads.

     

    I'm answering gas regarding using the mystery clip to hold the dip stick when running on the drivers side tank on a MW. if that is what the mystery clip is for then why would the QL have the same clip when a QL only has one tank, SO the mystery clips isn't for holding the dip stick.

  8. Good morning Richard,

     

    Thats right, but the jack handle just fitted, with a rag between the seam of the cab and the handle to stop it rattling. The petrol dipstick clips are lower down. The jack handle my dad had wasn't the correct one for the truck it just fitted nicely.

    Like i said it is virtually the same as the petrol dip stick clips, but there are two clips for the dipstick, same as the MW,OX,OY, still needs wrapping in a rag to stop it rattling. So the dip stick will fit in either.

    Here in guys thread post 224 http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?27783-bedford-QL-restoration/page23 The mystery bracket on the back of the cab, and the petrol dipstick clips (2off) to the right of the gearstick, and some danish guy has some genuine bedford handles on his tool box...... The petrol dipstick clips are welded, where as the mystery clip is bolted.

     

    So richard whats the clip for?

  9. Hello Richard,

    The brackets look exactly like the petrol dipstick holder. I'm pretty sure the QL should have one on the back of the cab and the dip stick is down near the gear levers? It was a QL owner who told me it was for a machete, Bill Shucker and his QLB. I think my dad had his jack handle in his

    If yours is missing i guess some danish guy has some nice handles on his tool box, as they had no ides what they were for too.

  10. The leather strap on the tool box is to hold the lid open, on the top horizontal face of the rub strip, above the strap, there should be a brass nipple, the same as on the rear body on a MW. The leather strap should have a key hole shaped cut out in it for the nipple to go through. Makes good sense when you try and load the locker. If you look closely on the picture below you can just make out the nipple on the rub strip.

    I've a capillary tube type temprature guage to fit to my bedford. Having never fitted one before, and the cost of getting it repaired again, i'm a little bit cautious.

     

     

    Can anyone offer me adivice about fitting the tubes, and how best to avoid kinking it.

  12. I think it'd just be a case of getting the right drill. A carbide tipped masonary drill may go through, but a coated HSS drill would be better, a colbalt or a miracle coated drill.

     

    If you need anything drilling i'll have a go at it. Be intersting to see how tough it is.

  13. Hello,

     

    I can give you a few pointers. The QLs had steel bodies the wooden bodies had been phased out by 1941 when the QL's were introduced. On the early models the radiator grill was on the inside of the radiator cowl, they had the round badge, and an extra strip of metal running vertically down the centre of the grill. The windscreen had internal hinges and the later ones were external. The early ones had a vent in the front of the cab. Also the front cab mounting were different. The very early ones had big headlights and side lights.
