  1. Hi Iain, Managed to get 4 shackles today to do the job here! Spent nearly 4hrs on the 'Net searching for the right shackle pin, diam, corresponding 'Jaw' size but no luck and was then recommended a company not to far from me and sorted me with certified shackles that fit the job perfectly!
Individually they are rated at  15cwt/.76T and together will lift 3T ! They each fail at 3T...
Thanks for your help Iain !
    Regards

    Gaz

    Yes that's the ones Gaz.

I find them easier to use anyway and you would need a spreader bar for the side lift points. You can get away without one easier using the end shackles.

It so happens I lifted and moved one yesterday and although it was still loaded with around half a ton of stuff(maybe more) it was no problem.

    Disclaimer,(just in case)

All relevant health and safety stuff was taken into account and the risk assessment and lift plan approved. Tested and rated lift gear( as much as I could), trained and competent operator. Carried out in a controlled and contained environmental using eco friendly fuel and an inclusive and diverse  Eco crew.

Hi Iain, If I may ask another Q? I had ordered what I thought were the 4 correct shackles from XMod a couple of days ago,as they didn't state the pin diam in the advert, I asked them Not to send them if the pin diam was over 3/4" 19mm...  https://www.thexmod.com/item_detail.asp?id=2867&t=Shackle_2_3/4_IN_Inside_FV2084745

Got a refund from them this morning! Do you happen to have the part no. for the one's you use?

    No problem Gaz

Sadly it's not a workshop but a repurposed comms shack and was just an open space with a bench down one side. I have fitted shelves and use it as a store.

The corner brackets I had initially thought were for antenna but they all seem to have them and they are strong, I think they are for legs for free standing the container. Maybe someone who has used them or is knowledgable will let us know.

    Iain

Oh that's a point Iain! Don't the Zeppelin cabins have that facility so the truck can drive from under the cabin etc?
    Or maybe the Yank ones.....
    Gaz

  4. Iain, you are a Godsend Mate!
And that is a proper Engineering Workshop isn't it? Lathes & pillar drills etc....
The top corner brackets...I thought they were for Antennas or something like, it looks like that is what they are really for?
But thinking about it, if there is one on each corner, they would act as a spreader bar wouldn't they?
And BIG Thank You for the photos, I can work out the exact length of each of the 'Brothers' when I arrange the Lift!
    Bouncing here..

  5. If so, had a look at the other not yet covered over with insulation...
Not realising they are actually mounted to the floor/base as well, I'm quite happy to use them to lift the cabin off!.

Just need to source some 1 1/2 Ton shackles now, I think I already have some! And will save me the expense of having 4 side brackets made up too!
    Thanks again!

  6. That's handy to know Iain Thanks!
I could not find any info on the web about the plates after searching the NSN!
Do you still have the plates Iain?  The pins are 13mm, the threaded holes seem to be M12 but, with the age of the cabin (Pre Metrification,) I'm wondering whether they are actually 1/2" something or other?
It may be quicker to tap them out to Metric?
I will keep you posted with my progress 👍
    Cheers

  7. Iain, you are an info God Sir!
Had a look on xmod and no luck there...And I think maybe too expense for a single off & on lift!
At least I have all the info now on how it's done!
Got a local Engineering firm who no doubt can come up with something simpler. see pic.
I did not know that the holes were threaded and there is reinforcement underneath!
Thanks again, you have saved me a fair bit of head scratching there Mate!

    Cheers

  9. M8,5/16 UNF,5/16 BSF you should be able to make a educated guess by comparison. You probably just have a strained thread , if it were me - then I would just roll the thread better using a HT bolt , S grade or 8.8 may do it , a cap head screw would be better , gear oil on the threads , enter and screw it in tight. If it fails - then re-tap.

Hi Ruxy! I tried quite a few threads with the bolts expecting the same...I even tried some from the back but no luck there! As you can see from above photo, the tap went through ally and steel really easy!

    Cheers

  10. Hi Guys, I met with John today and he had kindly brought some bolts with him for me to try on a piece of framework but the answer was no....When I got home, the postman had been and delivered a couple of bolts I had ordered....

    Still no luck!

So far, I have tried M8,5/16 UNF,5/16 BSF and lastly M8 Fine (1.0 pitch)...BA only goes to 6mm in diameter so it looks like I will have to try the first suggestion and that was to tap them out to M8...will have a go now and let you know! (Would be a lot simpler I suppose!)

However, I did find some thing that does fit! There are lots of smaller rivnuts installed and i found a bolt that fits perfectly but, here we go again, its NOT Metric Ha ha!

  11.

I would have thought it very unlikely that BSF would have been used on anything built or modified after 1982 but we had not then properly settled into metric course as the British standard so anything is possible.

    David

Hi David and thanks for the info!

I have just ordered 2 of 5/16 BSF and 8mm Metric Fine (1.0) bolts....For a couple of quid, I will be a bit wiser!

    Will keep you posted!

    Thanks

    Gaz

  12. Hi Gaz,

It could well be M8, as you originally thought, but a different thread pitch. This is the annoying thing with Metric, at least you know where you are with BSF/BSW or UNF/UNC. You will see the pitch marked on your thread tap. A thread gauge should tell you.

Hi Richard, I am thinking it is possible you are right...it may be a metric fine...I know these were tapped after the 'box' was built as there is swarf behind the formica/hardboard cladding!

I don't have any bolts Richard, only the threaded holes, I don't think a thread gauge would fit in the hole!

This is turning into a crusade now Ha Ha!

    Have you tried 5/16 BSF?

Hi John and thanks for the quick reply!

    5/16 BSF...That's going back a bit isn't it?

I am doing the same as you with the conversion to a motorhome/camper...

there must be a couple of hundred at least, all I want to do is identify what thread they are so I can use the existing holes where my cupboards etc need to be secured!

Today,I have eliminated 5/16 UNF as a contender so will order a handful of cheap bolts off Ebay and try them!

And thank you for your kind offer! It's easy to get obsessed with things like this isn't it?

    Cheers

  14. I've persevered & can't find anything would correspond.

I have also gone through COSA Section W5 that has a lot of vehicular workshop, frames, tables, fittings etc but nothing there.

Hi fv1609, Thank you very much for your time and quick reply!

I have 2 data plates on the body...there is one mentioning the NSN number but it's blank on the plate!

I have found this info (on here): C 039/23 Shop Equipment, Electronic Repair, Truck Mounted, CB365/5. Misc.Instr.No.1.Apr.1982

and it seems my 'box' is thirty four years old! The other data plate says FV727343 on it!

Having mostly stripped the formica covered hardboard, it looks to me this was a later mod from all the swarf that I have found behind it!

Here are the pics of the data plates.

    Cheers

    Gaz
