  1. Hi all, I ve just purchased a Series One Land Rover, registered 95BP23. It was sold in the 71st Ruddington sale on 10/12/63, Lot No 305.

Has anyone got the catalogue? if so, is there any chance of a copy of the page it s on, for my records? Thanks in advance.

  2. I have a BSA M20, which I want to finish as a Post War example. It finished it's service with 124 Recovery Company REME at Newton Aycliffe in 1967. Does anyone out there know what Divisional Flashes it would have, if any. I don't know what Formation they were in in 67 or the number that would be on the REME flash.

  3. Further to my turning out the photo cupboard, here is a selection of RE Plant in various situations.

Allis Chalmers TL645 Bucket Loader. Designated as a Medium Wheeled Tractor. Dating from the 1960's and very much old hat when this shot was taken in the mid 80's

Better view of the dumptruck. Again 1960's vintage. The civilian versions had various titles depending on who was who at the newly formed British Leyland. Scammell LD55, AEC 690, etc, but the Military one always sported the Rampant "Invicta" Horse badge of Aveling Barford Ltd, on the front. We just called them Barfords.

Volvo 4400 Bucket loader a far more modern Medium Wheeled Tractor than the old Allis, and Haulamatic Dumptruck which replaced the Barford. The Haulamatic had an Allison automatic transmission which many felt wouldn't stand up to the abuse meted out by the average Sapper driver. However, they proved to be more than up to the job, and were a vast improvement on the manual "fight to the death" crash box of the Barford

Everything drinks diesel, and the easiest way to fill up on site is to syphon in. Volvo 4400 and D6D

I passed my HGV 2 test on a Barford dump truck at 22 Engr Regt in 1978. Cracking thing to drive. If you can drive one of them, everything else is easy. I don't remember anyone having a good thing to say about the Haulomatic when we got them.

  4. Looks to be a unit mod as you can still see the wheel marks on the canvas and the frame looks too new!

It would not be a unit MOD. That is a big no no in this day and age. The unit would get a Red on it's annual Equipment Care Inspection if ay vehicle was found with an illegal MOD. The good old days, when you modded your vehicle to make it more user friendly are long gone

I have seen one 90 Wolf in service with this spare wheel layout though, so I'm guessing it's an official MOD.

  5. I have good memories of Mike and Carrie in the 70s, during my early days in the hobby. He was always happy to give advice. Unfortunately, my career in REME, prevented me from attending as many shows as I would have liked and I lost contact.

  6. Eryk,

I think you need an AB (Army Book 562) a brown (buff) coloured book in A5 size. Inside are pages which tell you details such as chassis number and other details, services and inspections carried out, modifications. I seem to remember all vehicles of yours age had this. Though in later life they may have had a FMT 1004 document. This was in A4 size, but had the same information in it.

  7. I've just bought a BSA M20 and need some help with the TAC signs on the tank sides. On the right side is a red anchor within a red circle and blue background. This is a Beach Group TAC sign. (correct me if I'm wrong please) On the other side is a blue square with white strip at the top and the number 381 on it in white. The colour is Royal Engineers I think. Can anyone tell me what the 381 denotes. I've tried everywhere on the net.
