  1. Quite right........... the Ford was fitted with the Commer cab, sorry, its an age thing you know....... now, what was I doing before I started on this???????????

    I might have to google it. Though I do rather like the lok of the Commer Cab.

  3. I was wondering if the springs etc... where secured with 'pip-pins'.

     

    Didn't think about the quick release couplings on the cooling system though, I just asumed that due to the short distances involved they hadn't bothered.

     

    I take it the prop-shaft connection is merely a splined affair?

  4. Haven't read all the replies but this was being discussed in work the other day. The general concensus was that the decision showed a distinct lack of imagination. They could have, for example, replaced him with a great dane and called him 'Bigger'.

    Or paid homage to the airframe mechanics and called him 'Rigger'.

    Or used a Hyena and called him 'Snigger'

    There were a few others that I have now forgotten but you get the general idea.

  5. There's another free download program that I use called PIXresizer.

     

    It will do individual pictures or a complete folder at a time and is very quick. It renames the pics too by adding there new dimensions to the file name and also gives an preview impression of the new size. The size can be reduced in pertantages, dimensions or pixels.

  6. I'd be happy with just a 1950's Commer Q4. :-)

     

    A few years ago there were two turned up on ebay at the same time. Both minters, one having spent all its life in storage. The most expensive one went for £2,500.

     

    I'd spend the rest on a small plot of land to park it on and a basic shed structure to keep the rain out, oh and fuel. :D

    I'll google your club too oily, would be nice to get a chance to play with big oily stuff and thanks to my trade I'm pretty comfortable around hydraulic systems etc...

    Only possible problem I can see is distances. I have a young family and the boss won't take kindly to me disappearing for a whole day on anything like a regular basis for long distances just to play with someone elses toys when I've got stuff to be getting on with at home. I shall endevour to have a look though and thank you for taking the time to respond to this thread.

  8. Wow, that Canberra is in a very sorry state! It's an ex- A&AEE Boscombe Down Aircraft (where I work, only it's sadly long since lost the moniker of A&AEE) and I think it might have been laterly used for icing trials. I might be completely wrong of course!

  9. Very impressive, that's ne mean feat by any stretch of the imagination! Thankyou for looking after a much neglected part of our nations heritage. I'm an aircraft mechanic by trade and have worked on numerous interesting old airframes. In fact, my favourite, D.H. Comet XS235, is now up at Bruntingthorpe in taxiable condition despite being sat outside for 14 years this year.

  10. Hello Folks, I am trying to research some of the camo schemes used on german armour during the 2nd world war.

     

    I have try'd googling with some results but would I was wondering if anyone on here knew of any good on-line sources? I'm going to have a trawl of some of the military modeling websites aswell to see what they can throw up.

  11. I wish I had the patience to even learn and develop the skills involved in such a build. I was with the judges when we saw it and they were enthusing about it. Top job!

     

    Now, have you ever considered making a schwimer version of a Type 2 Campervan? :D

    My old bus used to do a good impression of a gold fish bowl collecting and keeping water on the inside as opposed to the outside. :-D

  12. I saw this in the metal at War & Peace. It's very impressive. Espeacially as my cousin whom I met up with at the event now has a genuine Schwimvagen that I'd been pouring over just previously. He too said what a good copy it was. :-)

  13. Good to hear you're making progress however slow it may seem. I too am afflicted with too many distractions but my deisre for an old truck is now strengthing my resolve to get the other projects all finished. I just need to find somewhere to keep it!

     

    As for originality, how rare are these? Plenty will have been modified after being de-mobbed. I've seen a few hippie/traveller variants such as the 'Henge-Hog' and I'm pretty sure they weren't factory approved conversions :D. As they seem to be a rock bottom value wise (goodness knows why but I'm not complaining as it means they are within some sort of grasp for plebs like me) it's not as if you're going to drasticaly devalue it.

    Fantastic Resto account so far :-) Keep it up.

     

    I'll see what I can do. Not allowed to take photo's as it's on a secure airbase. I found a web page thingy in work for it and have sent an email to the museum to see if I can go and have a gander so I'll see what happens.

     

    We also have an immaculate and totaly original Scammel Pioneer still in service, though it's kept hidden away as the bean counters keep trying to pension it off.

  15. Erm, sort of, O ten to spend more time wiping the floor under my cars to mop up the various leaks!

     

    I would love to lay claim to concours restorations but I have precious little experience with welding and fabrication (something that I am hoping to ammend). My forte is in taking things apart and then cooking up various outlandish (and stupid) ideas of how to put them back together again.

     

    After having too many projects on the go for too long now though I am having a 'get them finished and shifted' drive to get them back on the road and in a saleable state asap. Then fill the void with something along the lines of a Commer Q4 that doesn't need much work as a play thing. I'll also keep hold of the 'Bratwurst' to have a go at some track days.

     

    that's the plan anyway.
